1.0 INTRODUCTION
If you’re like me, you probably have tons of Internet marketing books, tapes,
videos, and software.

A lot of the material is actually very good at telling you how to promote products,
write effective sales copy, increase the number of newsletter subscribers, and
get customers to buy even more products.

That’s all fine and dandy, but as far as I’m concerned it puts the cart before the
horse. Why?

Because before you can do any of that stuff on the Internet, you need two very
important ingredients. And they are:

• A good idea
and…
• Lots of targeted traffic

Many people believe that there just simply aren’t any really good business ideas
left on the Web that are worth pursuing. They think floods of marketers have
rushed in to give surfers all the products and information they could ever want.

Well, let me assure you that there’s nothing further from the truth. Sure there are
areas on the Internet that are pretty saturated. In fact, Internet marketing
happens to be one of them.

But there still are plenty of excellent niche business ideas where the competition
is low or almost non-existent. That’s the focus of this book.

I’ve spent months identifying, analyzing, evaluating, and re-evaluating the type of
information and products that everyday people are searching for on the Web.
(You’ll learn which tools I used in later sections of this book as well as how to use
them yourself.)

When the dust settled, I identified 20 niche business areas that are in high
demand, but have low competition. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to
create a Web business and get it in front of that targeted traffic.

I’ll help by telling you some of what I’ve done it with my own Web sites.

By the way, if you were expecting a book that covers every aspect of Internet
marketing, you won’t find it here. There are plenty of excellent resources on the
subject. However, in the sections following the niche blueprints, you’ll find lots of
great marketing tips and ideas to get you going.

7
Another great resource is Ken Evoy’s book, Make Your Site Sell, which is widely
hailed as the bible of Internet marketing. It covers just about everything you’d
ever want to know about doing business on the Internet.

1.1 How To Use This Book

As I mentioned, inside this book you’ll find 20 ready-to-go blueprints for starting a
niche business on the Internet. For each blueprint you get:

• A summary of possible business themes and ideas for your Web site
• Root words that you can use to search for additional keywords
• 15 high demand, low supply keywords for creating content Web pages
• Up to 5 affiliate programs that you should evaluate and consider joining
• Additional ideas for making money beyond affiliate programs
• Other helpful insights (not available for every topic.)

What I mean by “high demand” is that the keywords are enjoying a high number
of searches by Web surfers. And “low supply” means that there are a low
number of competing Web pages explicitly created around those keywords.

But before you dive into creating a Web site, make sure that you’ve thought
about how your business will be unique. If it contains lots of useless content, your
visitors won’t return, even if you have no competitors.

1.1.1 Five Ways to Use The Business Blueprints

Every marketing guru will tell you that the best business to start on the Internet is
one that focuses on a niche area and receives lots of targeted traffic.

But not every Web site is created for the same reason. For example, here are
some great ways that you can use the niche business blueprints in this book to
help achieve your online business goals:

Use them to grow existing Web sites – Let’s say, for example, that you already
have an online store, but don’t want to change it around to accommodate content
Web pages. No problem. Just create a separate content oriented site and weave
in links to your store. In fact, this is a great way to PRE-sell your products.

Use them to earn affiliate income – Most people search the Internet for
information. So help them out. All you need to do is create a content rich Web
site that includes your affiliate links to recommended suppliers. Your visitors will
appreciate your sage advice as well as the convenient link to a product that will
quickly solve their problem.

8
Use them to sell your own products – Create content Web pages that drive traffic
to your products or services. While you’re at it, weave affiliate links into the pages
so that you have two streams of income.

Use them to sell ad space – You’ve probably heard about Google AdSense. It’s
the hottest new way to earn revenue from your content Web pages. All you need
to do is place AdSense ad panels on your Web site and wait for the clicks. Many
people are saying that it’s beating the socks off their affiliate programs.

However, there is a catch. In order for those clicks to add up to some real
money, your Web site needs to receive lots traffic and it must contain lots of
information-rich pages.

