Homework Information

We will start the year with Reading Homework. We will send home our first Reading
Homework on Friday, August 30th. Homework will be a month-long home reading
calendar that students will maintain and return on Monday, September 30th. We will
review the expectations and procedures with students before sending home the first
assignment.

● A Monthly Home Reading Calendar:

Each student will set a monthly home reading goal. Each student will share his or
her goals with family members. Children can read self-selected materials such as
books, magazines, websites, and news publications. Reading material can come
from home, school or the public library. The idea is for students to develop a
home reading life while trying to reach their year-long goal of 40+ books and/or
research projects.

● Math Projects:
Mr. Bertrams will be sending home math activities and projects at a later date in
September after reviewing the process in class with students.

● Any changes in the homework schedule due to holidays, weather events or

testing will be communicated via email.

What is the purpose of homework?

● Homework provides time for your child to practice the reading and math skills
developed in 4th grade. We want students to develop an independent reading
life and enjoy reading and math. Homework is also an opportunity for your child
to develop personal independence when it comes to filling out and returning the
monthly reading calendar and math activities.

Homework is NOT meant to cause family conflicts or challenges.

Homework SHOULD NOT be a battle.

● If your child finds has trouble finding reading materials or selects materials that
are not at his/her level, please email Mrs. Smith so she can work with your
student. Contact Mrs. Smith via email: smith_andrea@dublinschools .net.
What if my child argues about Home Reading or Math? What if my child procrastinates
and complains about homework?

● If your child challenges you about doing homework, do not make this a home conflict. Your
time with your child is limited and we want evenings to be positive. To be honest, your child’s
homework is just that: your child’s homework. It is not your homework and it is not a judgment
of your parenting skills.

● If your child challenges you over homework, contact us so we can address the situation.
Homework is an expectation between a student and the teacher. When kids do not complete
the work by choice, not because the work was difficult, we let kids complete the work during
recess. Remember: Your child is learning to be responsible and independent. Successes and
mistakes present learning opportunities. The consequences of incomplete assignments
should be received by your child, not you, so please do not make your family times in the
evening challenging with homework.

● Please do not make a special trip to school to drop off homework that was left at home. We will
be happy to help sort out this situation with your child. If your child forgets his/her homework at
home, we will work through it with your child.

Trust the process...it really works.

You can help with homework in the following ways:

● Work out a location that allows your child to focus. The fewer distractions, the more efficient
homework time can be.

● Set a reasonable time for completion. Reading for 15-30 minute sessions is age-appropriate.
Students independently read for at least 30 minutes each day during Reading Workshop.
Time for math work should take from 15-30 minutes.

● Schedule times to complete homework based on your family’s daily and weekly after-school
commitments. Make your child part of that planning so planned homework times are an
understood agreement.

● Ask your child about his/her reading selections and math projects. Use this time to discuss
what he/she is learning in Reading and Math Workshops.

● Develop a system for completed assignments. Students will be issued a Home Folder to be
kept in their backpacks for returned work and school messages. Help your child develop an
independent way of staying organized with homework materials.
