the following mappings:

1 i
(i) w = (ii) w = (iii) w = z −2 .
z z
2. Find and sketch the images of the region y > −1 under the following mappings:

(i) w = iz (ii) w = (1 + i)z (iii) w = (1 − i)z + 2i .

3. Find the domain and the range of each of the following functions and also write each
function in the form w = u(x, y) + iv(x, y) :
z+5
(a) f (z) = |z−3| for |z − 3| = 10.
(b) f (z) = z + 7 for Re(z) > 0.
(c) f (z) = z 2 for z in the first quadrant Re(z) ≥ 0, Im(z) ≥ 0.
(d) f (z) = z1 for 0 < |z| ≤ 1.
(e) f (z) = −2z 3 for z in the quarter disc |z| < 1, 0 < Argz < π2 .

4. Let f : C/{1} → C be the map defined by

z̄ − 1
f (z) = .
z−1
Examine whether limz→1 f (z) exists.

5. Check if the following functions can be prescribed a value at z = 0 so that they become
continuous:
|z|2 z+1 z̄
f (z) = ; f (z) = ; f (z) = .
z |z| − 1 z

6. Suppose that f is analytic in a domain D. Prove that in each of the following cases:
(a) Re(f ) is constant;
(b) Im(f ) is constant;
(c) |f | is constant;
one can conclude that f is constant.

7. Show that the only entire function f : C → C of the form f (x + iy) = u(x) + iv(y) is
given by f (z) = λz + a for some λ ∈ R and a ∈ C.

8. Determine a so that u = cosh(ax) cos(y) is harmonic. Then find its harmonic conjugate.

9. Find an analytic function w = u + iv = f (z) that maps the region 0 < arg z < 5 onto
the region u < 1.

10. Let the function f (z) = u(x, y) + iv(x, y) be analytic in some domain D. State why
the functions
U (x, y) = eu(x,y) cos v(x, y), V (x, y) = eu(x,y) sin v(x, y)

are harmonic in D and why V (x, y) is, in fact, a harmonic conjugate of U (x, y)?

11. Suppose that, in a domain D, a function v is a harmonic conjugate of u and also that
u is a harmonic conjugate of v. Show that it follows that both u(x, y) and v(x, y) must be
constant throughout D.

12. Let f (z) = z 3 . For z1 = 1 and z2 = i, show that there does not exist any point c on
the line y = 1 − x joining z1 and z2 such that
f (z1 ) − f (z2 )
= f 0 (c).
z1 − z2
(Mean value theorem does not extend to complex derivatives).

13. Show that the function f (z) = z̄ is not differentiable at any point of C. Find the points
of differentiability of the function fa (z) = (z − a)Re(z − a), for a given a ∈ C.

14. Show that f 0 (z) does not exist at any point z when (a) f (z) = Re(z); (b) f (z) = Im(z).

15. Let u and v denote the real and imaginary components of the function f defined by
( 2

f (z) = z , z 6= 0
0, z = 0.

Show that the Cauchy-Riemann equations are satisfied at the origin z = (0, 0) but f 0 (0) does
not exist.

16. If f is analytic in a domain Ω with f 0 ≡ 0. Prove that f is a constant function.

17. If v is a harmonic conjugate of u(u, v real-valued), prove that the functions uv and
u2 − v 2 are also harmonic.

18. What are real-valued harmonic functions u on D such that u2 is also harmonic?

(a) u(x, y) = 2xy.
(b) u(r, θ) = rn cos nθ, n ∈ N.

(c) u(x, y) = x2 − y 2 + x + y − x2 +y 2 , (x, y) 6= (0, 0).
