Design biogas power System for home
What is biogas system?
A biogas system is a technology that produces biogas. Biogas is a type of renewable energy
formed by the anaerobic digestion of organic matter. Anaerobic digestion refers to bacteria-aided
decomposition that occurs in an oxygen-free environment.

1. Determine power consumption demands.

• The first step in designing a wind power system is to find out the total power and
energy consumption of all loads that need to be supplied by the wind power system.

Required output power = 3149 W

= 3.149kW

Power consumption demand = 3149W

2. Calculate total Watt-hours per day for each appliance used.

• Add the Watt-hours needed for all appliances together to get the total Watt-hours
per day which must be delivered to the appliances.

Total appliance use = 19 KWh/day

3. BIO-FUELS - METHANE FROM ANIMAL WASTE

Methane is a gas that can be collected and burned as a fuel. This gas is produced by animal
waste, as it decays. Some farms collect animal waste and store it in tanks, processing the
collected gas. The resulting methane gas is then compressed in tanks/containers and
distributed to customers. It can be used to heat cookers, houses and even to power car
engines
1. The cycle starts with animals on a farm, grazing and producing waste.
2. The waste is collected on a regular basic. It is transferred to decomposing tanks and the
methane gas is collected and stored.
3. Gases are stored in tanks

Table III Biogas Composition by % Volume

WASTE STOCK CARBONDIOXIDE HYDROGEN CARBON METHANE
SULPHIDE MONOXIDE
Cow dung 27.2 0.1 4.7 67.9
Cowpea 33.2 0.5 10.1 56.2
Cassava peeling 32.2 3.1 13.3 51.4

4. Energy calculation of biogas plant

Formula to calculate total gas production for cattle max gas production /kg
= 0.05 m3 Total gas
= Total dung in kg x 0.05
Calculation for 10 animals each producing 8 kg dung if we are successful to collect that all
Total = 8x10 = 80kg
Volume of total gas = 0.05x80 = 4 m3 (1m3 =19 Mega joules)
Total gas = 5.2x19 = 76MJ
To convert it to KWh = 76/3.6 = 21KWh

5. Conversion to electrical energy

Note: when we convert it to electrical energy 65% of energy lost as Heat & other
mechanical losses as utilized by electrical generator.

21*35/100 = 7.35 kWh is available as electrical energy from 104 kg of Cow dung. In order
to produce 19 KWh I will have to utilize the dung of 30 animals approximately.
