TECHNICAL BACKGROUND

By formation acquired during the Laurea and Ph.D. courses, I developed strong bases
in pure mathematics (calculus, algebra, functional analysis) and related applied fields:
probability and statistics, fuzzy logic, optimization, numerical analysis. These
disciplines allowed me to explore in depth both the theory and applications of
machine learning, pattern recognition, information geometry, stochastic processes and
graphical models. My curriculum studiorum also includes theoretical and applied
computer science fields: formal language theories, formal system modeling, algorithm
analysis, software engineering.
My research activities focused in developing, both from the theoretical and
application viewpoint, methods which were founded on the above disciplines.
From a theoretical viewpoint, I developed a fuzzy-logic based algorithm for
classification and regression; a hierarchical learning scheme for neural networks
which allows a data-driven functional decomposition in linear and nonlinear
components; a class of learning machines for conditional probability estimation; an
efficient information geometric method for variable selection in learning machines.
From an application viewpoint, I mainly worked in the biostatistics/medicine and
physics fields.
In particular, I devised a Bayesian learning machine for efficient diagnosis in
oncology; I applied the learning machines for conditional probability estimation both
to prognosis in oncology and to time-series prediction. I developed models to forecast
pollutants concentration levels in the atmosphere; models to decompose laser
interferometric signals in linear and nonlinear components.
Recently, I have been involved in the development of graphical models of landslide
phenomena for early warning, and the modeling of noise components in
interferometeric data stream by Normal/Independent processes.
I am currently working as a Computer Scientist at the Department of Clinical
Engineering, Royal Liverpool University Hospital, where I work on data analysis
tasks (models for prognosis and diagnosis, functional modelling).