Use them to build your company’s image or to collect leads – Perhaps you sell a
very expensive product that no one would actually order over the Internet. Or,
perhaps you want to take your company to the next level by enhancing its image
and brand awareness. Using information-rich Web pages is an excellent way to
collect leads and/or introduce people to your organization and products.

1.1.2 Think Outside The Box

As you peruse the ideas in this book, keep an open mind. For example, you may
find that a particular business blueprint has some, but not all of the elements that
fit into your vision.

No problem.

Take the parts that you like and use the tools and methods that I present to
investigate related paths that you find more appealing.

1.1.3 Research For This Book

The research for this book was done using three highly respected online tools:

1. Wordtracker
2. SiteBuildIt!
3. Overture (Search Term Suggestion Tool)

Since I’m not the owner of these tools, I can’t guarantee their accuracy. But,
without a doubt, they offer three of the absolute best ways for identifying effective
keywords on the Internet. See section 3.1 Searching for Keywords below for a
full discussion.

The other thing is that I can’t guarantee or give you any specific numbers on how
much money you’ll make from these business ideas. No book can tell you that.

9
Among other things, much of your success will depend on the amount of time
and effort you devote to growing your business.

But, with this book, you’re starting from a position of knowledge and strength.

Finally, don’t worry about these topics being saturated anytime soon. There’s
plenty of room to grow your business. I first uncovered them over two years ago
and they are nearly as wide open now as they were then. But I encourage you to
get started as soon as possible. Your competition isn’t going to wait for you to
catch up.

10
2.0 UNDERSTANDING THE BUSINESS
BLUEPRINTS
Each blueprint consists of the following sections:

2.1 Overview
This section includes a brief description of the topic as well as possible Web site
themes and ideas. To get more ideas, I recommend that you visit the Google
search engine, enter the suggested root keywords, and check out the
competition.

Take the best of what you see and build up it to create a business that will be
unique. Also, don’t hesitate to survey family, friends, and strangers to get their
opinions of what could make your site stand apart.

2.2 Root Keyword(s)

These are the generic search terms for the blueprint topic. I used these keywords
to research and identify the high-demand, low supply keywords listed under
section “2.3 Profitable Keywords for Creating Web Pages” below.

You don’t have to limit the root keywords to those that I’ve listed. Just make sure
that any other words that you add are closely tied to the theme of your site. That
way you can be sure that your niche business will receive the targeted traffic you
want.

Here’s what I mean. For one of my Web sites, I used as many keywords as
possible that included the root word “decorating”. But when I wanted to expand
the number of content pages, I sought closely related keywords that contained
the root words “décor” and “design”, for example.

When you want to find more profitable keywords for your blueprint, simply enter a
root keyword into the brainstorming feature of the tools discussed in this book

2.3 Profitable Keywords for Creating Web Pages

These are some of the search terms that people are entering into the Google
search engine to find information. I’ve identified 15 popular keywords for each
business blueprint.

The keywords are not listed in any particular order. But they are more than
enough to get you started in the right direction.

I chose to give you high demand, low supply keywords from Google for two very
important reasons:

11
1. According to Wordtracker, Google gets 35.00% of all search engine
traffic (approx. 132 million searches per day). Not only is it the largest
search engine, but it probably will be your top source for free traffic.

2. If a niche is in high demand in Google, it’s a pretty safe bet that it’s wide
open in the other search engines and directories. But the reverse is rarely
the case. So, it was critical that all the business topics in this book pass
the Google test.

Ok, back to the keyword lists…

I recommend that you use the tips in section 3.1 Searching for Keywords
section to reconfirm and fine tune your list, and to gather additional search terms.
There are more words that I didn’t list!

In addition, reconfirming your list is a good idea because when Web surfers can’t
find the information they want using one keyword, they’ll try other close
variations. So, you’ll want to know exactly which keyword variations are getting
the MOST traffic.

The number of searches for all keywords will change monthly – and new
variations will appear. So, I recommend that you periodically use the research
tools to ensure you’re receiving maximum traffic.

2.4 Potential Affiliate Programs

This section lists affiliate programs that you should evaluate and determine if
they are worth recommending to your visitors. Your reputation is on the line so
make sure that you’re recommending suppliers that you would purchase from
yourself.

