The Halligan was designed by and named after a
New York City Fire Department (FDNY) First Deputy
Chief named Hugh Halligan in 1948. Later that year,
the first prototype of the Halligan bar was made by
Peter Clarke (a blacksmith).[3] Because the device
had been invented by one of its members, the
FDNY did not initially purchase the tool because of
a perceived conflict of interest.[4] The Boston Fire

of New York ladder companies went out and bought it
with their own money until the department ultimately
decided to purchase the tool, gradually leading to
widespread adoption across North America and

most versatile hand tool to be used for the past seven
decades for a multitude of fire-fighting tasks.

A little more about
the Fireman’s tool
The Halligan tool has
been an important part of
a firefighter’s toolkit ever
since it was created.
Prior to the Halligan,
firefighters typically
carried a Claw tool,
and a Kelly tool. The
designs of these tools
were imperfect. They
were heavy, and left little
margin for error, making
them troublesome. Many
firefighters who used these
tools were left with elbow
and arm injuries.
Weighing it at around
eight pounds, the Halligan
is comprised of three,
much lighter, components:
• Adz – for prying and
additional leverage
• Pick – for quickly
breaching locked
doors
• Fork – for breaking
latches and locks
It was designed with
an eye toward maximum
utility, efficiency and
speed for the purpose
of forcible entry and
emergency demolition.
Its versatility has led

The Glasgow Recreation Department is starting
sign-ups for the fall football and soccer programs.
For football, there will be a 3rd-4th grade group as
well as a 5th-6th grade group. In the past there have been
four teams per group but will depend on the number
of participants. Once registration and rosters have
been completed there will be an equipment checkout
followed by practices then games. Any questions call
the GRD at 228-8341.

3rd anytime from 5-7 p.m. for schedules and further
information. The first practice will be on Tuesday,
