Transformer Oil
All high capacity transformers in use today have to cope with transformers and electrical apparatus results in greater
voltages in excess of 400kv. Therefore it becomes imperative electrical stress in insulating material and fluids. To handle
to maintain optimal insulation properties of the transformer these stresses, oils are required to have better dielectric

Function of Oil in Electrical Equipment Contaminants of Oil
• Used as cooling media • Solid particles like rust, scale, dust and fibers.

• Used as dielectric media • Generation of carbon particles due to ageing in switchgears

• To isolate winding from atmosphere • Oil absorbs moisture resulting in free and dissolved water.

• To quench the arc • Absorption of air.

• Absorption of gases.

• Sludge formation.

• Increase in acidity level.

Effects of Contaminants of Oil

Physical Chemical Electrical

• Increase in acidity • Low di - Electric strength
• Colour not clear, turbid, hazy
• Neutralization value • Low resistivity
• Low interfacial tension
• Increase in tan delta value.
• Decrease in flash point

• Change in density
