Design of 3-Cell Box Culvert

Clear height of the box = 5.75 m

Clear length of the box = 6.05 m
Thickness of the slab = 0.55 m
thickness of the wall = 0.55 m
1. Base Pressure Check

Density of the soil = 18 kN/m3

Thickness of Overburden soil = 1.1 m
Net Allowable bearing capacity of soil = 70 kN/m2
Gross Allowable bearing capacity of soil = 89.8 kN/m2

since the maximum reaction occurs at load case 91. hence to check the bearing capacity,
reaction at load case 91 at different nodes are considered

From Staad Output Maximum reaction occur at node no 3049 under

Load combination 13, DL+SIDL+EP+LLS

Max Reaction
1) DL+SIDL+EP+LLS = 41.17 KN
2) LL = Node 3049
70RW+Class A = 11.54 LL Fy
70RT+Class A = 12.08 70RW 6.3
3L Class A = 10.09 70RT 6.84
40T Boggie+Class A = 10.36 ClassA 5.24
Max Carriageway LL = 12.08 KN 40T Boggie 5.12
TOTAL(DL+SIDL+EP+LLS+LL) = 53.25 KN 3L-ClassA 10.09

Influence area under node 3049

B = 0.605 m
L = 1.0 m
Therefore the influence area = 0.605 m2

Gross Pressure per m2 area at base = 88.02 kN/m2

Hence Safe
2. Stability Check For Washed Away Conditions (check against sliding)

when the box is on the verge of sliding, active earth pressure will generated on one side
and the pasive earth pressure will generated on another side

for   30 0 and    20 0

Active earth pressure coeff. Ka = 0.297

Passive earth pressure coeff. Kp = 6.1

from equation (1), passive pressure can calculate considering half height of the culvert

1 2
Fig. showing the cross-section of the box culvert

height of the box = 6.3 m

Thickness of the wearing course = 0.065 m

Earth pressure at node (4) = 0.297 x 0.065 x 18 = 0.35 kN/m2

Earth pressure at node (1) = 0.297 x (0.065 + 6) x 18 = 34.03 kN/m2

Forces acting on the wall connecting by node 1 and 4 = 108.28 kN/m2

1/2 x (2.406 + 29.136) x 6.3
Earth pressure at node (2) = 6.1 x 6.3/2 x 18 = 345.87 kN/m2

Forces acting on the wall connecting by node 2 and 3 = 544.75 kN/m2

1/2 x 345.87 x 6.3/2

as per the codal provision 50% of the passive forces haas to be considered

Therefore
Multiplying coeff. = 0.5
Factor of safety = 0.5 x 544.75 / 108.28 = 2.515
> 1.5, Safe
