Argumentative Essay against Social Media

Thesis Statement: Social media is a powerful tactics, but only its intelligent use can
promise benefits to the user.

Introduction

- Social media is the reason for many of the world’s problems and solutions. It can
be used to raise awareness for an important cause, but it can also be used to spread
hate, especially between teenagers.
- Nowadays, a lot of people are using social media such as Facebook, Twitter,
Instagram and so on.
- It helps contact friends, family, and other people even though they live far away. It
could be, however, abused, if you don’t use properly.
- It is important that we understand and regulate the use of social media by young
children.
- Social media is a term used to describe the interaction between groups or individuals
in which they produce, share, and sometimes exchange ideas over the internet and
in virtual communities.
- The impact of social networks on young people is significant. Children are growing
up surrounded by mobile devices and interactive social networking sites

Body

- Advantages:
o Allows to improve relationships and make new friends beyond the
geographical and social boundaries.
o Social media spreads information faster than any other media
o social networks can act as invaluable tools for professionals. They achieve
this by assisting young professionals to market their skills and seek business
opportunities.
o Bridging gaps between countries and continents, one is never too far away.
One can connect to family and friends without any concept of being far away,
and that too very cheap.
o One can find solutions to their problems from the vast information available
online, or consulting e-resources.
o can give shy, under-confident teens a comfortable way to communicate --
one that’s less intimidating than meeting face-to-face. This can boost their
self-esteem and help them practice their social skills.
o Kids who have disabilities or other challenges can communicate with other
teens with similar problems. This lessens their sense of isolation and allows
for mutual support.

- Disadvantages
o The average teenager spends a minimum of 2 hours and 20 minutes on social
media every day.
o the time teenagers spend outside has decreased significantly causing more
depression and obesity. Not only does it affect health, social media deprives
parents from having a thorough conversation with their children without
them checking their phone.
o Even though the positive effect of having a social media profile is to
communicate with friends/family, they don’t even have the decency to lift
their head and engage in a conversation.
o Enjoying the little things around them becomes a difficult task to the average
teenager when they’re too busy tweeting about it. The contradicting effects
of it goes to show that social media is not all it is talked up to be.
o causes the insecurities and questionings to girls and boys. These misleading
pictures of how bodies, relationships, houses, cars, etc. should be are what
lowers self esteem and leads to depression and suicides.
o not only is social media misleading, it is also very unimportant. Social media
enables the spread of unreliable and false information
o Social media lowers a teenagers self-confidence.
o Spending too much time online could lead to social isolation, loneliness and
a negative outlook. These types of psychological symptoms could eventually
lead to more serious health concerns, such as heart disease, cancer and
dementia
o Private information is available to public and so it becomes dangerous and
vulnerable, unless the user has appropriately used privacy settings.

Conclusion

- There are advantages and disadvantages of using social media especially on

children, and others generally. However, the disadvantages are obviously more
serious and need to be addressed.
- There is a need to educate the users of social media to benefit from it rather than
waste their time and energies and loose their precious time. This can be done by
o Setting and enforcing reasonable rules and restrictions on your teen’s use of
online technology.
o Connecting with them on social media so you can see what they are doing
and how often they are using it.
o Being proactive. Make them understand by giving them examples and
showing them what can actually happen.
o Teaching them to use common sense and caution whenever they are online
so that they do not become victim
o Balancing their lives with physical social interaction so that they do not end
up spending all the time on machines.

Social media is a powerful tactics, but only its intelligent use can promise benefits to the
user.
