This research is dedicated to the students in Ormoc City Senior High School (OCSHS) and for the
future students and teachers. This research will contribute information to the students of what is the
importance of wearing school uniform. This also may accessible to the readers to get more knowledge
why wearing school uniforms should be wearing in a proper way and the significant. Itis dedicated to all
students in order to know what the purpose of having a school uniform in one school or university.

ABSTRACT
Content Analysis
Wearing school uniforms results in positive and negative effects and this is what researchers aim
for. The aim of the well-established school is to increase the rate of security in school, to regulate and
discipline students. Numerous schools embraced school uniforms as a way to add on safety and decreases
aberration in schools. In actuality, the parents of some students have raised questions and disapproves
regarding on uniform policy. The government officials are in favor of freedom for students but they
support the uniform policy for students to be more discipline. From the data that has been gathered, the
researchers conclude that the majority of the students says that there is a significant essence of wearing
school uniform is and it has a positive effect on it. There are strong supporters and arguments for both
sides of this issue, but in order to better understand the conflict, you must understand all of the benefits
and consequences that come from implementing a mandatory school uniform. This should be strongly
implemented for it is necessary as a student and it determines where the student is particularly studying in
case of some incidents that will going to happen. School uniforms can also reduce the clothing costs for
parents. Students who attend schools without a uniform policy may be more concerned about wearing
stylish or expensive clothing. That’s why that uniform is important as a student, it has a great impact, and
wearing school uniform has an effect in the Grade 11 students in STEM, HUMSS, and ABM students.

CHAPTER I
Introduction
Should students wear school uniforms? Is it an advantage or disadvantage for the students? Some
are agreeable to uniforms especially the young ones or the children. But by the time that they hit middle
school or in an adolescent stage, it becomes a subject for debate. Wearing school uniforms results in
positive and negative effects and this is what researchers aim for. The aim of the well-established school
is to increase the rate of security in school, to regulate and discipline students. Numerous schools
embraced school uniforms as a way to add on safety and decreases aberration in schools. In actuality, the
parents of some students have raised questions and disapproves regarding on uniform policy. The
government officials are in favor of freedom for students but they support the uniform policy for students
to be more discipline. Others would wear fancy clothes like tubes, miniskirts and short for women and it
attracts accidents. A school uniform is implemented and has been agreed by majority for it is for the
equality of students because if you wear fancy clothes, it increases the factors of jealousy and competition
on which outfit looks more fancy. Students nowadays do not give importance on wearing school uniform
and following the uniform policy because all they want is to be fashionable, even if wearing fashionable
clothes or civilian is more comfortable for other students than wearing school uniform. That’s why
researchers study this issue in school because they observed that mostly, students don’t give importance
on wearing school uniform. This study aims to know the students perspective about school uniform and to
evaluate if school uniform is an advantage or disadvantage for the students. According to Saunders, the
behavior pattern of students is totally different when uniform system is implemented. He compares it to
night and day. Just like day full of light and glorious sunshine which same as students wearing uniforms,
full of enthusiasm and concentration for academic improvement. Whereas, night represents dark evil and
the same happens when students are without uniform, jealousy, fights, and even killings takes place out of
1
Background of the Study
School uniforms are nothing new to most of the world’s public and private schools, but in the
United States, the use of uniforms in public school is almost unheard of the way that students dress may
seem insignificant to the learning environment, but it absolutely plays a large role. There are strong
supporters and arguments for both sides of this issue, but in order to better understand the conflict, you
must understand all of the benefits and consequences that come from implementing a mandatory school
uniform (flowpsychology.com). In many schools around the world, students are required to wear
uniforms; however, other educational institutions do not implement this rule as part of the decision
reached by their boards and the parents. On your end, do you think if wearing school uniform is good?
This has become a subject of some arguments between proponents and critics (Green Garage The Eco
Friendly Bag). We all know that wearing school uniform is strictly monitored by faculty teachers and
principal. Before, they value the essence or importance of wearing school uniform but as the years and
decades goes by, students ignore the importance of uniform. Some students prefer to wear civilian than
wearing uniform because as what the researchers observed, students more likely want to wear fashionable
clothes for them to look fashionable. Nevertheless, some still prefers wearing school uniform as a sign of
dedication to their respective school and an identity for the students to identify which school he/she
belongs. Wearing school uniform is advisable for the students, for them to recognize where are they
studying and wearing school uniform can make a student look more elegant and clean. Researcher
conduct this study about the uniform policy, which is our respondents, were the Grade 11- HUMMS,
STEM and ABM. The researchers observed that most of the students do not give thee uniform
importance. There are effects on wearing school uniform and that is what the researchers want to know by
doing a survey and conclude answers from the respondents. Wearing school uniforms is very important to
the students, it is advisable to the students, and it is under the uniform policy that students should follow it
to be called a student.
2
Statement of the Problem
The belief that fashionable clothing worn to school by students influences their attitudes and
behavior is the main impetus behind the more strict policies and this includes the school uniforms. The
mandatory uniform dress policy was been implemented since then but the problem is there is no
significant data that had been collected to evaluate its impact on students outcome.
This study aims to know the effects of wearing school uniforms to student’s behavior and the reasons why
wearing school uniform is debatable for the students in Ormoc City Senior High School.

