MECT 3365 - Computer Aided Design I

Exam01

Time: 120 minutes Points: 55

Instructions

1. Turn off your cell phones

2. Numerical problems without clearly indicated procedure will be considered
incomplete.
3. Draw clear diagrams. Label them properly.
4. Draw free body, bending moment, and shear force diagrams where possible.
5. Solve problems systematically. Do not write haphazardly.
6. Use clear handwriting. You can use both sides of the paper.
7. Use only pencil. Erase your mistakes clearly.
8. Units are very important.
9. For design problems, clearly state assumptions and validate them.
10. Failure to follow these instructions will result in grade penalty (up to 50%)

1. (10) A thin walled cylindrical vessel has an internal diameter of 50 in and external diameter
of 51 in is made of steel with yield strength of 50 ksi and tensile strength of 100 ksi. What is
the maximum pressure the vessel can withstand,
a. If the van mises stress is not to exceed 80% of the yield strength of the material.

3. (2 0) Figure shows a hand crank with static vertical load

applied to the handle.
a. Draw free body diagram and label the axis for rod
part AB.
b. Draw the bending moment diagrams for rod part AB
(all possible axes).
c. Locate the point of maximum stress (along the
length of the rod). Explain your reasoning.
d. Show and label location of maximum stresses (shear
and normal) on the cross-section.
e. Draw stress elements with maximum stresses (both
tensile and compressive)
f. For the element with normal tensile stress,
i. Determine the van-misses stress.
ii. Determine the maximum shear stress. E
For steel Young's modulus is 30 x 106 psi and Poisson's
ratio of 0.3. Ignore stess concentation.
