LUBRICATION SYSTEM

The Need of Lubrication

System
 The lubrication system provides engine oil
between moving engine parts in order to
avoid engine failures caused by friction.
 Friction is resistance to motion between two
moving parts.
 If the contact surface between two parts is
dry  friction is higher  there will be more
heat build-up  engine parts will melt and
fuse together.
 That is when we call it a seized engine
Four Purposes of Oil
 Reduces friction
between moving parts
(lubricates):
 Cools internal engine
parts
 Cleans
 Seals microscopic
imperfections of metal
surfaces
Selecting the Correct Oil
 Engine manufactures specify
the required oil viscosity and
quality for their engines.
 Oil viscosity is rated by Society
of Automotive Engineers (SAE)
and oil quality is rated by
American Petroleum Institute
(API).
 Make sure you pick the
specified oil
Types of Lubrication System

There are two types of systems

Splash Lubrication
 Very simple and inexpensive; used on
small engines.
 It uses dippers or slingers to splash
oil around all engine parts.
 Dippers – used on horizontal
crank engines
 Slingers – used on vertical
crank engines
Pressure Lubrication
 It uses an oil pump to push
oil through oil galleries
(passages holes drilled
throughout the engine
block and components) to
all engine parts that need
lubrication
 The main components are
oil pan, oil pick-up tube &
strainer, oil pump, oil filter,
and oil galleries
Servicing Lubrication Systems
Oil MUST be checked and
changed regularly
 The additives wear out or neutralize
 The oil gets contaminated with:

 Dirt
 Combustion deposits (from blow-by)
 Fuel
 Acids
 Oil oxidizes and thickens with heat and time
Safety!!!
 If the engine has been running, make
sure not to burn yourself with hot
engine parts or hot engine oil
 Lift and support the vehicle properly –
don’t crawl under a vehicle which is not
supported on stands properly.
Checking oil level
 Engine must be
turned off and the oil
settled down
 Locate the dipstick,
pull it out, wipe it
clean and stick it
back in place
 Check the level and
condition of the oil
Draining the engine oil
 Locate the drain plug at
the bottom of the oil
pan and remove it by
unscrewing it and let
the oil drain in a
suitable container
 Remember! Try not to
burn yourself
 Once done, screw back
the plug – if necessary
replace the gasket
Remove the Oil Filter

Oil filter
Band Wrench
Installing a new filter

 Make sure the seal

from the old filter is
not sticking on the
engine
 Lubricate the seal on
the new oil filter
 Screw in and hand
tighten the new
filter
Filling up oil
 Select the correct grade
and viscosity oil
 Fill-up the appropriate
amount through the oil
filler cap.
 Both excessive and low oil
levels are harmful to the
engine
How soon do we change oil?

 Change oil and oil filter every 5000 Km

or three months

 Dispose off oil and filter properly

care of your future
