SCIENCE 604: GENETICS AND EVOLUTION

Problem Set 1: Mendelian Genetics

Directions: Read each problem carefully. In a yellow pad paper, show your complete solution and box your final answer.
Please write legibly and neatly.

1. In garden peas, yellow seed color is determined by the dominant allele G and green by the recessive allele g.
Diagram a cross between a pea plant homozygous for yellow seeds with one that produces green seeds. Do this for
the F1 and F2 generations. Use punnet square and give the possible phenotypes, genotypes, genotypic and
phenotypic ratio. (5points)

2. When Mendel did this cross, from a total of 8,023 F2 seeds obtained, he classified 6,022 yellow seeds and 2,001
green seeds. Compare the expected results calculated in (1) with Mendel’s results using a chart with the headings
phenotypes, observed (Mendel’s results), calculated, and deviations. (10 points)

3. The checkered pattern of pigeons is controlled by a dominant gene P; plain color is determined by the recessive
allele p. Red color is controlled by a dominant allele R, and brown color by the recessive allele r. Use fork-line
method to show the results of genotypic and phenotypic ratio of F1 and F2 generation. (15 points)

4. Flower position, stem length, and seed shape are three characters that Mendel studies. Each is controlled by an
independently assorting gene and has dominant and recessive expression as follows:
Character Dominant Recessive
Flower position Axial (A) Terminal (a)
Stem length Tall (T) Dwarf (t)
Seed shape Round (R) Wrinkled (r)

If a plant that is heterozygous for all three characters is allowed to self-fertilize, what proportion of the offspring
would you expect to be as follows? Use the rules of probability instead of Punnett square and Fork-line method (20
points)
a) Homozygous for the three dominant traits
b) Homozygous for the three recessive traits
c) Heterozygous for all three characters
d) Homozygous for axial and tall, heterozygous for seed shape
