Field Validation of Clutch

1.0 Purpose:

The purpose of this work instruction is to provide guideline for field validation of clutch
disc, cover assembly, RBA etc.

2.0 Scope:

This WI is applicable for field validation testing of newly developed clutch / modification in
existing clutch (DPA / CA / RBA) developed for commercial vehicles and farm tractors.

3.0 Terms and Definitions:

3.1 Validation:

Validation is the process of evaluating/testing the product during the development stage
to determine whether it satisfies the customer requirements for clutch performance.

3.2 Field Validation / Testing:

Field validation is required to ensure that designed clutch meets required product life at
actual working conditions of vehicle.

3.3 OEM: Original Equipment Manufacturer


3.4 IAM: Independent after Market
3.5 SPD: Spare Part Division
3.6 RBA: Release Bearing Assembly

4.0 Responsibility:

4.1 HOD - R&D is responsible to define criteria for field testing, analyse the failures observed
in field and take appropriate actions on problems observed during field validation of clutch.
4.2 HOD – Customer Service is responsible for arranging field testing, monitor the test status
and communicate issues observed.

5.0 Process Steps:

1 During NPD design review phase, based on risk associated to product, a HOD –
decision on field validation testing is taken as per market segment of clutch R&D
(OE/IAM/SPD/Export).
2 During sample preparation to submit customer, additional samples for field HOD –
testing are prepared. R&D
Quantity of samples to be tested in field is decided based on availability of
vehicle/agreed with CEO. Approx. 15 samples are considered for field
validation testing.
3 In-house rig validation of clutch is completed before field validation testing. HOD –
R&D
4 Intimation for field validation is given to Service team well in advance with HOD -
all the required details like customer, vehicle type, no. of kilometres of R&D
running, monitoring frequency, requirements of clutch peripherals etc.

These details are provided in QF/R&D/74 – Field Validation Test Request.

5 When the field validation is required for Export requirement, consultation HOD –
with Marketing team and SAUL team is done. R&D
6 Service Team monitors the performance of clutch fitted on vehicle at HOD –
defined frequency and shares to R&D for reference. Customer

7 When any problem is observed during field testing, immediate information HOD –
is shared to R&D. Root cause analysis of problem is done and actions are Customer
initiated by CFT. Service /
Field validation testing is done again after improvement. HOD –
R&D
8 When vehicle is not available for field testing, the matter is reviewed with HOD -
customer and necessary actions are decided. R&D
9 The flexibility to do or avoid the field testing is based on HOD –
product/market/segment/size/design. R&D in consultation with CEO takes R&D
decision on field testing based on conditions.
