File management
•  The .ssd file and .icd file are input to the system
configuration tool

•  The .scd file can be considered as a single source of the

configuration description
–  The .scd file can include IED specific configuration information in
a private section
–  The .scd file has a version and a revision identification that needs
to be maintained by the tool or by the user

•  Information from IED detail engineering may be added to

the global .scd file using the .iid file
–  File uncheck procedures need to be in place for a proper
handling
–  This can be supported by the tool or by a user guideline

IED class and template

•  For flexible IEDs, there
IED class exists multiple .icd files
all functional capabilities
not implementable

•  An flexible IED can be

seen as a IED class that
ICD 1
implementable supports many
subset 1 functionalities, but not all
ICD 2
implementable
at the same time
subset 2

•  An .icd file represents a

implementable subset of
an IED class

The IED data model

•  IED configVersion identifies basic configuration of an IED
(e.g. pre engineering of a flexibly engineerable IED type
for a specific task
•  The data model for an IED is typically defined during pre-
engineering
–  Presence of LNs, data, data attributes
–  Instance names, number of instances
–  Semantic use (e.g. which instance of LN PDIS serves which
zone)
•  Changes to the data model can only be made through the
IED tool (SCL)
•  Changes to the data model are indicated in the data
attribute configRev of the LN nameplate

UTINNOVATION

System engineering – data flow

•  Configure data flow for client server communication
–  Configure reports and required datasets
–  Pre-configure a client for the report through a client LN
(mandatory for buffered reports, optional for unbuffered reports)

•  Configure data flow for publish – subscriber services

–  Configure GOOSE and SMV controls and required datasets
–  Optionally configure subscribing IEDs

•  Configure inputs to LNs

–  Data required as inputs can be transmitted by GOOSE / SMV or
as reports
–  If both are available, it is up to the IED to decide which one to use

© 2015

Communication Behavior
•  Communication behavior is defined through control
blocks and data sets referred by control blocks
–  Changes can be made through SCL or in the IED through
communication services or local HMI

•  Changes of the communication behavior are indicated in

the attribute ConfRev of the affected control block
–  Increase by 1 for changes done in the IED
–  Increase by 10000 for changes in SCL file

•  Enabling or disabling of control blocks is not indicated
