Benefits to Students and Staff

 The Virtual Instrumentation Lab can provide facilities for students to carry out their
undergraduate and postgraduate projects.
 The proposed Lab can encourage students to participate in various competitions and
prestigious awards by implementing their ideas in various disciplines.
 The lab can be used to conduct short-term courses for faculty and students from various
engineering colleges.
 The proposed lab can establish interaction with industries and research organisations and
give consultancy support to the industries.
 The lab can be utilised by faculty members to pursue their research work.

Technical novelty and utility

 Virtual instrumentation lab delivers instruments with the rapid adaptability required for
product and process design, development and delivery.
 With the help of virtual instrumentation, students and faculty members can create the
user-defined instruments required to meet out the needs of new product design.
 Virtual instruments are defined by the user, while traditional instruments have fixed
vendor-defined functionality. In a conventional instrument, the set of components that
comprise the instrument is fixed and permanently associated with each other.
 A virtual instrument provides all the software and hardware needed to accomplish the
measurement or control task.
 The virtual instrument can be customised the acquisition, analysis, storage, sharing and
presentation functionality using productive, robust software.
 Without the displays, knobs and switches of conventional, external box-based
instrumentation products, a virtual instrument uses a personal computer for all user
interaction and control.
 The primary benefits of apply data acquisition technology to configure virtual
instrumentation include costs, size, and flexibility and ease of programming. The cost to
configure a virtual instrumentation-based system using a data acquisition board or cards
can be as little as 25% of the cost of a conventional instrument.

Objectives Current lab utilisation Strength & Weakness of Lab

 Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering have Control and Instrumentation
lab utilised by UG students of EEE, ECE and Mechanical Engineering.
 The Control and instrumentation Laboratory is a comprehensive teaching package
covering transfer functions of machines, and understanding the working principle of
various Sensors/Transducers and their performance can be evaluated by various tests.
 With purpose-built, bench-standing industrial machines and instrumentation to perform a
complete set of experiments that enables them to study the characteristics of each device
under different operating conditions.
 Further the modelling and analysis of various linear and non-linear systems were carried
out using computer-based simulation.
 The experiments are designed to provide students with essential knowledge and practical
skills on compensator design and simulation software that make them better prepared for
future engineering jobs.
Objectives:
 Investigate the behaviour of various types of systems (Type 0,Type1, etc.) using PID
controllers and study the behaviour of compensators.
 Determine the transfer function of machines and calculate the energy consumption in
single-phase circuits
 Predict the behaviour of the position control system and determine the values of passive
elements for the given networks using various bridges.
 Simulate the various control systems and analyse the stability using MATLAB.
 Analyse the performance of various transducers and signal conditioning circuits
Strength & Weakness of Lab:
 Control and Instrumentation Lab has enough number of components for pursuing the
experiments in the syllabus prescribed by the university. Besides the lab also consists of
types of equipment for pursuing the experiments in content beyond the syllabus.
 Lab updated with latest embedded controllers like Arduino and Raspberry Pi with bundle
of different sensors and transducers.
 The C&I lab facilitates with different ranges of PV panel for understanding concepts of
solar power system.
