INTRODUCTION

Environmental education is the process of educating someone or individuals with

relevance to environmental issues to attain solution to solve the issues, to obtain a sufficient

skills and knowledge to acquire an optimistic attitude and increase motivation towards

combatting environmental illiterateness. Essentially, back around the year of 1968, Charles

first introduced the concept of environmental literacy as the level of a persons’ awareness and

knowledge concerning about environment. It is the understanding of an individual, wide-range

skills and motivation to make responsible act, decisions and interactions between natural

systems and human- social system. In addition, environmental literacy seeks to alter how

human behave so that humanity can create a sustainable and environmentally friendly quality

of life.

Innovative education and public awareness related to energy consumption, water

consumption and solid waste management will be a great help for everyday living of an

individual in the community. Since the most vital way of dealing environmental threats is to

educate people, then there is a serious call and need for every individual to gain appropriate

knowledge, raise further the consciousness and take more actions about the complex

environmental issue of the community.

Community is defined as a group of people in a specific place that shares common

beliefs, traditions and norms. According to Diaz, 2001, community is a concept with messy

history it emerges in classical sociology as a product of ideological conflict between tradition

and modernity. In the context of created by democratic political revolution of France and North

America and the process of industrialization, the concept of community was away of praising

the past in order to blame the present. Rather than objective, analytic concept, what community

is become a normative concept.

This aims to assess the knowledge of NL-1 students in using energy and water in

efficient practices, as well as to the solid waste management. This is to guide and to educate

the students to proper way on practices for easier and efficiently like for instance, explaining

energy literacy making the optimal choice when considering an investment in more-efficient

equipment.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study sought to answer the following questions:

1. Do the NL – 1 students practice conserving in terms of:

a. Energy

b. Water

c. Solid waste management

OBJECTIVES

(a) It should be creating awareness of the people about the environmental problems; (b)

Developing one’s attitude and sense of concern for the environment; (c) To provide basic

knowledge about the environment and its allied problems; (d) Motivating and advocating the

public to participate in protecting and improving the environment; (e) Attaining a wide-range

skills to help the concerned citizens in identifying and solving the environmental problems; (f)

Striving to achieve harmony and a stewardship with nature

DATA ANALYSIS

1. In energy consumption all of respondents practice unplugging of the electrical cord

when the appliance is not use and uses appliances for proper time.

2. Supporting to the result, According to Cornhusker Public Power District estimated

hours used in laptop is 75, Electric Fan is 150, washing machine 17, and television

183 per month.

3. In water consumption, most of respondents practice using of glass of water in

brushing teeth, and most of respondents did not use enough water in the basin in

washing clothes

4. In solid waste management all of the respondents practice 3Rs

Chapter III

Research Methodology

This chapter discusses the research design, the selection of participants as well as the

instrumentation and validation, sources of data, population of the study, data gathering

procedure, sampling method and statistical statement.

Research Design

This study employed the descriptive research method. According to Aquino, descriptive

research is fact-finding with adequate interpretation. It is something more and beyond

interpretation. The descriptive method will be used to describe the Assessment to the NL-1

Student’s Literacy Concerning the Environmental Issues of the Community.

Source of Data

The source of data gathered after the respondents answered the questionnaires that will

be distributed by the researchers to the NL-1 students.

Population of the Study

The subjects of this research are the NL- 1 College students enrolled in the School Year

2019-2020 of Philippine Normal University- North Luzon, Aurora, Alicia, Isabela. Total

enumeration will be used in this study. The researcher will be use Sampling Method specially

the Random Sampling.

The respondents is determinined by using Solvin’s formula. It composed as

𝑁
n = 1+𝑁𝑒 2 whereas:

n= no. of samples
N= total population

e= error margin / margin of error = 0.5

Research Instrumentation and Validation

The researchers used an adopted questionnaire by (Lyle, 2017) based on the Assessment

to the NL-1 Student’s Literacy Concerning the Environmental Issues of the Community. The

first part is the profile of the respondents and the second part consist of perception about

environmental issues.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers secured a written permission to conduct the study. After getting the

approval, the researcher requested permission to float the questionnaire to the NL-1 Students.

The respondents assured that the result of their tests is highly confidential, and the respondents

is informed by the results. The tests is assessed and evaluated and then specific statistical

treatment will be made according to the purpose of this study that determined the Student’s

Literacy Concerning the Environmental Issues of the Community of the Philippine Normal

University- North Luzon Campus.

RECOMMENDATIONS

1. Use smarter bulb. If you haven’t switch to LED, now is the time to save energy because

it last longer that will lead to saving of utility and care for the environment.

2. Conduct a simple symposium in our local barangays for advocating energy

consumption must be regulated and lessen of unnecessary load of connection that must

be done through simple efforts in physical exertion.

3. Turning of lights or any appliances when you are not using it. You can also use energy

in intensive appliances less by performing household chores manually.

4. The use of 3R’s is must perform all the time.

5. Use garbage segregation that is to be sold in junk shops to gain money.

PROPOSALS

Since our respondents are from the OBTEC NL1 class, we thought of proposing a project

where we would organize the following :

• Seminars on conserving water, electricity, and proper waste management.

• Putting sand, or soil in used bottles to build study, student areas, areas for leisure

• Educating students to conserve water by using excess water used in washing dishes, clothes

in using them as to water the plants, washing the vehicles.

• Tree planting

• Declaration of November as the environmental awareness month every year.
