Abstract
This research highlights the relationship between self-esteem and academic achievement in the
pre-university students. Additionally, it aimed to identify whether there are differences in
academic achievement between boys and girls. The objectives of this study were achieved by using
the Coopersmith questionnaire and the students’ grade in their current and previous semesters. The
random sampling was used for collecting the data and as a consequence 50 male and 50 female
were chosen randomly. The questionnaires were distributed amongst 100 students in Qaemshahr
schools. The results demonstrated that there was significant (p<0.01) positive relationship between
self-esteem and academic achievement. Moreover, there was significant difference in academic
achievement between boys and girls. However, no significant difference was found in self-esteem
between males and females. The results suggest that high self-esteem is important factor and
strengthen the prediction of academic achievement in students.

ABSTRACT
This study aimed to explore the relationship between self-esteem and pupils' academic
achievement. The researcher put forward the following main question to investigate the research:
what is the relationship between self-esteem and pupils' achievement? To answer this question, the
researcher proposed three sub-questions so as to examine of the level of existed self-esteem within
pupils and the factors affecting it directly and indirectly, to scrutinize the strategies applied by
teachers to enhance pupils' self-esteem, and to finally combine the results of investigation in order
to answer the main question of the study. The study population was pupils of grade six in three
private schools in Jerusalem (N= 83 / 50 males and 33 females) and all their teachers (N=6/ 2 male
and 4 females). The sample of the study was purposeful, 18 pupils (11 males and 7 females); six
high self-esteem and low self-esteem were selected according to the results of the attitude scale,
and six teachers from the population of the mentioned school were chosen sincethey offered to
participate in the study. The instruments for collecting data were an attitude questionnaire (self-
esteem scale) to measure pupils' self-esteem, in addition to interviews and classroom observations.
The results of this study indicated positive relationship between self-esteem and academic
engagement and social interaction, while they revealed weak correlation between self esteem and
academic achievement. Further studies were recommended on the gender issue related to self-
esteem, in addition to a comparative study of self-esteem between local and private schools in
Jerusalem.

Abstract
This master’s project contains information about the relationship between self-esteem and
academic achievement and/or performance along with suggestions for student interventions and
treatments. Included are the definitions of both self-esteem and academic achievement along with
the importance of studying their relationship, what constitutes the relationship, the methodology
used in the studies, the clinical/school implications and future research regarding these two
variables. About half of the research observed that academic achievement has an effect on self-
esteem. Other research found that self-esteem has an effect on academic achievement. Still other
studies found that its relationship has no direction. When the studies observed students of different
cultures, ages, and races, many theories on self-esteem and academic achievement were found to
be questionable due to outside factors and the ambivalence of the definitions of the variables.
School counselling interventions in improving both self-esteem and academic achievement are
also noted as conditions in building an effective comprehensive guidance curriculum for students.
Future research between these two variables is necessary especially for school counsellors to help
identify whether providing self-esteem building services will improve academic achievement.

An examination of social and psychological influences on academic learning: a focus on
self-esteem, social relationships, and personal interest

Phan, Huy & Ngu, Bing. (2017).

Abstract
The present study focused on an examination of both global and domain-specific self-esteems in
secondary mathematics learning. The extent to which self-esteem, in general, would account and
explain educational success through social relationships with teachers and peers, and personal
interest in learning tasks is the main inquiry of this correlational investigation. Two hundred and
eighty-three year 10 students (128 girls, 155 boys) were asked to respond to a number of Likert-
scale inventories. Causal modeling procedures, aided by the statistical software MPlus 7.3, were
used to analyze the data and to test the hypothesized model. A series of a posteriori analyses
yielded a modified model for discussion, producing a number of key findings, namely: (a) the
differential influences of both global (e.g., →relationship with teachers) and domain-specific (e.g.,
→relationship with peers) self-esteems, (b) the positive influences of social relation with teachers
(e.g., →exam result) and interest in learning tasks (e.g., →end-of-school term grade), and (c) the
mediating functioning of relationship with peers and interest in learning tasks. This evidence,
overall, provides additional theoretical insights into the operational nature and trajectories of
effective learning.

ABSTRACT
There was a general agreement among several researchers that there is a strong relationship
between self-esteem and academic achievement, but there are considerable disagreements
among them as to the nature of the relationship. The researchers in this study sought to find out
if there was a relationship between self esteem and academic performance among secondary
school students in Ruiru constituency, Kiambu County. Furthermore, the study aimed to
investigate the levels of self esteem among secondary school students and determine if there
are gender differences in those levels. To achieve this, descriptive survey research design was
used to study the variables. Participants for the study were 160 in total from 6 secondary
schools, to be precise, 80 male students and 80 female students. Nassiuma (2000) formula was
applied to calculate the required number of secondary schools. Selection of the respondents
was by stratified random sampling to come up with school types as strata, then simple random
sampling in each stratum to select schools and students. Rosenberg self esteem scale measured
the student’s levels of self esteem, while data on academic performance was collected from the
various sampled schools‟ official records which were provided by the class teachers. Analysis
of results was by use of SPSS to determine mean, mode, percentages, graphs and Pearson’s
correlation coefficient. The results of the study were that, secondary school students in Ruiru
Constituency had high levels of self esteem, with slight differences in gender. Self esteem
mean was 18 out of 30. Males students had slightly higher self esteem compared to females
students. Also, there was a very weak relationship between self esteem and academic
performance (p>0.030).However, for future studies, researchers recommend that a larger
sample size be used. There is also a need to investigate levels of self esteem for students in other
secondary schools in Kenya.

Abstract
The study was aimed to analyze whether or not the self-esteem of students had any effect on their
academic achievement, to correlate self-esteem and the academic outcome of undergraduate
students at the University of Swat. A hypothesis was formulated that students with higher self-
esteem level will have higher academic outcome. A total sample of 600 participants was selected
randomly from various departments at the University of Swat. Out of the 600 participants, 360
were male and 240 were female participants having qualified at least four semesters. Rosenberg
Self-esteem Scale (RSES) was used to assess the self-esteem level of participants. The students
were also asked to mention their Cumulative Grade Point Averages (CGPA) from their previous
semesters at the end of the RSES questionnaire. The CGPA of participants was correlated with
their score on the RSES scale by applying the Pearson Correlation Coefficient test using the
Statistical Product and Service Solutions version 21 (SPSS v21). Results showed that there was in
fact a significant positive correlation (r=0.551, p<0.02) between students’ CGPAs and their score
on the self-esteem scale. It was concluded from the results that students with higher self-esteem
level had higher academic outcome.
