MULTIMEDIA IN MODERN WEB

MEDIA - is a medium of communication

MULTIMEDIA – is the field concerned with the computer controlled integration of text, graphics, drawing,
static and dynamic images, animation, audio, and any other media.

Brief History of Multimedia

EARLY FORMS OF WRITING – Cuneiform, Hieroglyphics, Baybayin

1455 – Printing Press (Gutenberg and Caxton, movable type printing).
1839 – We owe to John Herschel the discovery of the way to fix images by dipping them in a sodium
hyposulfite bath, which is still used today as the main component of photographic fix-baths.
1837 – Telegraph receiver and transmitter
1876 – Telephone
1879 – Granted a phonograph patent
1888 – Sequential photographs with sprockets manually pulled through a projector.
1948 – Shockley, Bardeen, and Brattain develop the transistor (more reliable and cheaper to run than vacuum
tubes).
1956 – CBS broadcast (first network broadcast using video tape).
1972 – Phillips laserdisc playback only deck; – PONG, first commercial video game.
1975 – SONY Betamax VCR with a one hour, inch video cassette tape.
1979 – Walkman: SONY introduces a portable audio cassette player.
1988 – 3D Graphics: 3D graphical supercomputers; – Pixar’s “Tin Toy”: the first computer-animated film to
win an academy award.

DEFINITION OF MULTIMEDIA

 Multimedia has been used in many aspects in our lives, for example, in the field of business,
entertainment, and the sciences.
 “Multimedia” comes from the words “multi” and “media”
o “Multi” means various
o “Media” refers to any hardware or software used for communicating

MULTIMEDIA ELEMENTS

DYNAMIC ELEMENTS
- Video
- Animation
- Audio
STATIC ELEMENTS
- Text
- Graphics

Text
 Text is the basic element of multimedia.
 It involves the use of text types, sizes, colours, and background colour.
 In a multimedia application, other media or screen can be linked through the use of text. This is what
you call Hypertext.
 To produce an effective multimedia program, there are three things that need to be considered.
o The position of the text on the screen.
o Length of the message.
o Legibility of the text.
Graphic
 Graphics make the multimedia application attractive.
 They help illustrate ideas through still pictures.
 There are two types of graphics used:
o Bitmaps (paint graphics) – are real images that can be captured from devices such as cameras or
scanners.
o Vector (draw graphics) – are drawn on the computer and only require a small amount of
memory.
Audio
 A multimedia application may require the use of speech, music, and sound effects. These are called
audio or the sound element.
 There are two basic types of audio or sound
o Analog audio – refers to the original sound signal.
o Digital audio – refers to the digital sampling of the actual sound. The sound used in multimedia
is digital audio
Video
 Video provides a powerful impact in a multimedia program.
 In multimedia, the digital video is gaining popularity because of the following reasons
o Video clips can be edited easily
o The digital video files can be stored like any other files in the computer and the quality of the
video can still be maintained
o The video files can be transferred within a computer network it allows non-linear editing in any
part of the video
***However, these digital video files are large in size. Transferring these files can take a long time
especially when using the internet.

Animation
 Animation is a process of making a static image look like it is moving.
 In multimedia, digital animation is used. Digital animation can be categorized into two broad
areas:
o 2D
o 3D

INTERACTIVITY OF MULTIMEDIA

 Linear Interactivity – The content progresses without you having to control the flow of the movie. Your
only control is to press the “play” and the “stop” buttons.
 Non-linear Interactivity – Allows you to decide which part you would like to view, or how much you
want to know about the content.
KINETIC TYPOGRAPY
 The technical name for “moving text”
 An animation technique mixing motion and text to express ideas using video animation.
 This text is presented over time in a manner intended to convey or evoke a particular idea or emotion.
 Text Animations are used to:
o Emphasize the meaning of a text.
o To convey an emotion-filled message.
o It has the potential to catch the viewer’s attention and impact him/her in a big way.

Examples of Kinetic Typography

 Morphing  Dynamic Montage
 Flickering Text  Neon Flickering
 Hypnotizing Text  Dash Typography
 Moving Text  Creative Letters
 Drawing the text letter by letter  Illustrated Letters
 Geometric Constructions  Scrabble Effect Typography Animation
 Fluid Geometry  Morphing Geometric Shapes
 Texture Constructions  Creative Animated Letters in Static Words
 Complex Morphing  Accelerated Typography Animation
 Graphic Animations  Emotion-filled Animation Letters
