Role: Intake Counselor in Member Service’s
Supervisor: Elise Schuster

SMART Goals
Part One
As an Intake Counselor at the Door, my main responsibilities involve
directly working with the young people that the Door serves. In the
Member Service’s department, I will be performing intake interviews
with young people in a one-on-one setting, in an attempt to get a
comprehensive overview of a young person’s personal background,
life, and goals, over the course of a 15-20 minutes interview. I am then
responsible for giving personal referrals to the young people and
helping them identify the services that will suit their purposes and/or
needs. Also, if an issues arises and a young person who is already a
member needs a referral or help finding the right department to fit
their needs, I am responsible for helping them find that.

Part Two

A. Intellectual

Goal: By week 9, learn more about the population of young people


who frequent the Door and use its services and what keeps them
coming back.
Means: Interviews with Young People, researching media/news articles
about The Door, possible staff interviews
Assessment: Field notes and final paper

Goal: By week 12, learn about the Door’s student retention rate and
what is being done agency-wide to raise it.
Means: Interviews with staff members in various departments,
observation
Assessment: Field notes and/or final paper

Goal: By week 15 (end of internship), investigate the Door’s funding


model and analyze whether it is the best fit for their needs or if
another model would work better.
Means: Research of funders, interviews with staff
Assessment: Final paper

B. Professional

Goal: By week 8, learn how to input new member intakes into the
Member Services Computer system.
Means: Shadowing and instruction
Assessment: Final Evaluation

Goal: By week 9, improve my knowledge of the Door’s services and


programs from young people.
Means: Attending agency wide workshops, researching programs,
interviews with staff members
Assessment: Field notes and performance

Goal: By week 12, be able to handle crisis intakes.


Means: Shadowing crisis intakes, performing regular intakes
Assessment: Field notes

C. Personal

Goal: By week 10, perform personal check ups with five (5) of the
young people I have done intakes with.
Means: Interviews, emails, and phone calls
Assessment: Field notes and Final Paper

Goal: By week 12, understand why other interns chose the Door to
perform their fieldwork with.
Means: Interviews
Assessment: Final paper and field notes

Goal: By week 15 (end of internship), decide whether working in a


community center environment, like the Door, is a place where I could
see myself in the future.
Means: Observation, field notes, interviews with staff members
Assessment: Final Evaluation
