matches either to published sources or to other submitted applications. Misleading
and false information is viewed as a major breach of ethical behaviour. We refer
applicants to the Engineers Australia Code of Ethics, in particular the demonstration
of integrity, available here. Please also refer to Section C and Section D for further
details regarding plagiarism, fraudulent documents and ethical behaviour. The
sanctions regarding misleading applications include notification to the Department
of Home Affairs and up to 12 months ban from applying for a skills assessment
with Engineers Australia.
 Plagiarism: Career Episodes must be based on work conducted personally by you
and must be written entirely in your own words. Presenting work conducted by
others as your own and/or using other people’s words (templates, Career Episodes,
online sources etc.) is considered plagiarism and is a violation of Engineers
Australia’s code of ethics. This carries significant penalties including the rejection
of the application, imposition of a 12-month ban and/or reporting of your details to
the Department of Home Affairs for further investigation and action. Please Note: It
is not sufficient to merely describe work in which you were involved. Career
Episodes must be written in the first person singular clearly indicating your own
personal role in the work described. Remember, it is what I did, not what we did or
what ‘I was involved in’ and describe how you did it.

Warning

Having your Career Episodes written by another person or persons constitutes unethical
behaviour and will result in serious consequences including but not limited to:

1) Immediate rejection of the application along with the imposition of a 12-month ban

2) Mandatory reporting of the applicant’s details to the Department of Home Affairs

Engineers Australia is aware of various entities offering CDR writing services. Please be
advised that Engineers Australia does not, in any way, endorse or have any affiliation with
these entities and does not condone applicants engaging these services. Applicants are
required to complete their own applications and personally write their Career Episodes.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT REFERENCES

A common requirement for applicants for migration to Australia is the

presentation of employment references which support statements from the
applicant regarding employment history and skills obtained. Many of the
employment references provided by applicants are not acceptable for migration
purposes because they are illegible, unintelligible, not signed by an
authorised person or impossible to verify.

It is therefore essential that any employment references you present in support of

your application have the following characteristics:

The reference must be on the official letterhead of the company or government

department; the letterhead should indicate clearly the full address of the company
and any telephone, telex or facsimile numbers;

The name and position of the person authorised to sign the employment reference
should be typed or stamped below that person’s signature – a reference with an
illegible signature will not be accepted;

The contact telephone number of the person writing the reference should be
shown; The letter should state the exact period of employment and include clearly
stated details of – whether employment permanent or temporary, and full or part-
time. For any periods of part-time work, details must be given of the weekly hours
and of any variations in hours; descriptions of position/s held (positions should
not be described by generic titles (eg research officer, public servant) but according
to the nature of the duties undertaken (eg research chemist, accounts clerk), and of
at least the five main duties undertaken; annual salary being earned; also include
both an official Duty Statement for the position/s you have been working in plus
an organisation chart showing how your position/s fit into the structure of the
company; a recent payslip from your current employment should also be included.

Employment references which do not include sufficient information for the

assessing officer to reach a decision on an application will not be accepted. This
will cause significant delays in processing your application, as we will have to
write to you and advise that your application cannot proceed until we receive
acceptable employment references. If you fail to provide sufficient information
your application may be refused.
