School Choices
Public Schools:
ƒ Most common
ƒ Majority of children at Army installations attend within the continental
United States (CONUS)
ƒ Always available

Private Schools:
ƒ Offered in many locations
ƒ Pay tuition in order for child to attend
ƒ Most preschools
ƒ Parochial schools run by churches

Home school:
ƒ Children taught at home
ƒ Each state has a home-schooling policy that must be followed
ƒ Restrictions exit
ƒ Many parent organizations or support groups are available

Charter Schools:
ƒ A public school that operates free from the standard regulations that applied to
traditional public schools
ƒ Relatively new; small; few grade levels; specialized group of students
ƒ Free
ƒ High academic standards, small class size, innovative approaches, educational
philosophies

Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA)


ƒ OCONUS: DoD Dependent Schools (DoDDS)
ƒ CONUS: Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS)
ƒ Large, geographically separated school system
ƒ Available to eligible military and authorized civilian family members from preschool
through grade 12 (DoDDS)
ƒ Elementary school (DDESS) only at Forts Benning, Stewart, Bragg, Buchanan,
Campbell, Rucker, USMA
