Summary of the Book

Hygiene Factor- The term "hygiene" is used in the sense that these are maintenance factors.
There are only two outcomes in Hygiene factor, dissatisfaction and no dissatisfaction

1) SALARY-its reasonable and appropriate for the employees to receive their pay.
For example:
If the employee didn’t receive his/her salary it will cause dissatisfaction
but if the employee receives his/her pay then no dissatisfaction
2) WORKING CONDITION – your workplace should be clean, safe and hygienic
For example:

Imagine working in a place where it is dirty and polluted air, you will get sick and it will cause
dissatisfaction.

3) COMPANY POLICIES – It should not be too rigid and should be fair and clear
For example:

You have been assigned a task that needs to be done today and you have been asked to lessen
your break time in order for you to finish it, it will cause dissatisfaction.

4) INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIP- The relationship of the employees with his peers, superiors and
subordinates should be appropriate and acceptable, there should be no conflict and humiliation
element present

For example:

In your job your boss scolded and humiliated you in front of you subordinates, it will cause the
employee dissatisfaction

5) FRINGE BENEFITS – They should have benefits


For example:

Employees should be offered health care plans, and it will cause no dissatisfaction

6) STATUS – The employee’s status within the organization should be familiar and retained
For example:
If the employee is given a work or position which is not familiar, it will cause dissatisfaction

7) JOB SECURITY – Must provide security to the employees


For example:
If you’re working in a bank and there are no security guards, what if you get robbed?

You will feel dissatisfied with your work

MOTIVATIONAL FACTOR – Satisfaction and No Satisfaction


1) RECOGNITION – Employees should be praised for their accomplishments
For example:

If you worked hard and the manager praised and gave you a reward, you will be satisfied and
motivated in working
2) SENSE OF ACHIEVEMENT – There must be a fruit of some sort in the job
For example:

If an employee was ordered to do a hard task and finished it he/she will feel satisfied that he
finished a worked
3) GROWTH AND PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITIES – There must be growth and advancement
opportunities
For example:

If an employee gets promoted for his/her efforts, it will motivate him/her more in his/her job.

4) RESPONSIBILITY – The employee must hold themselves responsible for the work

For example:

The employee would put more effort and motivated in his/her work that the manager has trust
in him/her

5) MEANINGFULNESS OF THE WORK – The work should be meaningful, interesting and challenging for
them to get motivated.
For example:

If you are boss just orders you just to make his coffee, you won’t feel motivated in doing it
