B - TECHNICAL FEATURES OF AERIAL DEVICE

1. DESIGN

GIMAEX 540 TBI WM+OS SERIES aerial fire fighting and rescue hydraulic platform is a
Heavy Duty Double-Telescopic and Articulated Aerial Device with :

- 5 section-telescopic main boom

- 2 section telescopic articulated boom rotating around the main boom through 180° angle

Road position of booms provides that cage is stored behind the cab and just in front of the foremost
rear axle for rapid access to the control station in this cage.

Boom storage in road position provides also the most reduced front and rear overhangs for the
best driving capabilities.

GIMAEX 5+2 SIDE MOUNTED specific design of articulated boom provides reduced overall
height in road position and the lowest center of gravity for the best driving performance when
turning in acceleration.

2. MECHANICAL STRUCTURE

GIMAEX 540 TBI WM+OS SERIES aerial fire fighting and rescue hydraulic platform of heavy duty
Aerial Device series consists in:

A.SUBFRAME

Subframe consists of 2 main girders and cross-girders in folded steel sheet of rectangular
cross-section and arcwelding-assembled.

Page | 4
540 TBI : AERIAL FIRE FIGHTING AND RESCUE HYDRAULIC PLATFORM

Subframe is secured to the vehicle chassis by claps, tie-rods and bolts according to vehicle
manufacturer technical specifications.

Subframe is engineered to absorb all torsion and deflect stresses due to aerial device upper
structure.

Subframe is CAD-designed specially to bear :

- 4 outriggers beams
- 1 turntable to hold and to rotate the turret
- 1 hydraulic tank
- 1 platform in ribbed aluminium sheet equipped with access steps and handles
- side storage lockers with aluminium rolling shutters and internal lighting
- water/foam equipment including tanks, pumps and controls

B.STABILIZING SYSTEM

. "H" type outriggers

- 4 outrigger beams each built of 2 box sections in folded and welded sheet, sliding
freely and operated by hydraulic cylinders enclosed in beam for full protection
- 4 vertical jacks operated by hydraulic cylinders enclosed in beam for full protection

. Unique design with oversized vertical extension to provide automatic slope and
side tipping operation up to 5°

. Swivelling base plate at the end of each jack provides ground adaptability

. 2 twin control panels located right and left at the rear of the truck with independent
operation of each jack for easy positioning in congested aeras.

. One –side jacking mode to provide full outreach on 190° rotation when operating along
side obstacles or walls in reduced stabilisation width.

. Twin rear axles blocking by 2 hydraulic cylinders combined with 2 HD chains with
automatic safety control of rear axles in upper position

C.TURRET

Turret is a weld assembling steel structure integral with the rotating turntable.

Turntable is mounted on subframe through double ball ring bearings and powered by an
hydraulic motor with planetary reduction gear and failsafe disc brake.

Turret left side platform is equipped with operator seat and control station.

D.BOOMS

Main boom is a telescopic 5 secton-unit, 1st of which is fixed to the turret.

Elevation angle is 0° to 85 °

Articulated boom is of GIMAEX 1+1 SIDE MOUNTED design.

It is articulated on 180° angle around maim boom .

Page | 5
540 TBI : AERIAL FIRE FIGHTING AND RESCUE HYDRAULIC PLATFORM

GIMAEX 1+1 Telescopic Articulated Boom design provides high capabilities in rescue and
up and over rescue capability of 4 men and maximum outreach up to 12.00 m with cage
safe working load of 400 kg.

Maximum outreach up to 21.00 m with cage safe working load of 400 kg.

Negative access is – 9.0 m with 400 kg due to same telescopic design

Booms are of plasma-welded construction and made of HSLE steel

Telescopic sections slide on erthalite anti-friction pads of high resistance .

Telescoping design of 1 single double-acting hydraulic cylinder with double chains
arrangement for synchronized extension/retraction to optimise boom gravity centre
motion.

Independently controlled articulated boom rotates around head of main boom and is actuated
by 1 double-acting hydraulic cylinder.

E.RESCUE CAGE

GIMAEX APOLLO rescue cage made of aluminium on a steel frame, is designed to easily
rescue 4 men for a safe working load of 400 kg.

Dimensions of 1.9 m x 1.0 m x 1.1 m provides the largest operation surface for fire fighting
and rescue operations.

Self Levelling System with Level Safety Device is fully automatic without any interfacing
mechanical system such as levelling chains, ropes or tie rods requiring frequent inspection
and maintenance.

Self Levelling System consists in a positive hydraulic actuator directly mounted between
the tip boom head and the cage support .

System is driven by an independent pump and hydraulic circuit .

System is secured by an adjustable electronic level sensor combined with a safety

system that cuts the platform motion if inclination of the cage would for any reason exceed
10° .

Key controlled override allows for temporary exclusion of the automatic levelling system in
cases where repositioning of the cage or setting of its position in other than horizontal
position is required for specific use.

Automatic levelling is immediately and automatically re-established after abandoning the

key control.

Driving by auxiliary independent hydraulic pump driven by truck PTO , in order to provide
unbalanced stability and invariant pressure and flow due to simultaneous motions of
the booms.

Hydraulic rotating device allows +/- 45 ° cage rotation in both direction for building
alignment and optimal position of water/foam monitor and easy step-in/step-out.

Control station same as turret control station is installed at left front side of cage providing
quick access from body platform and best operator position.

Page | 6
540 TBI : AERIAL FIRE FIGHTING AND RESCUE HYDRAULIC PLATFORM

Cage is equipped with : high-safety rails, foot-stop strips, front access folding catwalk for
additionnal rescue facility and rear side access by sliding gate for direct access from body

Cage is equipped with collision US sensors all around cage surfaces to prevent the cage
from impact during operation in smoky environment and emergency.

Cage right front side is equipped with attachments for water monitor.
