Ethical Contract for Students Participating in a Cooperative, Inquiry Classroom
Students—Please read, sign, and turn in this page during the second week laboratory class meets. Please print off and sign
another copy of this page to keep for your reference.

Learning in a cooperative environment with inquiry-based activities should be stimulating, demanding, and fair, but this approach is
different from the competitive classroom structure with traditional, verification-type activities. Therefore, it is important for us to be clear
about mutual expectations. Below is the code of conduct that is expected of students in this class. This code is intended to maximize
thinking, reflection, debate, and exchange of ideas in an atmosphere of mutual respect while preserving individual ownership of written
words. If you feel you do not understand or cannot agree to these expectations, there will be an opportunity to discuss this with your
instructor and classmates in the first laboratory class.

NOTICE OF PARTICIPATION IN A MANDATORY COURSE FIELD TRIP

I will work cooperatively with my classmates, both by listening and giving thought to others’ ideas, as well as contributing my
own ideas. I will do my share of the work as I expect others to do their share.
I understand that using one’s own words when writing promotes understanding and learning. I will regularly record my ideas
and questions in my own words during lab.
I understand that giving concise and accurate oral presentations is a useful skill to have. I will take advantage of the
opportunities in this class to develop that skill.
I expect to share data with my team members. With the exception of shared data, I will write assignments by myself, using my
own words. I will prepare my own graphs, figures, or charts and do my own interpretations, and will not represent others’ work
as my own, even during group projects or presentations.
I will abide by The University of Georgia’s Academic Honesty standards as outlined in A Culture of Honesty. It is my
responsibility to familiarize myself with the current UGA academic honesty policies as they apply to BIOL 1103L.
I hereby acknowledge my awareness that my participation in the BIOL 1103L field trip to test water quality may expose me to
risk of property damage and bodily or personal injury that may prove fatal. Examples of risks that I may be exposed to include:
traffic accidents, falls, drowning, insect bites, stings, snake bites, poison ivy, water-borne pathogens, etc., as well as other
risks that may not be foreseeable. I hereby assume any and all such risks.

I hereby certify that I have read and understand and agree to abide by the guidelines described in this Biology 1103 laboratory manual.