Scope and Delimitation
The main focus of this study is to determine the different reasons of every student why wearing
school uniforms are very important. The participants involved in this study are Humanities and Social
Sciences (HUMSS), Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) and Accountancy and
Business Management (ABM) strands only or the academic track. The aspects looked into the different
respond of students and what they think or the assumptions of why some students hate wearing school
uniforms during school days. It delimits that the study may not be generalizable to other populations,
schools and other students especially the other strands that are not included in the study.

CHAPTER II
Nowadays, students have forgotten the importance of wearing a school uniforms especially the
purpose why there is school uniform for every schools or university. Many students now are not
interested anymore to wear their uniforms they likely prefer to wear civilians during school days. Unlike,
before even if they have only one paired uniform they find a way to wear it within a week. They seem to
have a competition of wearing modernized outfits when they go to school. Moreover, some students are
not cautious of what they wear; not conservative. They wear denim miniskirts, tattered jeans, off shoulder
top andcrop top tees, which almost sees their stomach. In addition, wearing school uniforms are not
valued anymore.
According to the Wikipedia (2019), a uniform means a set of standard clothing worn by members
of an organization while participating in that organization’s activity. People generally wearing uniforms
are armed forces, police, emergency services, schools and workplaces. Uniform also means to be the
same, and without any difference. With these basic ideas in mind, the concept of having a common dress
came in to picture. If the dress of the members of an organization remains the same then there is a sense
on commonality, which develops amongst them. Moreover, in 2014, Edd Biado ―the greatest advantages
of wearing uniforms that proponents cite are (1) lack of hierarchy, (2) focusing students’ attention to
education and away from ―distractions,‖ like fashion, (3) sense of belonging and promotion of school
spirit, (4) security in uniformity, making outsiders easier to spot, and (5) monetary savings. Because
everyone is wearing the same thing, the line between the rich, the poor is blurred, and the distinction is
not as obvious as when students are free to decide on their own outfits. This, supposedly, discourages the
formation of cliques based on social status and gives the underprivileged more self-confidence as they are
less prone to discrimination and bullying. With the absence of personal style, fashion-reinforced
stereotypes are also out of the equation. Since school uniforms are mostly more formal in appearance than
6
regular street clothing, prescribing them is said to train students to dress appropriately for the academic
According to Chloe Spencer (2013), ―a school uniform teaches students to dress smartly and take
pride in their appearance. Howlette says: ―Uniforms help students to prepare for when they leave school
and may have to dress smartly or wear a uniform.‖ Some people believe that a school uniform can
improve learning by reducing distraction, sharpening focus on schoolwork and making the classroom a
more serious environment, allowing students to perform better academically. Perhaps most importantly, a
uniform means students do not have to worry about peer pressure when it comes to their clothes. When
everyone is dressed the same, worrying about what you look like is not so important. There is no
competition about being dressed in the latest trend, which would put a great deal of financial pressure on
students and parents. Potential bullies have one less target for their insults; it is hard to make fun of what
According to a 2005 study, researchers found that an Ohio school that recently implemented a
uniform policy saw an increase in attendance as well as in the total number of graduates for the 2005
school year. There have also been instances of fewer suspensions in schools that require students to wear
uniforms or adhere to a strict dress code. The general belief is that since all students are wearing
uniforms, there are fewer distractions in classrooms of students worrying about what they and others are
wearing. School uniforms also help to boost morale and school spirit since students are wearing their
school colors together. They look more unified, which in turn creates a feeling of community and
In addition, UCLA School of Education says, "I think its great news for all of us who have
advocated school uniforms as a way of building community.‖ A pressing issue, bullying has become a big
problem in many school, and to eliminate this problem, school policies should require students to wear
uniforms. Many people believe that school uniforms build the community into a safer, more positive
7
environment. School uniforms improve school academics, prevent gang violence, and assist families, who
cannot afford expensive clothing. Worrying more about others, rather than themselves, students pay more
attention to the appearance of their peers (MITCHELL, 2016).School uniforms help to eliminate bullying
due to the fact that everyone is dressed the same and children cannot be teased for wearing something
unusual or different. Uniforms can create an environment of equality since students from different
economic backgrounds wear the same clothing, which can reduce bullying of those who may not be able
to afford stylish or expensive clothing. School uniforms allow school intruders to be easily identify,
which is extremely important in a world of school shootings. Similarly, if a student kidnapped or leaves
school at an unauthorized time, they are more easily identifiable to the authorities if they are wearing a
Donohue (1996), states in response to growing levels of violence in schools, teachers, parents,
and school officials have come to see school uniforms as one positive and creative way to reduce
discipline problems and increase safety. They believe that the adoption of school uniform policies can
promote school safety, improve discipline and enhance the learning environment.
In the Washington (District of Columbia) schools, a study of the impact of uniform/dress codes
and practices on school climate, educational attainment, and student affective and cognitive domains was
conducted.
(1) reasons cited for interest in a uniform policy were based on the need to teach students that cloths do
not make a person, financial savings for family, and parent concern that children might participate in an

