DCN Case Study 2

Problem:
By today’s date, only Cardio Vascular disease has claimed the lives of 20 Million
people that’s a huge number. Most of these deaths happen because the patient
can take longer to realize what is happening and by the time others know what’s
happening it’s too late. These deaths can be prevented if the patient can get
care or medical treatment in time.
In most of these cases, death occurs because the victim could not be medically
treated in time. By the time people find the patient its either too late or they do
not know the first aid that should be given to the patient. Even first responders
can take time to reach the patient that time period is critical for any patient. If
the right steps are taken during those minutes the life of the patient could be
saved.

Solution:
The solution to this problem can be a Fitness Band. Fitness bands are usually
used to track one’s step activity exercise time and other activities. We could use
these bands to keep one’s blood pressure and his/her physical state in check.
These bands would be kept in connectivity to Mobile that could send the
information or they themselves could forward this information to the others.
These bands would alert the Emergency responders and their emergency
contacts so they could know if they need attention right away. On mobile, this
would not only help to broadcast the emergency signal to others but would also
help the people like the immediate family to take the first steps to do that would
help the patient. If a person removes the band intentionally, they would be
prompted to wear the band Immediately.
Graphical instructions would be displayed on the mobile so the family or the
people near the patient could follow the steps easily. For example, in the case
of a heart attack if the patient is unconscious CPR should be given right away.
The mobile could connect the family to First responders directly and display the
instructions for a CPR on the screen so it can be done correctly.
Implementation:
For these fitness bands to work they would either be connected to the Mobile,
the carries such as Airtel, Vodafone, Idea etc. directly or they could be connected
to the local connection such as home Wi-fi.

 When connected to mobile devices these would be connected via

Bluetooth that would help relay the info from mobile to others ASAP.
 When connected to the carrier directly they would have direct
connectivity access to carrier’s data network so they could send or receive
information on their own.
 In case it is connected to a home network such as Wi-Fi it could
communicate to other devices connected on the same Wi-Fi network. All
those devices would receive the distress signal and would inform the first
responders through internet access on the Wi-Fi connection.
These bands would have cardiac sensors that could detect unusual heartbeats.
These band could also be equipped with an accelerometer that could detect an
hard fall in case of an accident or a person tripping so that it could inform others
ASAP.

Probable problems:
This band is really internet/cloud dependent as it could not store much
information on itself so it is dependent on mobile or other data providers if there
is poor or no connectivity this could not communicate to anyone and hence
could not send any type of distress signal to anyone.
The cardiac sensors on such a small scale are not easy to make so this could raise
the cost of these bands. Battery capacity of these bands would be not much due
to their small size so if once could not charge the band in time and the battery
is depleted it would not be able to anything.
