2. Course description (max.150 words)
This course provides basic practical skills that are required needed to become an Electrical and
Electronics Engineer and it is mainly lab work based. Lab work developed in this course will help
then to cope with other courses in the program. This course also provides additional skills, such as
presentation and use of CAD. The course will provide students essential expertize of working with
electronic test equipment; constructing circuits; troubleshooting; basic error analysis; basic
principles of design and estimation skills. The course also includes scenario weeks where students
will have chance to integrate narrow expert view into wider practical problem. The module content
includes: Engineering design process, customer focus, creative concept generation, product
configuration, project implementation, design guidelines and implementation, laboratory skills for
circuit design (EDA tools, PCB prototyping, measurement, troubleshooting), design evaluation,
product configurations , project communication, engineering standards, maintenance.

3. Summative assessment methods (tick if applicable):

4. Course aims
1) Familiarize students with concepts, techniques, and tools that encourage creativity and
innovation in their future design practices.
2) Provide students with the knowledge and understanding of workshop and laboratory
practice.
3) Provide students with hands-on experience in electronics engineering design, measurement
and troubleshooting tools.
4) Introduce students to codes of practices and standards: customer specifications, Industrial

engineering specifications, engineering codes of practice, engineering standards.

5. Course learning outcomes (CLOs)

5.1 By the end of the course the student will be expected to be able to:
1) Acquire the basic knowledge in engineering design from concept to implementation.
2) Use a range of tools and apply techniques related to the assembly of electronic
circuits and systems, including: Printed circuit board assembly (component selection
and insertion), Soldering, Circuit prototyping techniques (e.g. wire-wrapping), Simple
metal working (drilling, bending, fastening).
3) Use a range of equipment to perform measurements and procedures of relevance to
analogue electronic engineering, including: Electronic component characterisation
and testing, DC characterization and testing of electronic circuits (dc voltage and
current measurements; input and output resistance; gain; power consumption).
4) An understanding of the requirements of engineering documentation including:
Customer specifications, Industrial engineering specifications, engineering codes of
practice, engineering standards.
5) Demonstrate proficiency in the handling of engineering information. This ranges
from interpreting engineering specifications, standards and drawings either in paper
or electronic format to preparing and ensuring the effectiveness of process instruction
sheets for operators.
