The Student Chapter of the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers: Its Impact on Students’ Development

as Basis for Institutional Assistance

This study attempted to investigate the impact of the student chapter of the Philippine Institute of Civil
Engineers on students’ development. It attempted to answer the major problem: What is the impact of
the student chapter of the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers on the development of the civil
engineering students of the University of Pangasinan and what institutional assistance may be
proposed?

Specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the student chapter of the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE) in
terms of:
1.1. membership,
1.2. advisorship,
1.3. activities,
1.4. finances,
1.5. Project implementation?
2. What is the extent of the impact of the activities of the Student Chapter of PICE on students’
development as perceived by the officers, members, chapter advisers and administrators?
3. Are there significant differences in the subject- cases’ perceptions on the impact student
chapter of PICE on students’ development?
4. What are the problems encountered by the officers and members of the student chapter of PICE
and to what extent are these problems encountered by the subject cases?
5. Based on the impact of the activities of the Student Chapter of PICE on students’ development
and the problems encountered by the officers and members, what institutional assistance may
be proposed?
6. How acceptable is the institutional assistance as perceived by the officers of the student chapter
of PICE, chapter advisers and selected university administrators?
7. Are significant differences in the perceptions on the acceptability of the proposed institutional
assistance?

Basic Assumptions:

This study considered the following underlying assumptions:

1. The Student Chapter of the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers is a recognized student
organization of the University of Pangasinan.
2. Institutional assistance enhances the impact of the student chapter of PICE on students’
development.
Null Hypothesis:

1. There are no significant differences in the perceptions of the members, officers, advisers, and
administrators on the impact student chapter of PICE on students’ development?
2. There are no significant differences in the perceptions on the acceptability of the proposed
institutional assistance?
