On the 19th of October 2007, a now defunct local newspaper spread rumours on the GOD Alone/Quran
Alone community (hereinafter referred to as QA) community living in the Republic of Mauritius and since
then, the GOD Alone/Quran Alone community is facing character assassination.

The QA community, which at first was known as "Quraniyoon" in the Modern Standard Arabic word, has
been mockingly labeled with the derogative term "Shaytaniyoon", and wrongfully accused of rejecting
and insulting Prophet, despite the fact that the Quran itself states that the Prophet himself delivered and
followed Quran Alone.

Despite claiming that social media such as Facebook should be avoided because it encourages
immorality, religious clerics readily abused these platforms to issue fatawas not to do any business
transactions with them and as a result were victims of social boycotts. QA community has been
intimidated so many times in the public and received death threats be it orally or in written form.

Moreover, they write posts that slander QA, inciting abusive comments from all sorts of Facebookers.

People interfered in their private lives, obliging the QA parents to sever ties with them and constraining
the QA in-laws to have their daughters divorced from the QA husbands. QA community has not been
spared in Friday sermons dedicated exclusively to one-sided accusations.

Last month a group of religious zealots had an encounter with an active QA, a man aged above 30 years
old, they even sent the latter a letter threatening his life. A video of them encircling and forcing the man

On Wednesday the 27th of February, in the early morning the man and his wife were both awakened by
a loud explosion and were astonished to find out that the curtain in their living room was on fire. As
caring parents, their first action was to secure their 5 year old daughter. The occupiers of the house have
been successful in controlling the fire with a garden hose and water pales. It is then that they found out
remains of a bottle and a rag and came to the conclusion that one or perhaps several Molotov cocktail(s)
was/were thrown at their place. Such action could have resulted in asphixy then death by burning.

Fortunately, there have been no injuries but the sad part of it is that their 5 year old girl has been
traumatised maybe for life since then.

The question that law-abiding citizens of the Republic of Mauritius are asking is: - What is the 5 year old
girl’s guilt and what if she were burnt alive during the explosion?
And anyway what is the wrong of people following Quran Alone? Does not the Quran itself proclaim
freedom of belief?

If them being Sunnis mean to kill every one who is not Sunni, will they then kill the countless number of
Christians, Hindus and other non-Sunnis?

We sincerely hope that the arsonist/s be arrested and put behind bars for the safety of society and that
the fundamental rights of QA community be respected and this minority community be protected
henceforth.