I identified up to five affiliate programs per topic just to get you started. You
shouldn’t seek tons of affiliate programs for your web site. It would be too time-
consuming to manage them. Plus, having too many could impact your credibility
in the eyes of your visitors.

You’ll find that a handful (definitely no more than 15) will work just fine and are
manageable. You might want to consider joining only 3 or 4 really good affiliate
programs. This way you’ll be able to better focus your time and resources.

To find more online affiliate programs, I recommend that you first search through
affiliate networks such as www.cj.com and www.associateprograms.com.

Next, identify affiliate programs using the Google search engine. Simply enter a
root keyword along with the words “affiliate program”.

For example, let’s assume that the root keyword is “mountain bikes”.

12
In Google, you would enter …..”mountain bikes” + “affiliate program”. Yes, you
should put the quotes around both keywords and use the plus sign. The plus sign
tells the search engine that you want to see web pages that contain the words
“mountain bikes” and “affiliate program”.

The quotes around the keyword tell the search engine that the returned web
pages MUST contain that keyword. In other words, the quotes help to narrow
your search.

If you don’t use the quotes, the search engine will return all pages that contain
the words “bikes” and/or “program”. Many of these pages will likely have nothing
to do with affiliate programs.

Depending on the results you’re getting, you may want to try different keywords
to narrow or broaden your search. For example, replace “mountain bikes” with
“bikes”.

I could go on and on about affiliate programs, but one of the best book I’ve ever
read on the subject is free. It’s Ken Evoy’s Affiliate Masters ebook. You can
download it for free by clicking here. Ken does and outstanding job of explaining
the in’s and out’s of making money with affiliate programs.

Another affiliate marketing resource that I highly recommend is The Super

Affiliate Handbook by Rosalind Gardner. She reveals secrets to how makes over
$400,000 per year, just from promoting other people’s stuff!

2.4.1 More Affiliate Income Sources

You’ll find that most online stores pay affiliate commissions that are less than
15%. That’s certainly not bad for simply encouraging visitors to click on a text link
or banner.

But, don’t overlook a source that can pay commissions that are 3 to 4 times
higher than suppliers of hard goods. Which products am I referring to? e-Books,
of course!

You can find eBooks that others have written on your topic to recommend on
your site. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of eBooks out there, and the
authors would welcome the exposure your Web business would give them.

So where is this honey hole of knowledge and profits? You’ll find it at

the…ClickBank Marketplace

There are eBooks on a huge range of topics, many of which would tie nicely to
the niche business blueprints in this book.

13
Many of these books aren’t heavily promoted by their authors, which can actually
work to your advantage. That’s because visitors to your site will perceive the
book as being a fresh new resource.

But I must caution you. While there are many high-quality eBooks offered on
ClickBank Marketplace, you’ll also find products that may not be up to your
standards.

So, before you recommend a book, be sure to purchase and review a copy for
yourself. Being able to provide an informed opinion to your visitors will definitely
enhance your credibility…and lead to more sales.

2.5 More Ideas for Making Money

In this section of the blueprints you’ll find additional avenues, beyond affiliate
programs, for making money from your web business. You’ll probably come up
with more ideas on your own, but use this list to jumpstart your internal
brainstorming machine.

Publish an eBook or eBooklet – The top reason that people surf the Web is to
find information to satisfy some kind of need If your content Web site helps in
this effort, visitors will perceive you as an expert and many will want more. So,
you could publish an ebook or ebooklet that contains your very best ideas and
insights on a high demand topic.

Actually, you don’t even have to write the book/booklet yourself! You can find
free-lance writers, editors, and more at Web sites such as Guru.com and
Elance.com. By the way, the easiest and least expensive way to publish your
book is in an electronic (eBook) format such as Adobe’s pdf format.

You may also be faced with a situation where you don’t have enough material to
create a full blown book. No problem! Create eBooklets that are 5 to 20 pages in
length and solve specific problems.

If they contain the answers to someone’s problem, people will still buy the
ebooklets, regardless of their length.

