METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents the research methodology adopted for the study. It is organized under
the following sub-headings; Research Design, Area of Study, and Population of the Study,
Sample Size and Sampling Techniques, Instrument for Data collection, Validity of the
Analysis.
The research design adopted for this study is the descriptive survey research design which is
concerned with conditions or relationships that exist and practices that prevail. It is a model
for attestation that allows the researcher to draw deductions as to the causal relations between
adult education programs and cultism in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Gokana is a Local Government Area in Rivers State, Nigeria. Its headquarters are in the town
of Kpor. It has an area of 126 km² and a population of 228,828 at the 2006 census. Gokana is
divided into sixteen towns, each headed by a king. The sixteen towns are further subdivided
into villages. All sixteen towns have one common ancestry.the native Gokana week is made
up of five days, Maa, Bon, Zua, SJon, Koo (pronounced cur). Koo is the official sabbath or
rest day when our indigenes were to stay at home and not go to the farm. The Gokana people
have a rich cultural heritage. There are several community secondary schools in Gokana

3.3 Population of the Study
The population of the study was 1,403 members of various youth groups/organization in
communities in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State. The population is restricted
to youths in organized groups comprising (comprising both young men and young women
between ages 18years to 40years) in eight communities namely; Barako, B. Dere, Deoyor,
kpor, K. Dere, Lewe, Bodo and Yeghe. The population of study is described in Table 3.1.
The sample size of the study was 78 members of various youth groups/organization in
Gokana LGA. The proportionate sampling technique was adopted in selecting 10% of the
population of each of the youth groups in the study area. Table 3.2 describe the sample of the
study.

3.5 Instrument for Data Collection
The instrument for data collection in this study was a questionnaire which was titled; Adult
Education Programs for Reducing Cultism (AEPRC). The instrument is divided into two
sections. Section A will contain demographic information of the respondents while section B
will contain statement items from the research questions. The respondents would be
requested to respond to research questions items based on a four point modified likert scale of
Strongly Agree (SA-1, Agree (A)--2, Disagree (D)--3 and Strongly Disagree (SD)--4.
To validate the instrument, the content and face validity was determined by the expert
judgment of the researcher’s supervisor and two other experts in the field of Measurement
and Evaluation, Rivers State University. The suggestions in regards to the scope,
comprehensive, face and logical validity were used to draw the final instrument.
In order to ensure the reliability of the instrument, the test-retest method was adopted. In this
method, 20 copies of the questionnaire were administered to 20 respondents who are not part
of the sample for the study. After two weeks, the same instrument was re-administered to the
same people. The two sets of scores were analysed using Cronbach alpha to ascertain
In collecting the data for the study, the researcher visited the schools personally to administer
the questionnaire. In the schools, research assistant was implored to assist in the
administration of the questionnaire. The use of a research assistant in the distribution of the
instrument was because s/he was familiar with the environment as well as their levels more

than the researcher. As such, a combination of the researcher and the assistant facilitated the
Data will be analyzed using statistical tools such as percentage and arithmetic mean to answer
the research questions. The t-test will be used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of
significance.