policy;
(3) parents were usually involved in developing a uniform policy in elementary schools;
8
(4) there was no significant change in the overall attendance or educational attainment after implementing
a policy; and
(5) parents and school staff believe that wearing uniforms has had a positive impact on school climate
(Stevenson 1991).
In fact, ―for the past decade, schools, parents and students have clashed over the issue of
regulating student attire. In 2007, cases involving an anti-Bush T-shirt in Vermont, an anti-gay T-shirt in
San Diego, and Tigger socks in Napa, California, made their way through the courts, causing many to
wonder whether this debate will ever be resolved. Meanwhile, researchers are divided over how much of
an impact — if any — dress policies have upon student learning. A 2004 book makes the case that
uniforms do not improve school safety or academic discipline. A 2005 study, on the other hand, indicates
that in some Ohio high schools uniforms may have improved graduation and attendance rates, although

also help to boost morale and school spirit since students are wearing their school colors together. They
look more unified, which in turn creates a feeling of community and cohesiveness while reducing feelings
of competition.
Students who wear a uniform to school spend much less time getting ready in the morning than
students who do not wear uniforms. They don't need to spend time thinking about what to wear or having
to try on several different outfits. This allows some students to get more sleep since they can wake up
later in the morning knowing they do not have to spend as much time getting dressed. They are also more
9
likely to have time to eat a nutritious breakfast before school, which gives them the energy they need to
School uniforms can also reduce the clothing costs for parents. Students who attend schools
without a uniform policy may be more concerned about wearing stylish or expensive clothing. Parents of
students who attend a school with a uniform policy spend up to $150 less on clothing each year, as stated
by the National Retail Federation. Hence, ―the percentage of public schools that reported they have made
wearing school uniforms in 2003-2004 and 2011-2012 was from 13 to 19%, most of which were public
schools with high poverty levels. The school-sanctioned uniform policy is becoming popular among
districts and schools in the hopes of school administrators that students will have better grades, increased
self-esteem and better behavior. As reviewed by the author of the book The School Uniform Movement
and What It Tells Us About American Education, David Brunsma, there have been negative perceptions
On the other hand National Association of Secondary School Principles stated that ―When all
students are wearing the same outfit, they are less concerned about how they look and now the fit in with
their parent's; thus, they can concentrate on their school work". According to Chris Hammons, Principal
of Woodland Middle School in Coeur d' lene.ID, stated, "Uniforms provide for less distraction, less
drama and more of a focus on learning". Wearing school uniforms often directly contributed to a feeling
of school pride" a study from Oxford Brooke's University in the United Kingdom. Arnold Goldstein,
PhD. head of the center for Research on Aggression at Syracuse University, stated that uniforms help
troubled students feel they have the support of a community. Former US secretary of state and
Presidential candidates Hillary Clinton, advocated school uniforms as a way to help students focus on
learning. He stated that "Take that [clothing choices] off the table and put the focus on school, not on
what you're wearing. A peer- reviewed study found that after uniforms were introduce "Teachers

perceived an increase in the level of respect, caring and trust throughout the school" and said "students are
made to feel important and as if they are part of a team by wearing a school uniforms.
Consequently, some people argue against students having to wear uniforms because it conflicts
with their rights to self-expression. They believe students should be able to express their personality and
creativity by dressing the way they want. Some parents also feel that having to pay for uniforms conflicts
with their right to send their child to a free public school. They feel that uniforms impose an extra expense
they should not have to incur to provide their child with a free education. They argue school uniforms
actually create a larger target for bullying, as students from other schools easily single out students in
uniforms. Some students may also feel resentment toward their school for making them wear a uniform,
which can cause behavioral problems that would not ordinarily exist in schools where uniforms are not
mandatory (2005).

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research Design
In this study, the researchers finds answer and wants to know about the effects of wearing
uniform within the school to the students in HUMSS, ABM, and STEM of Ormoc City Senior High
School (OCSHS) using the help of the case study design. Case study is a research strategy and an
empirical inquiry that investigates a phenomenon within its real-life context (Press Academia). The case
of this study focuses on the perspective of students about uniform policy and is based on an in-depth
Research Sample
The researchers used the probability sampling a technique in which sample from a larger
population are chosen using a method based on the theory of probability. For a participant to be
considered as a probability sample, he/she must be selected a random selection. Everyone in the
population where the study conducted has an equal chance of being selected (QuestionPro). Under the
categorization of probability sampling the researchers used the cluster sampling is a method to select a

To sum up the information in the study conducted the researchers conclude that wearing school
uniforms is extremely important for the students because there are so many benefits that we can obtain.
Conclusion
To sum up all the information that has been gathered, we conclude that there is consensus on the
overall effect of a school uniform policy. Studies reviewed on school uniform and what is the impact of
this in terms of their social status, gender and personality and it shows that there is a correlation between
them. The literature showed that most students are in favor on wearing school uniform rather than the
fashionable ones. Since most students agreed on it, a uniform policy should be implemented, strictly