Create a video – About half the population learns best by seeing someone else
do it first. For example, if you’re a cake decorator, you could offer a how to video
that demonstrates various decorating techniques.

Conduct tele-seminars, e-classes, and e-courses – These are becoming more

and more popular. A tele-seminar, or tele-class, is a conference over the
telephone where you meet with a small group of participants. You can share
advice and allow people to ask you questions.

14
An e-class is a similar gathering that is conducted in an Internet chat room, rather
than on the phone.

A more formal way of sharing your knowledge is to create an e-course, in which

you send lessons and other information to your participants via email.

Create a subscription web site – This is a great way to establish a predictable

stream of income. And if what you offer is truly valuable information, your
subscribers will remain with you for years.

Sell advertising – The hottest thing going these days is Google AdSense which
can quickly provide an additional stream of income for any size business.
AdSense has gotten great reviews from such notables as Allan Gardyne of
AssociatePrograms.com. Here’s what he says…
http://www.associateprograms.com/search/adsense.shtml

I’ve placed AdSense ad panels on my web sites and the results have been
outstanding – even surpassing most of my affiliate programs..

You can learn more about Google AdSense by clicking here

https://www.google.com/adsense/.

Offer your own hard goods – If you have an online store or are thinking of
starting one, you could create content Web site pages to bring that traffic to your
online business.

Sell someone else’s hard goods – If you can’t find that perfect affiliate program
to represent online, then investigate off-line businesses. You could enter into a
joint venture arrangement to take orders and pass them along for a commission.

2.6 Other Comments

This is a wild card section of certain blueprints that includes any other random
thoughts that came to my mind.

15
3.0 BUILDING YOUR WEB BUSINESS
3.1 Searching for Keywords
There are three tools that I used to find and evaluate the 20 high demand, low
competition niche business ideas presented in this book. They include:

Wordtracker
This is an excellent analytical tool. Wordtracker is a database that captures all
the searches for the major search engines, including:

Global Search Engines:

Google (35.00% of all searches)
MSN (21.90% of all searches)
Altavista (.80% of all searches)
Teoma (.052% of all searches)
Alltheweb (.10% of all searches)
Lycos (.92% of all searches)
Hotbot (.10% of all searches)

Global Directories:
Yahoo (29.80% of all searches)
Looksmart (.13% of all searches)
Open Directory (.35% of all searches)

Pay Per Click Engines:

Overture (1.02% of all searches)
Goclick (.06% of all searches)

(Source: Wordtracker – Dec 2005)

Wordtracker is an outstanding tool for brainstorming and analyzing the

effectiveness of keywords. It tells you how many times a keyword was searched
upon in any of the above search engines and directories.

In addition, it will provide the number of competing pages for a keyword as well
as an estimate of the number of searches that will be performed for that keyword
during the next 24 hours.

Another feature that I like about Wordtracker is its Keyword Effectiveness Index
(KEI). The KEI compares the number of times a keyword has appeared in the
Wordtracker database with the number of competing web pages.

The end result is a score that pinpoints how effective that keyword will be for your
Web site. The higher the KEI score, the more effective the keyword.

16
I use Wordtracker all the time because I can get a sense of what’s happening in
all the major search engines and directories.

You can use this tool for free on a limited basis. The free trial version allows you
to perform keyword competition searches, but it will only tell you how your search
term is performing in MSN.

Nevertheless, the free trial version is good for doing initial research. For example,
if you find that there is heavy competition for your keyword in MSN, odds are
there will be fierce competition in Google as well. Try Wordtracker for yourself
by clicking here.

If you decide that you’d like to gain access to the full version of Wordtracker,
you can select a timeframe that suits you –from one day up to a full year. Trust
me, you can do a lot of research in a day!

SiteBuildIt! (SBI!)
SiteBuildIt! is an all-in-one web hosting, site-building and web marketing tool
offered by SiteSell.com. It’s really a suite of tools.

SBI! has everything you need to get a Web business up and running super fast.
You can register your domain, create web pages, submit pages to search
engines, collect email addresses, start a newsletter, create a blog, and lots more!

SBI! also has an excellent brainstorming and research tool that will present you
with dozens of profitable keywords, i.e, high demand and low supply, for your
niche business topic.

