TraceSpan’s GPON Tracer is an advanced handheld tester for on-site GPON
network monitoring and troubleshooting. It is the ideal tool for telecom field
engineers involved in GPON network troubleshooting, as well as for customer
support teams of OLT and ONU manufacturers. With its user-friendly touch-screen
interface, GPON Tracer provides a rich variety of real-time indications in textual
and graphical formats, including downstream and upstream data rates, optical
power levels, transmission errors, and service interruptions.
The GPON Tracer can be connected on the OLT side or the ONU side of the PON.
OLT-side connection offers full PON visibility, with full upstream and
downstream measurements. ONU-side connection provides full ONU-specific
measurements.
The GPON Tracer also supports recording and export of GPON protocol data and
user data for extensive analysis by the GPON Xpert™ multi-layer analyzer.
This Getting Started Guide provides instructions for connecting the GPON Tracer
to the OLT and ONU sides, and explains GPON Tracer operation so you can
quickly benefit from its advanced functionality.

Overview
Hardware Overview
The GPON Tracer (Figure 1) is compact and ergonomic, with a touch-screen and
built-in stylus for accessing and performing all functions.
For detailed GPON Tracer specifications, see Appendix A.

Figure 1. GPON Tracer

Optical connectors for the three different connections modes (see GPON Fiber
Connectivity) are located at the top of the GPON Tracer. Each set of connectors is
covered by a lid that should remain closed when not in use.

5
GPON Tracer Getting Started Guide

In OLT serial mode, use single mode SC/APC fibers to connect the PON to the top
left of the GPON Tracer, as shown in Figure 2.

Figure 2. Top View - Near OLT Serial Connection

For OLT parallel mode, four LC/APC connectors are located on the top, middle of
the GPON Tracer as shown in Figure 3. The GPON Tracer comes factory-installed
with jumpers between the two Down connectors and the two Up connectors. In
parallel mode, remove the jumpers and connect the downstream traffic to the right
connector of the left pair, and connect the upstream traffic to the left connector of
the right pair.
Note
For serial mode connections, these jumpers must remain connected. Failure to
follow this may result in improper operation of the GPON Tracer.

Figure 3. Top View - Near OLT Parallel Connection

Touching a button on the bottom of the screen will navigate to additional screens
as detailed below:
• The Graphs screen displays graphs of the measured parameters over time.
• The Diagnose screen lists problems and bottlenecks that were identified in the
network by correlating different measurements, thus speeding up the
troubleshooting process.
• The US Analysis screen provides a graphical view of the upstream
transmissions in comparison with the transmission plan assigned by the OLT
(BWmap allocations). It presents clear indications about correct transmissions
as well as missing or invalid ones and highlights collision problems, missing
bursts and rogue ONUs.

GPON Fiber Connectivity

To measure the GPON or record data, you must connect the GPON Tracer to the
PON at either the OLT or ONU side during the configuration process (see
Measuring and Recording).

OLT-Side Connection
When connected at the OLT side, the GPON Tracer monitors traffic for all ONUs
on the PON. As the OLT is typically located at a central location, an OLT-side
connection is generally very convenient. You can connect the GPON Tracer to the
PON either serially or in parallel:
• Serial connection (Figure 10) - all PON traffic passes through the GPON
Tracer. Therefore, while connecting, the service is temporarily disrupted.
Service is not affected after connecting is completed and the GPON Tracer is
configured.

Figure 10. OLT-side Serial Connection

• Parallel connection (Figure 11) - the GPON Tracer connects to the PON via a
splitter installed at the OLT to provide test access to upstream and downstream
traffic. In this case, no service disruption occurs, since fibers are not
disconnected while connecting the GPON Tracer. For timing calibration, re-
activate at least one of the ONUs after the GPON Tracer is connected.

13
GPON Tracer Getting Started Guide

Figure 11. OLT-side Parallel Connection

ONU-Side Connection
When connected on the ONU side, the GPON Tracer monitors traffic for the
nearby ONU through a serial connection (Figure 12). Service is disrupted only
when connecting the GPON Tracer to the PON (see Measuring and Recording).
