1.0 INTRODUCTION

This document provides the calculation for worst case voltage across the close/trip coil of the MITSUBISHI
ELECTRIC Circuit Breaker (CB) for PEMBROKE Bus Section -1 400kV feeder as per item 4.2.9 of DH01 ISSUE 3
and MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC Circuit Breaker (CB) test result.

2.0 CABLE SIZING CONSIDERATIONS

2.1 General

General circuits other than Circuit Breaker closing and tripping functions carry alarm status and other low power
2
signals. A conductor of size 2.5mm is used for these applications. For such circuits cable sizing calculations are not
necessary as they carry negligible currents.

X120 CB closing and tripping circuits run between the relay panels in the 400kV P&C building to outside marshalling
kiosk X120 and to X120 CB. In this case, due to the current and distance involved, voltage drop must be taken into
consideration. Please see the following sketch (Fig: 1) for dimenstional details between Block house and the
switchyard (not to scale).

2.2 Resistances

As per BS 5467:1989 - Table 28, the resistances of 2.5 mm², 4.0 mm², 6.0 mm², 16.0 mm² and 25.0 mm² cable at
20º C are extracted and given in the table below.

Conductor size Resistance at 20º C

2.5 mm² 7.41 Ω/km
4.0 mm² 4.61 Ω/km
6.0 mm² 3.08 Ω/km
16.0 mm² 1.15 Ω/km
25.0 mm² 0.727 Ω/km

Note: For cable resistance, we used the data at 20º C. This has been the method adopted for similar NG calculations
such as lead loop resistance for high impedance differential protection setting calculation.

3.0 VOLTAGE DROP ACROSS TRIP COILS of X120 CB

3.1 X120 CB Trip Circuit 1

The worst case scenario of load on the 110V DC battery is considered in this document. The worst case scenario for
a battery low voltage condition may occur when the power supply to the battery chargers has failed, the battery has
been in use for the rated load cycle and a busbar fault (worst heavy load, because multiple circuit breakers trip at the
same time) occurs in the last minute of the battery load cycle.

The full cable-routing of the Trip circuit 1 of X120 CB is shown in Fig 2.

The calculation has been based on the following:

a) As per NGTS 3.12.4 and DH01 ISSUE 3 an available voltage of 93V for a Dispersed relay room shall be
considered as the worst case scenario.

b) Considering the three independent coils of R-Pole, Y-Pole and B-Pole are in series, the total resistance of the
serially connected 3 trip coils are (Values as per the drg: 42/SWA/2440006 sht.1) as follows:

R-pole=5 Ω, Y-pole=5 Ω, B-pole=5 Ω.

R tc= 5+5+5 = 15.00 Ω.

c) Resistances are calculated for the worst-case cable lengths and copper conductor resistance at 20º C.

Cable core sizes and resistances for the CB Trip circuit-1 interconnections are shown in table 2.

Length (L11Total =11 mts) for R11 Total is calculated as follows. (3 Branches are in parallel)

1 1 1 1
= + + = 11mtrs
L11Total 24 + 24 18 + 18 12 + 12

The Resistance of the interconnected cables is calculated as follows:

Rtrip_ca = R1 + R2 + R3 + R4 + R5 + R6 + R7 + R8 + R9 + R10+ R11 TOTAL +R17 + R18+ R19+ R20+ RRA1int+P & C

Rtrip_ca = 1.5515 Ω.

So the total resistance in the trip circuit including the 3 trip coils are

RTotal = Rtc+Rtrip_ca = 15.00 + 1.5515= 16.5515 Ω.

The Current in the circuit is 93V/16.5515 Ω = 5.6188 A.

The voltage across 3 Trip Coils = 5.6188 x 15.00 = 84.2822 V.

As per DH01 ISSUE 3, CB trip coils shall receive sufficient voltage for reliable operation i.e. a minimum of 77 V.

1 1 1 1

So the total resistance in the trip circuit including the 3 trip coils are

RTotal = Rtc+Rtrip_ca = 15.00 + 2.0489= 17.0489 Ω.

The Current in the circuit is 93V/17.0489 Ω = 5.4549 A.

The voltage across 3 Trip Coils = 5.4549 x 15.00 = 81.8236 V.

Page 9 of 11
5.0 Summary

The justification calculation for voltage drop across close/trip coil of MITSUBISHI CB for PEMBROKE Bus Section 1 –
X120 is carried out to show that it complies with item 4.2.9 of DH01 ISSUE 3.

Note 1: The above calculation is based on steady state current. Practically CB close/open command contact (from
remote/local control open/close or protection trip etc) will only be closed for 1-2 second to initiate the trip/close coil.
Therefore the CB trip/close coil can be safely initiated.

Note 2: The existing cables (2.5 mm²) between X120 Marshalling Kiosk to Disconnectors X124 & X128 are not
adequate for reliable operation of closing coils, so it is recommended to use 4 mm² cables in the place of existing 2.5
mm² cables. From above calculations and DH01 ISSUE 3, we can conclude that Circuit breaker closing coils will
receive sufficient voltage i.e. a minimum of 77V.
