Table 14. Garbage Collection Statistics

Performance Indicator 2015 2016 2017
Volume of Garbage Collected 873, 843 cu. m. 766, 329 cu. m. 691,803 cu. m.
Diversion Rate 49.93% 60.91% 69.30%
Source: Department of Environmental Services (DES)

The volume of garbage collected showed a decreasing trend for the period of
2015 to 2017. The highest decrease however was recorded in 2016 at 12.3%.

In 2017, the 69.30% diversion rate was the highest rate recorded by the city for the period
of 2015 to 2017. This could be the result of the efficient implementation of “Batang Bantay
Basura”, “Baratilyo ng Basura sa Barangay”, “Tatlong "B" sa Pasko”, and “Makati City
Hall Recyclables Fair.”

Through Urban Greening Initiatives, the City Government has been always supportive in
protecting the environment, however the number of parks from 2015 to 2017, consistently
remained at 14. Although the number of trees showed an increasing trend for the said
period, the tree population ratio at 1:6 is still below the standard ratio of 1:4.

Section 32 of RA 9003 requires the establishment of a Material Recovery Facility (MRF)

in every barangay or cluster of barangays. The City Government regularly implement the
collection of solid wastes and support completely the 3R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. A
total of 24 barangays has MRF out of 33 barangays in the City or 72.73%.