And for each keyword, it assigns a profitability score that tells you how well the
search term work for your web site.

I can’t say enough great things about SBI! It’s simply the best.

Overture Search Term Suggestion Tool

According to Wordtracker, Overture receives 1.02% of all search engine traffic
(approximately 4 million searches per day). The Overture Search Term
Suggestion Tool is free tool that allows you to query the Overture database.
http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/

You can enter your root keyword and find out how many times it and close
variations were searched upon during the prior month.

This tool has two disadvantages:

17
• It won’t tell you how many Web pages are competing for each keyword.
Nor will you get an indication of how effective the keyword will be for your
Web site.

• It compiles singular, plural, upper and lowercase keywords as one search

term. Trust me, in a big search engine, such as Google, you’ll get a very
different result if, for example, you perform a search for “kid” versus “kids”.
Try it and you’ll see what I mean. This is important because one of these
words will be more effective when it comes to getting a keyword focused
Web page to rank highly.

Nevertheless, it’s a useful alternative for collecting new keywords if you don’t
want to pay for Wordtracker or SBI!

When I use this tool, I take a “bottom to top” approach. Here’s how it works. Let’s
say that you enter the root word “kid” into the Suggestion Tool.

You should receive a brainstormed list of many keywords that contain the root
word dog. The keywords will be listed in descending order, starting with the most
frequently searched keywords. In fact, “kid” will be the first keyword on the list.

Even though you may be tempted, don’t immediately select “kid” as a candidate
for a content Web page for your niche Web business. Here’s why:

• The term is non-specific and you have no idea of what the surfer is looking
for. Many people will enter the generic keyword first, and then try more
specific terms once they see that the initial search doesn’t deliver the
desired results.

• The level of competing pages will be fierce for generic keywords like this
one. The chances of you achieving a top 10 ranking is almost impossible.

So, I recommend that you start at the bottom of the list and find more specific
words that tie closely to your niche. Why?

• You’re more likely to find keywords that will give you the targeted traffic
you’re after.

• The big web sites usually won’t bother with competing for many of these
lower traffic keywords. But that’s great news for a niche player, like you.

(Note: After you’ve created pages for a number of your high demand, low
competition keywords, you may want to create pages for some of the high
demand, high competition keywords to profit from Google AdSense. You see,
when visitors reach your site through your other keywords, some people will

18
check out additional pages. If they happen to reach a page that was created
around a highly competitive keyword -- like kid -- and click on a Google AdSense
ad, you’ll earn a higher payout for that click.)

Okay, that’s enough for now….

After you’ve gone through the blueprints, I’ll give you lots more marketing tips
and ideas for growing your online business.

Now, it’s time for you to select your perfect

niche blueprint.
Use the Quick Start Action Plan on the next page to put your online business on
the fast track to big profits and lifelong success!

Note: Neither the categories, blueprints, or keywords within the blueprints are
presented in any particular order.

10 Implement additional money making strategies from your

business blueprint

20
4.0 HOME & GARDEN
For 2002 (the most recent stat I could find), comScore Media Metrix reported that
online sales for home and garden products were approximately $2 billion and
growing quickly. That should bring a huge smile to your face. Why?...

Because it means that if you create a great content site and recommend quality
products, there is a high probability that people will open their wallets. Here are
the high demand business ideas that my research disclosed:

• House Plans
• Bathrooms
• Window Treatments
• Patios & Decks
• Landscaping

21
4.1 Blueprint 1: House Plans
Create a Web site that gives advice on house plans. For example, many people
wonder what questions they should ask contractors about house plans and
custom home building. Your Web site can be the place they find answers.

Provide insights of how and where plans be changed to save money. You could
even locate a broker of house plans and sell them yourself, directly from your
Web site.

Root Keyword(s) for Brainstorming:

• House plan
• Home plan

Profitable Keywords for Creating Web Pages:

GOOGLE

log cabin home plans hillside home plans prairie style house plans

custom home floor plans house home plans timber frame house plans

log home house plans concrete house plans small cottage house
plans

cottage style home plans house design and plan architect house plans

modular home plans in open floor house plans plans for small
massachusettes inexpensive house

*Note: The top high demand, low competition keywords can change over time, so be sure to enter
the root keyword(s) into Wordtracker to reconfirm, update, and expand the above list.

