MARINE PIPING SYSTEMS

Objectives:
Students are to be capable of :
– understanding & explaining
– calculating the required parameters
– determining the technical specs
– developing
basic designs / key-plan drawings of marine
piping systems that comply to Classification
Society Rules & Statutory Regulations and
related codes / standards.

 Main Subjects:
1. PIPING SYSTEMS ON BOARD
2. PIPES: Material of Pipes, Schedule Number, Pipe Standard, Pipes’ Classification
according to Classification Society.
3. FITTINGS: Types of Fittings and their functions, Approved types of fittings
according to Classification Society.
4. VALVES: Types of Valves and their functions, Application of valves on board,
Valves according to Classification Society.
5. OTHER ACCESSORIES.
6. TANKS: requirements for a tank, components on a tank, arrangement of a tank.
7. SEA-CHEST: Type & size of sea chest, components on a sea chest, arrangement
of a sea chest.
8. STANDARD AND METHODS FOR DRAWING a basic design drawing of marine
piping systems.
9. BILGE SYSTEMS AND OILY BILGE SYSTEMS: Basic design and key-plan drawing of
Bilge System.
10. BALLAST SYSTEMS: Ship’s stability, Types of Ballast system arrangement, key-
plan drawing of Ballast System.

14. FUEL OIL SYSTEMS: FO Transfer systems, FO purifying systems, FO
supply systems.
15. LUBRICATING OIL SYSTEMS: LO transfer systems, Main LO systems, LO

 GROUP PRESENTATION
• The Group shall discuss and approve their material to the
Lecturer. All members of the group shall attend during
supervision and approval discussions (Logbook provided).
• Each member in group shall be able to comprehensively
presents the material in detail.
• All parts of Presented Material shall be approved 7-days
prior to scheduled presentation.
• A Report shall be submitted, including all necessary
related materials (video, pics, dwg)
• Report shall include: Description, Rules & Regulation
related, calculations required, technical spec, and Key-
plans / drawings,
• Those who fail to comply the requirements will be
disqualified from the course.

COURSE ASSESMENTS
The students in the course subject will be assessed
according to:
1. Presentation and Discussion host and proceed by
the appointed group (10%)
2. Report submission of the presented topic (10%)
3. Assignments (10%)
4. Mid Exam 1 (20%)
5. Mid Exam 2 (20%)
6. Final Exam 3 (30%)

 RULES OF THE GAME
• Presentation shall be handled by all students in the
appointed group (All members in the group shall be
attending and actively take part)
• The presenting group shall prepare all necessary
facilities (AC, Laptop, LCD projector, attendants list, etc)
before the class to begin.
• The class will only proceed if attended by minimum 50%
of the number of students. Otherwise class is to be
dismissed.
• No entry after the Lecture
• Minimum number of attendances 80% (ITS
requirement).

1. GENERAL SERVICE SYSTEMS:

PIPING SYSTEMS Systems to provide general services regarding
safety to the vessel during sailing and
on ships berthing.
2. ME & AE AUXILIARY SYSTEMS:
Systems that required to support and to
properly run ME & AE, on which they are
not attached/ included in ME & AE
3. DOMESTIC SYSTEMS:
Domestic systems required to supply crews’
or passengers needs during sailing, such
as sanitary, drinking, cooking, shower, etc.
4. CARGO OIL SYSTEM FOR TANKERS:
Systems on tankers that required to loading
/off-loading cargo oil, and to support
operation and safety
5. OTHERS
Other piping systems such as hydraulic
systems, pneumatic systems etc.

 1. GENERAL SERVICE SYSTEMS
a. BILGE SYSTEM:
Systems to carry-out drainage in the
event of flooding and leaking in all
compartments on the vessel.
b. BALLAST SYSTEM:
System to manage ship’s stability by
means of managing the location and
weight of water ballast (hence, the
ship’s centre of gravity) to provide
safe operation during sailing and
cargoing.
c. FIRE MAIN SYSTEM:
Main fire-fighting systems using seawater
hydrants.
