SUMMARY STATEMENT (May be used as a referee statement)

Classroom Teacher/Mentor Robin Rabanus-Wallace

Student Name: Alana Retallack Learning Area: HPE

Professional Knowledge
Alana’s content knowledge is improving in both physical education and health education. She is
able to answer the majority of questions posed by students and gets back to students if she is
unsure of the answer. Her curriculum knowledge, understanding of strands is also solidifying as
she takes on different units of work and delivers more assignments. Alana has shown that she is
prepared to plan efficiently and effectively and put in the ‘behind the scenes’ work to deliver
lessons that are factual and informative.

Professional Practice
Alana presents herself and her lessons very professionally. She is always appropriately dressed,
early to classes, well set up and has all the necessary items for her lesson. Alana did a great job of
developing positive teacher student relationships for the 6 weeks she was at school and used these
positive relationships to achieve the best outcomes for the students. Alana is prompt with email
communications, and polite and friendly in face to face conversations. She used a variety of 21st
century teaching strategies to engage students throughout the units she delivered. Some of this
included group work, debates, activities, IT tasks, mind maps, thought provoking statements and the
like. Alana gave numerous forms of formative feedback to students including verbal feedback, peer
feedback, filming of specific physical skills and more. Alana marked and gave feedback for
summative work too for both physical and theory components of HPE.

Professional Engagement
Alana participated in all the staff, faculty, sub school and PD meetings that occurred during her
placement. She also was involved in parent teacher interviews as well as one on one professional
conversations with each other about her progress and lessons among other teacher related topics.

SUMMARY STATEMENT (May be used as a referee statement)

Classroom Teacher/Mentor Jetlynne Smart

Student Name: Alana Retallack Learning Area: HPE

Professional Knowledge
Alana has worked with a year 8 health class for several weeks. She has always been calm,
helpful and friendly in her engagement with students, as well as staff. She has developed
effective lesson content and been willing to research and design topics, which have been less
familiar. She has reflected on her own practice and begun to maximize a range of delivery skills.
Alana has made positive judgements about the timing, sequencing and presentation of course
content, and students have enjoyed her quietly confident manner.

Professional Practice
Alana has shown a strong desire to be prepared and organized. She has been proficient in her
planning and her attention to tasks and lesson content. She has continued to develop her teaching
strategies and delivery to facilitate effective student learning. While very well prepared, she has also
shown she can manage change and the need for flexibility, as required. She has been very
competent in her use of technology for lesson delivery, as well as maintaining a supportive
environment for small group discussions in health.
Professional Engagement
Alana has participated in a full range of activities expected of staff in a busy secondary school. She
has worked with a large variety of staff in many different settings. Her engagement with others is
always very polite and courteous, cooperative and helpful. She has engaged with members of the
community, assisted with running large school events and engaged in staff and learning area
meetings. Both students and staff have appreciated her contribution to our school community during
her stay at Glenunga.

SUMMARY STATEMENT (May be used as a referee statement)

Classroom Teacher/Mentor Alicia Haddrick

Student Name: Alana Retallack Learning Area: Science (Stage 1 Nutrition)

Professional Knowledge

Alana has good subject knowledge of Nutrition. She was able to put together informative visuals and
organise interactive activities based around multiple pedagogical approaches. She was able to reflect
on her weaknesses and strengths of her delivery effectively and implement changes or strategies to
make her lessons better next time around. Some work on timing of delivery is something to consider
moving into the future; this will come with experience though.

Professional Practice

Alana presented to class well prepared and was always working a week in advance with her
planning. We met and discussed her outline each week and modified where need be. She interacted
with the students well and formed positive relationships with her students. Her presence in the room
was great, walking around checking on how students were progressing with work and helping where
needed. Alana successfully assessed task collaboratively with me in which she designed and
assessed against the SACE performance standards.

Professional Engagement

Alana communicated professionally with myself in our weekly meetings to discuss her lesson
intentions and areas of improvements for the week. She was always willing to take on feedback to
move her practice forward.