6.0 FOOD & COOKING
If you’re like me, you’ve probably searched the Internet from time to time looking
for recipes. You may have even wondered if you could make money online by
selling your own cooking secrets.

Well, I can tell you that you don’t have to be Martha Stewart to get lots of people
to purchase your cookbook. Just check out this web site www.chitterlings.com.

The guy who owns this web site reportedly makes over $100,000 per year selling
a cookbook filled with southern soul food recipes.

So, what’s his formula for success? There are probably several factors, but at the
top of the list has to be a product that is perceived as very unique. It also has to
be marketed to a very specific group of people that love this type of cooking.

If you decide to create a cooking web site, follow his example. Make sure that
your niche and ideal customer are well defined. Stay away from creating a
general recipe or cooking site.

7.0 BEAUTY & FASHION
When I performed my research for beauty and fashion business ideas, I really
thought this category would be saturated with Web pages. So, I was pleasantly
surprised to find the following two areas that have lots of room for online
entrepreneurs:

• Hairstyles/haircuts
• Gowns

Whether on- or off- line, beauty and fashion are big business. So, you’d be wise
to give these two business ideas serious consideration.

When it comes to beauty, maintaining a great-looking head of hair is at the top of

the list. The combination of colors, shades, cuts, and styles are endless!

In addition, the combinations can vary according to the occasion – weddings,

proms, even a night on the town. So, you can see how all those surfers could use
some help with new ideas, trends, hair care, and more.

Gowns aren’t as broad a niche as hairstyles, but it’s a great business idea that
should receive solid traffic.

48
7.1 Blueprint 13: Haircuts/Hairstyles

purchase gowns at the lowest prices. Direct them to online suppliers that you
highly recommend.

10.0 How Major Search Engines Work
10.1 Let’s Focus on the Big Dog – GOOGLE!
In all likelihood, Google will be your number one source for search engine traffic.
It’s the largest search engine and is the favored by most Web surfers. So, it pays
for you to know how it works.

First, you’ll get a quick overview of Google and some of its features and then
we’ll move into how to use this engine to your advantage.

Google has a comprehensive and highly developed technology, a straightforward

interface and a wide-ranging array of search tools which enable users to easily
access a variety of information online.

Google users can browse the web and find information in various languages,
retrieve maps, stock quotes and read news. They can use this engine to search
for a long lost friend using the phonebook listings for all US cities and basically
surf the 3 billion odd web pages on the internet!

Google boasts of having world’s largest archive of Usenet messages, dating all
the way back to 1981. Google’s technology can be accessed from any
conventional desktop PC as well as from various wireless platforms such as
WAP and i-mode phones, handheld devices and other such Internet equipped
gadgets.

The web search technology offered by Google is often the technology of choice
of the world’s leading portals and websites. It has also benefited the advertisers
with its unique advertising program that does not hamper the web surfing
experience of its users, but still brings revenues to the advertisers.

10.1.1.Google’s Web Search Technology

When you search for a particular keyword or a phrase, most of the search
engines return a list of pages in order of the number of times the keyword or
phrase appears on the website.

Google web search technology involves the use of its indigenously designed
PageRank Technology and hypertext-matching analysis which makes several
instantaneous calculations undertaken without any human intervention. Google’s
structural design also expands simultaneously as the internet expands.

67
10.1.2 PageRank technology
PageRank technology involves the use of an equation which comprises of
millions of variables to determine the significance of the pages on your web site.

Unlike some other search engines, Google does not calculate links but utilizes
the extensive link structure of the web as an organizational tool. When the link to
a Page, lets say Page B is clicked from a Page A, then that click is attributed as a
vote towards Page B on behalf of Page A.

Google calculates the importance of a page by the number of such ‘votes’ it

receives. Not only that, Google also assesses the importance of the pages that
are involved in the voting process.

