Just like you

One of Kamala Harris’s strategies in her campaigning is using the “plain folks”

technique. She always tries to make herself seem like just another citizen like you or me. An

example of this is when she posts on both her instagram and twitter about how she started out

campaigning. In a short video, Harris describes herself standing in front of supermarkets with

nothing but an ironing board, some duct tape, and a few posters, talking to each and every person

she sees. By telling this story, Harris is making herself relatable because most people in the U.S

didn’t grow up with a ton of money and things handed to them, they had to work for them and

Harris is showing that she had to as well. This method is extremely effective because it makes

people see themselves in her and want her to succeed because they know that she worked for it.

Additionally on twitter, Harris tweets a lot using the word “we”. She tweets “in our darkest

moments, we fight for the best of who we are” finished by the words “fight we will”. This makes

voters feel united around her and feel like she supports them and wants to include them in the

process. Harris uses plain folks to make voters feel more connected to her which is a very

effective strategy and her use of social media is a perfect example of it.
