Every barangay in a certain municipality or town must have a Health and Sanitation
Program that would cater various seminars, talks, and health programs to all its constituents. This
program is very essential most especially to women and children. Brgy. Bagumbayan Sur in Naga
City, Camarines Sur has this kind of program.

We have conducted an interview wherein questions regarding Health and Sanitation

program were asked from the head of Brgy. Bagumbayan Sur’s medical team. The health and
sanitation program of Brgy. Bagumbayan Sur was established in year 1966. Ever since, the
barangay has offered various programs to help and guide the constituents on their health and
sanitation cases. The medical team of Brgy. Bagumbayan Sur had established numerous projects
since its foundation. Every year, the team provides a free immunization for children covering those
of chicken pox vaccine, measles vaccine, and dengue vaccine. This program is specifically
intended for the new born children. Every newborn in the barangay is highly welcome to get free
immunization in the health center. Another program is the Mothers’ class which is intended for
mothers wherein talks and seminars are held for awareness about the health of the children.
Discussed in this program are the causes and treatments of common diseases like diarrhea and flu.
In addition to the programs given to mothers is the Buntis’ Class. This class is provided by the
medical team in order for the pregnant women to maintain a healthy state during and after
conception. The team also offers free pre-natal and post-natal check-up. Moreover, Family Health
Class is also implemented in the barangay health center. This class provides a free counseling for
newly-wed couples planning to start a family. Finally, House-to-House Sanitation check-up is also
a program of the barangay wherein the medical team roams around the whole barangay to check
the comfort rooms of every constituent. If a family doesn’t have a bowl, the team would provide
them one.

In connection with diarrhea and dengue cases, the medical team of the barangay highly
encourages women to breastfeed their newborn children for it lessens the possibility of diarrhea
cases in children. Breastfeeding is also very healthy for the children rathen than formula milk. On
the other hand, the team conducts a monthly clean-up drive and search-and-destroy program to
hinder dengue cases in the barangay. In this way, the constituents would feel safe in their own
houses. Moreover, the citizens’ response to the adherence in proper waste disposal, sanitation and
vaccination is known to the medical team. Although the segregation is strictly implemented by the
barangay, the constituents still do not follow proper waste disposal. The garbage are still being
piled up in some places and garbage collectors segregate it. In immunization or vaccination,
citizens became scared to avail the free immunization offered by the team because of the
controversial “dengvaxia”. The team still finds it hard to convince parents to let their children be
vaccinated in the health center. Regarding the Reproductive Health, City and Population Nutrition
Office offers a program called Usapan Series wherein newly-wed couples are encouraged to
attend. The talk is centered on the family planning and how to handle situations after marriage.
Also, for pregnant women, a class about pre-natal and post-natal is conducted to assist them in
their conception. Although the barangay medical team’s programs are progressing, the team finds
it difficult to encourage everyone to attend the seminars and talks. The ones who avail more of
their programs are women. Some men are not participative when it comes to health and sanitation
awareness programs. That is why there will be major and minor improvements to be made to make
a better health and sanitation program for Brgy. Bagumbayan Sur. The team is determined to
continue to advocate on health and sanitation programs such as giving fliers and develop the
programs mentioned above for the continuous safety and progression of the barangay health center
as well as its constituents.

In every barangay, there must be a well-developed health and sanitation program because
health is one of the most essential parts of our daily lives. The government should invest more on
this health programs to promote healthy living among the citizens. As it is commonly said, health is
in indeed wealth and as such maintaining the programs and activities that aim for the progressiveness of
the health status of a certain community should always be uphold.
