TYPES OF PHRASES
A. VERBAL PHRASES
1. Gerund – begins with a verb that ends in –ing and is used as a NOUN

2. Infinitive – begins with to + base form of the verb and is used as a NOUN, an ADJECTIVE or an
ADVERB
NOUN: To succeed in this round was my only hope of a medal.
ADJECTIVE: The only way to find the treasure chest is to meet with the fairy prince.
ADVERB: She went home to prepare for the dinner party.
3. Participial -is a verbal ending in -ing (present) or -ed, -en, -d, -t, -n, or -ne (past) that functions as an
ADJECTIVE, modifying a noun or pronoun. A participial phrase consists of a participle plus
modifier(s), object(s), and/or complement(s)
