CHAPTER 1
Introduction/Background of the Study:

Educational Technology or E-Learning is the use of modern day technology for learning
purposes whether it is in a classroom or at home. When it comes to teaching, it is best to use
thing or ways that they can easily access or can be interested in which for the current generation
means using technology. For their study, a group of researchers have decided to do a study on
the utilization of GENYO e-learning for learning development of students in St. Mary’s
Academy of Sta. Ana Manila. What is GENYO? Some may ask well GENYO e-Learning is a
learning platform that provides rich and engaging interactive multimedia content for the students
so they can have fun while enhancing their academic performance. Teachers can also customize
lessons and assessment modules to address individualized learning (Puffin Academy). E-learning
has become popular to the students of this generation because of its potential for providing more
flexible access to content and instruction at any time, from any place (Adewumi, Ajisola, Olojo
2012) and with students getting accustomed or used to using technology in their daily lives it is
important for schools to keep up with the evolutions of technology so that they will be able to
keep up with the interests of the students and be able to get the students to focus on learning.
Education today has evolved considerably because of advances in Web technology, the Internet
enables the ordinary person to have access to never-ending quantities of information and
knowledge efficiently and conveniently (Homavazir, 2015), with these kinds of advances,
students will be able to access information, assignment/tasks, and lesson through GENYO e-
learning in a way so that it is convenient and easy for them, and by making things easier students
may be able to understand the lessons better and be able to digest the information better for they
are using something that they are familiar with.

GENYO is a learning management system developed by Diwa Learning Systems Inc. for
schools around the Philippines to use for their students learning in school and “Learners
nowadays really engage in technology. We use GENYO as a way to motivate them to learn their
lesson easily, especially in Math. I use it to help my learners appreciate my subject,” as stated by
Sara Jane D. Pillerva who is a math teacher from Immaculate Heart of Mary in Paranaque. As of
school year 2019-2020, St. Mary’s Academy of Sta. Ana Manila has implemented GENYO e-
learning into the current years curriculum giving teachers a chance to teach or to test their
students with or through GENYO. With modern day technology making quick changes to our
daily lives, and children and teens having adapted to having technology in their lives, it is best
that schools also take part in this change to be able to keep up with their students so that they
don’t lose their students to technology. Of course with everything there comes pros and cons, or
advantages and disadvantages. With e-learning comes a number of advantages, e- learning is
good for capturing the interest of the current generation. E-learning is good for being able to
make learning easier for not just the students but also the teachers; it is good for being able to
keep students active in class for it uses something that most are familiar with which is
technology. E-learning is good for making the jobs of teachers easier and the experience of the
students more fun. Visual stimulation or making somebody more interested in something through
the use of visuals is also an advantage that e-learning has to the students. There are many more
advantages of e-learning but for now let the researcher give you some of its disadvantages, a
downside of e-learning is that the students may get even more dependent on technology than
they already are and might get too used to it being in their lives, and the interaction within
student to student may get less and less as the more they use e-learning. Knowing these
disadvantages may make schools not as open to using e-learning, but if you put the advantages
and disadvantages side by side and weigh the advantages to the disadvantages, one may be able
to properly judge this way of learning, and of course having only started not too long ago there
will be little tweaks that the programmers could still fix or change.

Knowing the effectiveness of GENYO e-learning to the students of St. Mary’s Academy
of Sta. Ana Manila is important, for using e-learning today can be called an investment in a way
that the school’s principal and subject coordinators have yet to find out if GENYO can really
help in the learning development of their students, and once they decide whether or not GENYO
is effective on their students they can choose on continuing the use of GENYO in their school or
if they should stop it. Today, technology leads the way to productivity and the internet has
become the vehicle of choice for markets and educational institution (Pendidikan, 2013), which
basically means that in today’s society, technology has been what people use to be productive
and that the internet has been what schools choose as their means of moving forward and
advancing. One of the main purposes of this study is to put an emphasis, to put importance to
technology in education, e-learning is something one may call an innovation in education for it is
a new way or new method of teaching students. The technology in education has been around as
far back as 1924 where somebody had invented a testing machine, the term e-learning has been
around since 1999 (Epignosis LLC, 2014), but here in the Philippines, e-learning has only been
known for less than a decade, which is why the researchers would like to study on GENYO for
they would like to somehow put e-learning into a bigger and brighter spotlight especially in the
Philippines.

Statement of the Problem:

E-learning is something that could one day change our world and change the way people
look at technology in our day-to-day lives; which is why the researchers, with this study, are
looking to answer the following proposed questions:

1. In what ways can e-learning help students do better in school?

2. How does GENYO e-learning help students learn better compared to learning without it?
3. What can the creators or founders of GENYO do to be able to get other schools to
implement GENYO e-learning into their school curriculum?

With the help of the stated proposed questions, the researchers would like to get more people
to see e-learning as the future of society’s education. The researchers’ main goal for this study is
to get more schools in the Philippines to see e-learning as a tool that they could use to help
students in their academics, as well as a way to make the work load on teachers even just a little
bit lighter. The researchers’ also aim to get e-learning to reach as many schools around the
world, especially to the countries that are lacking in technological resources, to be able to
enlighten these countries on the possible changes that technology could bring to their country.

Scope and Delimitations:

This study focuses on GENYO e-learning and if it really has a positive effect on the
learning development of the students at St. Mary’s Academy of Sta. Ana Manila, and with the
information gathered from this study, the researchers hope to get more schools to use e-learning.
The researchers look to use the high school students of St. Mary’s Academy of Sta. Ana Manila
as their main respondents to their survey, the researchers also look to interview the Diwa
representatives who handle the use of GENYO at the school and possibly even some of the
faculty.

Although the primary and elementary students also use GENYO e-learning, the
researchers have decided that they this study will focus mainly on the secondary or the high
school students for they will have a better understanding of GENYO e-learning; however the
researchers may interview some of the elementary teachers who also teach high school level to
see if e-learning has a different impact or effect on the different grade levels.

Limitations:

Seeing as people have different opinions on the use of GENYO, the researchers may have
a hard time with the answers of the respondents if ever they may answer based on their own
opinions. The researchers may also have a hard time interpreting the opinions of the respondents
if ever they do not explain properly.
