Subject: SCIENCE 10
Topic: Electromagnetic waves
Prepared by: Ms. Evangeline G. Abril Noted by: Donny Aris C. Malvar, Ed.D

I. Objectives:
Identify the different types of electromagnetic waves
Cite example of practical application of the different regions of
electromagnetic waves.
II. Reference:
Science Learner’s Material 10
III. Topic Title:
Practical Application of Electromagnetic waves

A wave is a disturbance that transfer energy. Electromagnetic waves have unique

properties. It can travel through a vacuum. It has an electric field that travels perpendicular
with the magnetic field. It is form when moving charged particles transfer energy through a
field.
There are seven types of electromagnetic waves, we have Radio waves which is used in
radio and television communication, Microwaves which is used in satellite television, radar
and communication. Infrared waves which is used in remote control, household electrical
appliances. Visible light which is used in artificial lighting, optical fibers in medical uses.
Ultraviolet which is used in sterilization and fluorescence. X-rays which is used in engineering
applications and Gamma rays used in medical treatment.

IV. Summary:
 Most Electromagnetic waves are invisible to the eye but detectable. Only visible
light also called white light is seen by humans.
 Gamma rays are used to treat cancer through the process called radiotherapy.
 Each type of wave poses a certain degree of risk and danger to people and
environment.
 Waves in the electromagnetic spectrum include the following from the longest
wavelength to the shortest wavelength. Radio waves, Microwaves, Infrared
waves, Visible light, Ultraviolet, X-rays, and Gamma rays. The order also shows
the increasing frequency and energy of Electromagnetic waves.
 X-rays were discovered by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen in 1895.
 The electromagnetic spectrum is a continuum of electromagnetic waves
arranged according to frequency and wavelength.
 Microwaves have smaller wavelengths than radio waves. They are used in
satellite communications, radar, and television transmission and cooking.
