1. SCR V – I CHARACTERISTICS
1. Course, Subject &f Experiment Details

Academic Year 2019-2020 Estimated Time Experiment No.1- 02 Hours

Course & Semester B.E.- Semester 7 Subject Name Power Electronics Laboratory
Chapter No Chapter Title SCR
Experiment Type Hardware Subject Code ELXL702
Performance

2. Aim & Objective of Experiment

The aim of the experiment is to practically & experimentally obtain the V – I characteristics of
the silicon
Controlled rectifier (SCR) in the forward conduction region for different values of triggering
gate current
(IG). This experiment introduces students to the behaviour of the SCR in the forward
conduction region
& influence of SCR current (IAK) on the applied voltage (VAK) across it & the gate current (IG).

3. Expected Outcome of Experiment

Understanding the basic experimental set-up for SCR V – I characteristics

Understanding effect of triggering gate current (IG) on the SCR current (IAK)
Obtaining experimental values of SCR holding current (IH) & latching current (IL)
Calculating the ON state forward resistance (Rf) from the forward characteristics.

(b) Operation of SCR V – I Characteristics

The V – I characteristics of SCR is a graph of the anode-to-cathode current (IAK) on y-axis &
the anode to-cathode voltage (VAK) plotted on the x-axis. It can be split into two parts viz. the
forward operating characteristics & reverse operating characteristics. The forward
characteristics are divided into three regions of operation viz. forward blocking state,
transition or triggering state & ON or conduction state. Forward blocking state is the high
voltage low current mode of operation in which SCR is in OFF state.
The switching of SCR from OFF state to ON state takes place in short time. This change
over state is called as transition state or triggering state which is unstable. ON state or
conduction state is the low voltage high current state in which the SCR turns fully on & starts
conducting. The forward breakover voltage (VFBO) is the maximum forward voltage that can
be applied between anode & cathode beyond which SCR becomes on even without gate
current. The holding current (IH) is the minimum current that can flow through SCR & still
hold it in on state. Latching current (IL) is the minimum anode current that
must flow through SCR to latch it into on state.

6. Formulae & Calculations

7. Experimental Procedure

1. Connect the circuit setup as shown in the diagram & initially adjust gate current to
zero (IG = 0).
2. Initially vary anode-to-cathode voltage (VAK) from 0 to 10 V & note anode-to-
cathode current (IAK).
3. Gradually apply the gate voltage till SCR fires & note down corresponding values of
IG & IAK.
4. Make IG = 0 & decrease VAK, noting corresponding value of IAK (at a point where it
drops to zero).
5. Repeat above procedure for different values of the breakover voltage.
6. Plot graphically variations of IAK against VAK & calculate on-state forward resistance
as follows :-
