JHS 194 PTA General Meeting Minutes

October 23, 2018 at 5pm

Attendees: PTA Executive Board Members, Mrs. Miller (Principal), Ann Lippert (Parent Coordinator),
Jeannie Gee (Absent)
Call to Order
Pledge of Allegiance
President’s Report
• Review of last month’s PTA meeting minutes, and approval.
• Important Dates:
o 194 Open House - October 24th, 5:30 - 6:30pm
o Bayside High School Open House - Saturday 10/27, 2pm - 4pm
o Townsend Harris Open House – Monday 11/05, 5:30 – 7:30pm
o No School: Tuesday, 11/05 (Election Day)
o CEC meeting – Wednesday 11/07 at 7pm
o Martin Van Buren H.S. Open House – Thursday, 11/08 at 5:30pm
o Cardozo H.S. Open House – Thursday, 11/08 at 6pm and Saturday 11/07 at 10am
o No School: Monday, 11/12 (Veteran’s Day)
o No School: 11/22 & 11/23 (Thanksgiving Break)
• School Facebook page was created; JHS 194 Parents
o The goal is to have information flow from the staff to the school to the parents, and to assist in
addressing questions or issues that can be brought to Mrs. Miller, or raised at the PC meetings.
o The PTA wants to make it as easy as possible to hear from parents and support this flow of
information.
o The Facebook page is a closed group for 194 parents, and those who join will be asked to
provide the student’s name and class, so that the group will remain secure.

Vice President’s Report


Fundraisers:
• Uncle Jerry’s Catalogs are still available, and orders can be placed until Nov. 13th.
Box Tops:
• For every 50 Box Tops, a student will receive a voucher for a free snack at the school store.
Shoparoo:
• Download the Shoparoo app and link your Shoprite and Stop n Shop card so that the school can receive
funds based on the amount spent at these stores. When you use the app to take pictures of your
receipts at TJ Maxx, the school will also receive earn funds . All the information is on the school
website under the Fundraising link.
Volunteering:
Please try to volunteer your time at the school store. The school website has a link that allows you to sign
up and volunteer.
Treasurer’s Report (A Statement was read on behalf of the Treasurer)
• Membership dues collected to date are $7,193. This represents 22% participation for the entire
school. A breakdown by class participation list is posted on the website. The class to have the highest
participation rate, per grade, will win a pizza party for their class. The 2018 membership drive includes
staff and teachers as well.
Mrs. Miller’s (Principal) Report
Welcome to 8th Grade parents who came to better understand the High School Application process and to
7th Grade parents as well. Learning the High School Application process early is important.
Vision Zero:

• The Vision Zero Program will be working with the 6th grade, and 6th grade Deans will be reaching out to
determine what the dates will be. If possible, presentations will also be made to 7th and 8th grades.
Please encourage your children to be cautious at entry and dismissal, and to refrain from running and
playing on sidewalks and in the streets around school.
College Access for All Program:
• We have chosen New York Ed to be partners with JHS 194 in this program. It is a 7th grade program
and the goal is for every student to have access to and visit a college campus. NY Ed will run advisory
programs and parent workshops on college access. The program aims to help students visualize their
educational journey and achievements, and realize the importance of being focused on and achieving
their education goals. Staff and Students will begin some training in December, and there will be a
“College For All” event in January.
Quality Review:
• There will be a Quality Review on Nov. 1st and 2nd. Outside reviewers will tour the school, and when
the review is made public, parents will be notified on Pupilpath.
Pupilpath
• Please register to be on Pupilpath. It’s the easiest way to get in touch with Mrs. Miller. Both students
and parents need to have an account.
After School Activities :
• Lego Robotics will begin in November. Applications for Lego Robotics have already been sent out.
There will be 2 Lego Robotics teams.
Social Worker Partnership :
• Last year, the school had a full time on site social worker in addition to JHS 194 Staff. That partnership
program will continue. Our new social worker is starting the week of Oct. 29th. She is prepared to
provide support to students, teachers, groups of students as well as parents. Workshops for parents
will be forthcoming. A new guidance counselor was hired, to be available Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Halloween:
• Dressing up in costume is encouraged. No masks, weapons or props will be allowed. An informational
letter will be sent out the end of this week.

• Please contact Ann if anyone needs their student code to create their Pupilpath account.
• Tuesday Oct. 30th, during Parent-Engagement time (2:30 – 4:30pm ), there will be a Flu Shot Event
hosted by Rite Aid, taking place in the school Library. Flu shots are free with an insurance card. No co-
pays will be charged. Both parents and students can receive flu shots, with insurance cards.
• Big Apple Awards: Students can vote for your favorite Teacher. Nominations close on Nov. 26th, and
nomination cards are available during the meeting.
Beacon
Beacon will host a Halloween Dance on Oct. 31st from 3 – 4:30pm. There will also be a Haunted House from
4:30 – 5:30pm. Please see available flyers. Tickets are free but need to be processed through the EventBrite
website. Donations are encouraged and can also be processed through this website, as Beacon is a valuable
program
