STORYTELLING, CHARACTER PORTRAYAL,

ELOCUTION 2019
GUIDELINES AND MECHANICS

A. GUIDELINES
1. Storytelling2019 will have 2 categories: Preschool for Category A and Grades 1 or 2 for Category B
Character Portrayal is for Grades 3 or 4 (Category C)
Elocution is for Grades 5 or 6 (Category D)

2. Contest shall have an ELIMINATION round for Categories B to D (no elimination round for Preschool---
all proceed to Final Round) and schools will be clustered to wit:

West I, II & Southwest Schools- Merry Child School*, 8:00 AM, October 15, 2019
North I, II & South Schools – Corpus Christi Macasandig*, 8 AM, October 16, 2019
East I, II & Central District- Capitol University Basic Education Dept,* 8 AM, October 17, 2019

*TENTATIVE VENUE

3. In order for a contestant to proceed to the final round, he/she must able to garner an average score of 90%
from the three judges. For consistency and continuity, judges for the elimination round will be the same
judges From Day 1 to 3. For the final round, there will be different set of judges.

5. REGISTRATION FEE is PER CATEGORY and must be paid on or before October 15, 2019

Member School - 300 Php Non-Member- 500 Php

6. PAYMENT OPTIONS:

(Submit proof of deposit via messenger or email or bring deposit slip on the day of the event don’t forget
to write your School’s name and the treasurer will readily give you an official receipt)
Option 2- Pay On the Elimination Round Date
7. REGISTRATION PERIOD
a. Registration period is October 7-14, 2019. Fill out the Registration Form attached and send via
email: capes_2016@yahoo.com or via messenger: CAPES MEMBERS.
If internet connection is a challenge, confirm your participation and the names of your contestants via text
message to the CAPES Secretary, Ms. Evelyn Mosqueda of Lourdes College Grade School by texting @
09355016732 .
8. CONTESTANTS AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
There should only be 1 contestant per category. Attire: Plain white shirt/polo/blouse and denim/maong
long pants- for STORYTELLING and ELOCUTION while for CHARATER PORTRAYAL- contestants
should be in character. IDs should not be worn during the contest.
B. MECHANICS for STORYTELLING for Categories A and B
1. All stories shall be taken from any of the 4 stories given for each category. All stories
should have CARE for the/ ENVIRONMENT for a theme.
2. There shall be no reading of stories from a copy or a book. All tellers are expected to
have memorized with mastery, to the point of being conversational, his or her story. This
is because memorization is not a goal in storytelling. Instead, a story should sound
conversational.
3. The contestant shall perform within the designated stage or performance area.
4. The following criteria will be observed:
MANNER/PERFORMANCE SPIRIT - 30%
- This area includes factors such as enthusiasm, vibrancy, poise, personality,
smoothness, energy, and all other similar factors involving the spirit of the delivery.
STORY DEVELOPMENT - 20%
- is the way the storyteller puts ideas together so the audience can understand them. The story
immediately engages the audience’s attention, then smoothly builds up to a climax and
conclusion.
LANGUAGE - 20%
- refers to the choice of words that relate to the story. Proper use of grammar and correct
pronunciation will show that the storyteller is the master of the words being used.
PHYSICAL - 15%
- The teller’s appearance should reinforce the story. Body language should support the story
through gestures, expressions and body positions.
VOICE - 15%
- is the sound that carries the message. It should be flexible, moving from one pitch level to
another for emphasis, and should have a variety of rate and volume. Stories do not require
special sound effects, but they can occasionally spice up a story.

5. Time Limit-There shall be no minimum or maximum allowable time but tellers are
discouraged to say adlibs.
6. The sequence of presentation is determined by drawing lots. Once the contestant’s
number is called and he/she is not around, he/she loses his/her turn. Hence, all
contestants are encouraged to be in the contest room while waiting for his/her turn to
present.
7. Only the CAPES Officers shall choose the members of the Board of Judges. Coaches,
teachers and trainers of contestants are disqualified to become judges.
8. The registered coach of the contestant is the ONLY person authorized to make a protest
before the announcement of the results.
9. The members of the Board of Judges shall be in complete control of the contest. Their
decision shall be considered final in all questions and protests.
10. All participants (coaches and contestants) will be given a certificate of participation both
during elimination and final round. Medals will be given to 3 winners for each category
–Champion; 2nd Place; 3rd Place
11. Past Champions or Gold Medalists of this contest are no longer qualified to join in the
same category to give others a chance. However, they can still join in another category
which they have not yet won. For example, Gold Medalist in Category A can still join in
Category B but is not qualified to compete again in Category A.
C. MECHANICS for CHARACTER PORTRAYAL for Category C (Grades 3 or 4)
Character portrayal is an art imitating someone in a dramatic or an artistic way. The person to
be impersonated (to act like the character) may be a real person, a book or a film personality)

1- Characters should demonstrate CARE and LOVE for ENVIRONMENT


2- Contestants may choose their own character, though CAPES has suggested characters to
wit:
(a) Lorax (b) Captain Planet (c) Pocahontas (d) the late Gina Lopez

3- Contestant’s coach will choose their character and their piece and deliver it based on the
ff: criteria:

Presentation Skills: -30


(Mannerisms, audience contact, voice modulation, ability to keep the audience engaged
by their speaking style)
Establishing Mood: -30
(resembling the character completely; taking the appearance in a superior
manner)
Verbal Clarity: -30
(annunciation and pronunciation of words; voice strength and projection)
Costume, Over-All Impact -10
(appropriateness, X-factor)

4- Delivery of pieces should be at least 2 minutes to a maximum of 4 .Bell is rung after 4


minutes to signal the contestant to stop whether he or she is finished or not. Scoring is
not affected even if the delivery has been stopped.
5- Contestants may wear costume, bring props to be in complete character

D. MECHANICS for ELOCUTION for Category D (grades 5 or 6)
Elocution is a speech with standard accent; an oral interpretation of literary piece written by
someone.
1. All contestants shall only have one-piece to be provided by CAPES.
2. Delivery of the pieces shall be judged according to the following criteria:
Mastery - 30%
(evaluated by the amount of unnecessary pauses; spontaneity and fluidity of delivery)
Verbal Clarity - 30%
(annunciation and pronunciation of words; voice strength and projection)
Presentation and Speaking Style - 40%
(Mannerisms, audience contact, stage presence, voice modulation, ability to keep the
audience engaged by their speaking style)
