Common Issues in Cooling Water System
1. Scales
• Cooling water evaporation in
cooling tower.
• Dissolved Ca, Mg and other
salts are super-saturated and
will create Calcium Carbonate
(CaCo3) & Magnesium Silicate
(MgO3Si) or others.
• Create scales especially on
heating parts or corroded parts.

2. Slime
• Hydrocarbon and other can be
used as foods for
microorganisms.
• Microorganisms can grow
rapidly depending on conditions
of oxygen, carbon dioxide,
temperature and others.
• Microorganisms with dusts or
fine soils from air will create
slimes.

3. Corrosion
• Dissolved Oxygen, suspended
solids, acidity, alkalinity and
other conditions can make
corrosion to heat exchangers
and pipings.

Scale Arresting System(SAS)
Purposes
- Removing the dissolved scales from the
cooling water by using electrochemical
separation technology
- Minimizing the clogging issue on the heat
exchanger’s surface, the filler in the cooling
tower and pipings
Location to be installed
Cooling Water(CW) Supply line between addition
cooling tower and heat exchanges

Reaction Mechanism
Cathode (-)
2H2O + 2e- → H2 + 2OH-
HCO3- + OH- → CO32- + H2O
Ca2+ + CO32- → CaCO3 or
Ca(HCO3)2 → CaCO3 + CO2 + H2O
(CaCO3 scale removal)
Anode (+)
2H2O → 4H+ + O2 + 4e-
2Cl- → Cl2 + 2e-
Cl2 + H2O → HClO + HCl
(Sterilizing effect by HClO)

Expected Improvement after Installing SAS
3. Anti-Corrosion effect
Cooling water will be in weakly alkaline condition that prevents corrosion
