Experience Design - Island of Bequia 4 beat - Style Ensemble

Goals
Students will be able to say and/or drum all four parts of “Island of Bequia.”
Students will be able to say and/or drum one part of “Island of Bequia” while others play
different parts.

VA SoL’s
1.5 The student will perform rhythmic patterns that include quarter notes, paired eighth notes,
and quarter rests, using instruments, body percussion, and voice

1.15 The student will demonstrate manners and teamwork that contribute to success in the
music classroom.

Materials
Hand drums of various sizes
Chairs set up in a circle

Process
Play “Island of Bequia” all together 4x through with words, starting with Maura. (30 seconds)

Emily: Introduce 5th part (Cat, dog, fish, rat). Say it, students echo. Students will play while
saying the rhythm. Repeat as necessary. (1 min 30 sec)
Maura: Introduce 3rd part (Alligator, snake). Say it, students echo. Explain/ask about rests.
Students will play while saying the rhythm. Repeat as necessary. Ask what the previous rhythm
was. (1 min 30 sec)
Julia F: Introduce 2nd part (Turkey, chicken, goose). Say it, students echo. Students will play
while saying the rhythm. Repeat as necessary. Ask what the previous two rhythms were. (1 min
30 sec)
Julia P: Introduce 1st part (Cheetahs, and elephants). Say it, students echo. Students will play
while saying the rhythm. Repeat as necessary. Ask what the previous three rhythms were. (1
min 30 sec)
Gabby: Introduce 4th part (Parakeet, bluebird, ostrich). Say it, students echo. Students will play
while saying the rhythm. Repeat as necessary. Ask what the previous four rhythms were. (1 min
30 sec)

Playing ​all​ together: Emily “from me to (name), play this part,” start playing. Maura, same thing
with her part, adding in. Repeat for everyone until everyone is playing. (2 mins)

Assessment
Students will be assessed informally by observation throughout the session. They will also
show their understanding by answering questions that review the other parts they previously
learned.

Part 1: Cheetahs and elephants


Part 2: Turkey, chicken, goose
Part 3: Alligator, snake
Part 4: Parakeet, bluebird, ostrich
Part 5: Cat, dog, fish, rat

1st: Emily (Cat, dog, fish, rat)


2nd: Maura (Alligator, snake, rest, rest)
3rd: Julia F. (Turkey, chicken, goose, rest)
4th: Julia P. (Cheetahs, and elephants)
5th: Gabby (Parakeet, bluebird, ostrich)
