Laboratory Management

Ms. Jofimae Romero

1. Thoroughly explain the diagram

Our diagram shows a matrix structure diagram commonly known as a matrix

organizational chart. This diagram or type of structure reflects a company wherein employees are
divided into teams or product lead by 2 or more streamlines of command. In this case the task or
projects are led by 2 leaders and 1 general leader. First, is the medical director who devises
protocols and guidelines and the technicalities field of the clinical stuff and evaluates team
members in a healthcare organization and the Operation Manager who oversees high level HR
duties , analyzes and improve organizational processes and work to improve quality in letting
training standard, procedures and the functionality of the laboratory.

The diagram shows a flow of work wherein the Medical Director manages and supervise
the chemistry, hematology and microbiology section and performance of MedTechs in the
mentioned sections are reported to the Administrative Director. As for the Operation manager, he
evaluates the performance of team members working in the Core lab that handles reference lab
testing, specialty lab that handles gastroenterology, genetics, hepatology and rapid response lab
which is for emergency departments and labor or delivery room. The overall performance of the
lab are managed by the 2 leaders through conducting a general report to the higher general leader
which is the Administrative Director who is tasked in coordinating daily operational functions,
streamlining management systems, monitoring budgets, supervising managers, improving
business efficiency, requesting audits, and analyzing financial data.

2. Give at least 3 possible organizational goals of this type of structural model

 To manage large and complex projects.

Because matrix structures retain an organization's functional structure, they allow for
the rapid creation of efficient large-scale, project structures that employ many members
of the organization's functional structure but without disrupting or destroying the
structure in the process.

 To allow more collaboration, integrated and more dynamic organization.

Using the matrix structure as opposed to product departments may increase
communication and cooperation among departments, because project managers will need
to coordinate their actions with department managers. In fact, research shows that matrix
structure increases the frequency of informal and formal communication within the
organization (Joyce, 1986).

 To create a pool of valuable resources that can provide flexibility in resolving issues.
Matrix structures also have the benefit of providing quick responses to technical
problems and customer demands. The existence of a project manager keeps the focus on
the product or service that is being provided.

3. What would be the leadership style, member behaviors and organizational culture that
can be applied in this type of structural model?

Leadership style

- Collaborative, horizontally focused leadership approach that support organizational priorities as

well as the cross-functional nature of a matrix.

- Without authority across horizontal dimension means there is a shift in thinking and behavior

- Project manager should lead and persuade counterparts

- Stressing the importance of the project and benefits that it will bring when successfully
completed

Member Behaviors

1. Expect for more opportunities for role overload and conflict

Do not assume that having multiple bosses is necessarily a bad thing! Yes, there
are more opportunities for role overload and role conflict, but there are also more chances
of learning from several senior people. This may turn out to be a great learning
experience.

2. Make conflicts known to managers

Another challenge is the potential for role conflict. If the managers are not
coordinating with each other, they may place contradictory expectations on you. Also,
keep good records of all e-mails and CC all relevant managers in conversations that are
pertinent to them.

3. Establish an effective relation with each manager

When you have multiple bosses, you will need to manage good relations with
each of them. You need to understand the styles of each manager and vary your style
with each. Some may appreciate frequent updates on all you are doing, while others may
judge you based solely on ultimate results. Make an effort to understand their styles and
do not assume that something that works with one will work with the other.

4. Be cognizant of the relationships among those managers

Never complain about one to the other. Also, be aware that if two managers truly
dislike each other, being too friendly with one in the presence of the other may affect
your relations with the other.

Organizational Culture

Egalitarian Culture

- Information flows more freely creating fewer barriers to projects success

- Requires more loyalty to projects than people and not positions in the organization
