Country: Ukraine

Committee: United Nations Global Compact

Delegate: Aditya Tandon
Agenda: Achieving Sustainable Development Through
Responsible Consumption and Production

The foreign policy of Ukraine generally follows the rest of the world. Despite being thrown into a
bloody civil war that has torn the country apart and ruptured international relations due to Russia’s
hidden interests, Ukraine realizes its position as the geographically largest country in Europe and
thus strives to be seen as a role model nation for sustainable development for other countries to
follow suit. Therefore, Ukraine has joined the global process of sustainable development.

Sustainable development is the development that satisfies the needs of the present without
compromising the natural capacity of future generations upon which the economy and society
depend. The Sustainable Development Goals, also known as the Global Goals, are a call from the
United Nations to all countries around the world to address the great challenges that humanity
faces and to ensure that all people have the same opportunities to live a better life without
compromising our planet.

A participatory and inclusive process to adapt the SDGs to the Ukranian context was launched to
establish a national strategic framework for Ukraine up to 2030 based on the principle ‘leave no
one behind’. Even the global target was revised, taking into consideration the specific national
context. In 2016, Ukraine held four national and ten regional consultations. Following the
consultations, we can conclude that the SDGs should ensure the national integration of efforts for
economic growth, a commitment to social justice and the need for environmental management.

Ukraine has been on the forefront of achieving the goals set by the UN. Therefore, has come up
with several possible solutions to this:
 High-Level Inter-agency Task Force was established for SDG implementation.
 17 subgroups were established as part of the High-Level Interagency Task Force.
 National consultations have been conducted (about 300 participants: government
agencies, UN agencies, other international organizations, scientific community, non-
governmental organizations and experts).
 Consultations have been conducted in 10 regions (about 700 participants: local
government authorities, international and nongovernmental organizations).
 “Sustainable Development Goals. Ukraine” National Report has been prepared, which
identifies the guides to be taken into account in the future for strategic planning of the
sectoral policies and programmes on the lines of ministries.

The Sustainable Development Goals: Ukraine” National Report represents a vision of the guides
UN Sustainable Development Summit 2015. It is focused on a human being and improvement of
quality of his/her life. It sets the strategic framework of the national development based on “no
one left behind” principle (taking into account the needs of the most vulnerable and poorest
population), and is a tool towards the EU (SDG implementation will contribute to implementation
of the international commitments by Ukraine and creation of the real prerequisites for Ukraine to
become a full member of the European Union

A special emphasis has been laid on Education, since Ukraine believes it is one of the most
important tools in achieving sustainable development
