Description Installing Clisp Studio and
Setting up a Database
This support document describes how to Install Clisp Studio and Set up a Database.

1 Installation
In order to load Clisp Studio onto your computer, you need to register on the VJ Tech website, send an e-mail to
service@vjtech.co.uk and be given access to the download area for Clisp Studio. In exceptional circumstances
(i.e. no internet access), a CD can be sent, but this is not the recommended procedure.

Once you have access to the download area, click on the hyperlink and ‘Save’ the ‘zip’ file to either the default
‘Download’ area or a User specified location on the PC (note this may take some time due to the size of the ‘zip’
file).

Once downloaded, the ‘zip’ file needs to be ‘unzipped’. Figure 1 shows the files that have been unzipped (along
with the original ‘zip’ file).

Figure 1 - Installation Files Downloaded and Unzipped

Once the software has been loaded, there is a file ‘setup’ which must double clicked to start the process. Do
not try to start the installation by double clicking on the file ‘Clisp Studio’ file.

Clisp Studio uses a number of software packages which require installation in addition to the Clisp Studio
application. Some of these may already be installed, in which case some installation steps can be omitted.

If a package requests a computer restart, please postpone this until the full Clisp
Studio installation has been completed.

Accept the ‘Terms and Conditions’ of any package that requests it.

First of all, the setup package will install the appropriate .NET framework (if not already present on the PC).

Then a number of packages will be installed and a number of screens will be displayed. If not already available,
the setup will install the SQL-Express database server on which Clisp Studio relies. The Express version does
not require a license and the initial window is shown in Figure 2. Click on the ‘Accept’ button to continue with the
installation.

The ‘Report Viewer’ initial window in Figure 3 is displayed. Click on the ‘Accept’ button to continue with

If not already installed, the setup process will have installed the drivers and software needed to access the
dongle or HASP key provided by VJTech. This key contains the licenses to run authorised types of tests and
needs to be inserted into a free USB port on the PC.

The ‘Clisp Studio License Agreement’ screen is displayed (Figure 13). Select the ‘I Agree’ radio button
and then click on ‘Next’.

Please select the modules of interest. Remember that at run time the HASP key must contain a valid license for
the test type in order to be able to create or open instances of those tests.

IMPORTANT
For a description of the Test Types, and instructions on how to use each one within Clisp Studio, please
refer to the User Guide relevant to the Test Type

The installation will leave two shortcuts on the desktop, one to start the Clisp Studio program and the
other to open a window containing shortcuts to all User Guides. There are also a number of items in the
Windows Start programs list in the VJ Tech folder as shown in Figure 20.

If one of the packages requested a computer restart, now is the time to do it.

To Uninstall Clisp Studio use the Windows Control Panel Programs options.

2 Database Options
2.2 Setting up the Database
Double click the Clisp Studio icon on the Desktop to start the program.

When started for the very first time, Clisp Studio will look for the database to use. Since initially there is no
database, it must be created.

From the ‘Files’ pull-down menu on the toolbar, select the ‘Database Connection’ menu option to
establish a link to the database server.

Figure 21 - Selecting Database Connection Option

After a short time the window in Figure 22 will be displayed.

Figure 22 - SQL Database Connection Window

The ‘Name’ pull-down menu in the SQL Server top panel displays a list of available database servers.
Choose the server to be used from the list and select the ‘Connect’ button or enter the text
‘.\SQLEXPRESS’ to use the local PC.

The pull-down menu adjacent to the ‘Options’ pull-down menu in the lower Database panel contains a list of
existing valid Clisp Studio databases provided by the selected server. To create a new Database to use with

Clisp Studio, click on the ‘Options’ button and from the pull-down menu select the option ‘Create a new
Database’ (Figure 23).

Figure 23 - Creating a new Database

The ‘New DataBase Selection’ window will be displayed (Figure 24). Enter a name that will identify this
database, tick the ‘Set up default user tables’ checkbox if required and click on ‘OK’.

Figure 24 - New DataBase Selection

Clisp Studio will then use a predefined SQL script to create a new suitable database named exactly as the name
entered above. After this, the database is ready to be used. If the local SQLEXPRESS server is being used, the
database is created in the folder [Program Files]\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data
At any other time new databases can be created or existing ones selected as required. When switching between
different databases, ensure that the database currently in use does not include active tests.

Other database Options provided by the dialogue include:

 Attach an existing Database

This option loads a database file into the database server so that it can be accessed and queried. It
does NOT load it into Clisp Studio, but once attached will be available in the list for selection. A file
dialogue window will appear where the desired file location can be accessed.

 Detach this Database

This option removes the database file shown in the list of databases from the database server. It cannot
be the same database that is currently used by Clisp Studio; therefore to detach a database, first a
different database must be selected for use by Clisp Studio. Detaching a database does not erase it, it
simply removes it from the database server.

 Backup this Database

This option creates a backup file of the database file shown in the list of databases. The name and
location of the backup file will need to be entered. Any of the available database files can be backed up,
including the database currently in use by Clisp Studio.

 Restore a Database from a previous backup

This option loads a backup file created using the ‘backup’ option above, overwriting the file loaded on
the database server. It cannot be the same as the database in use by Clisp Studio.

 Manage Database users

This option enables other Users to be allowed or denied access to this Database. Users can be Added
or Removed as required

To use a Database, it must be selected from the list and the ‘Select’ button clicked. The ‘Current Connection
String’ shown at the bottom of the window is the key for the proper operation of the Clisp Studio program.

After a Database has been created and selected, Clisp Studio is ready to be used.

2.3 Viewing the Database

From the ‘Files’ pull-down menu on the toolbar, select the ‘Database Explorer’ menu option and then the
‘Test Explorer’ option.

Figure 25 - Test Explorer Selection

The ‘Test Explorer’ window will be displayed on the right hand side of the screen as shown in Figure 26
(L) (Database currently empty). With the ‘Active’ tab selected, the top half summarises the current active
Database and the bottom half contains details of the currently selected or most recently selected Test.
Selection of the ‘Archived’ tab will display all Tests available in the Database, with those greyed out being
Active Tests Figure 26 (R).