The bottom line is that the web pages that are deemed the most important will
achieve the highest rankings in the search engine.

Hypertext-Matching Analysis: Unlike its conventional counterparts, Google is a

search engine which is hypertext-based. This means that it analyzes all the
content on each web page and factors in fonts, subdivisions, and the exact
positions of all terms on the page. Not only that, Google also evaluates the
content of its nearest web pages. This policy of not disregarding any subject
matter pays off in the end and enables Google to return results that are closest to
user queries.

10.1.3 Query-handling – The Google Way

Google has a very simple 3-step procedure in handling a query submitted in its
search box.

1. When the query is submitted and the enter key is pressed, the web
server sends the query to the index servers. Index server is exactly
what its name suggests. It consists of an index much like the index of a
book which displays where the particular page containing the queried
term is located in the entire book.
2. After this, the query proceeds to the doc servers, and these servers
actually retrieve the stored documents. Page descriptions or “snippets”
are then generated to suitably describe each search result.
3. These results are then returned to the user in less than a second!

10.1.4 The Google Dance

Approximately once a month, Google update their index by recalculating the
Pageranks of each of the web pages that they have crawled. The period during
the update is known as the Google dance.

Because of the nature of PageRank, the calculations need to be performed about

40 times and, because the index is so large, the calculations take several days to

68
complete. During this period, the search results fluctuate; sometimes minute-by
minute. It is because of these fluctuations that the term, Google Dance, was
coined. The dance usually takes place sometime during the last third of each
month.

Google has two other servers that can be used for searching. The search results
on them also change during the monthly update and they are part of the Google
dance.

For the rest of the month, fluctuations sometimes occur in the search results, but
they should not be confused with the actual dance. They are due to Google' s
fresh crawl and to what is known "Everflux".

Google has two other searchable servers apart from www.google.com. They are
www2.google.com and www3.google.com. Most of the time, the results on all 3
servers are the same, but during the dance, they are different.

For most of the dance, the rankings that can be seen on www2 and www3 are
the new rankings that will transfer to www when the dance is over. Even though
the calculations are done about 40 times, the final rankings can be seen from
very early on. This is because, during the first few iterations, the calculated
figures merge to being close to their final figures.

You can see this with the Pagerank Calculator by checking the Data box and
performing some calculations. After the first few iterations the search results on
www2 and www3 may still change, but only slightly.

During the dance, the results from www2 and www3 will sometimes show on the
www server, but only briefly. Also, new results on www2 and www3 can
disappear for short periods. At the end of the dance, the results on www will
match those on www2 and www3.

This Google Dance Tool allows you to check your rankings on www, www2 and
www3 and on all 9 datacenters simultaneously.

10.1.5 How to Maximize Google’s Search Features

The “I’m Feeling Lucky” Button

The I'm Feeling Lucky™ search button is recommended when searching for a
highest ranked web page for a particular search. This saves time in searching
for a webpage. You’ll find this button at the point where you enter a search term
at Google.com.

69
The multi-faceted Google Toolbar

The Google Toolbar™ can seamlessly integrate with a user'

s web browser and
be of quick assistance.

Cache me if you can

Google takes a snapshot of each page it examined as it crawls the web and
stores or caches them as a back-up in case the original page is unavailable.
This cached link always displays the page in the same manner as it was indexed
and this is used by Google to match the relevancy of the page to the query
submitted by the user. The "Cached" link will be missing for sites that have not
been indexed, as well as for sites whose owners have requested Google not to
cache their content.

Google Web Search Features

Google offers a variety of special features which helps users to find exactly what
they are looking which is all in addition to providing easy access to more than 3
billion web pages. The following is an overview of its key features:

• Calculator

Google has a built-in calculator function which can be used to calculate

mathematical expressions involving basic arithmetic, more complicated math,
units of measure and conversions, physical constants and even hexadecimal
and binary numbering systems. You can simply enter the expression you' d
like evaluated in the search box and hit the Enter key or click the Google
Search button.

• Dictionary Definitions

When searching about any particular term, if the Google database has a
definition or meaning for the term, then it will be highlighted with an underline
on the results page. This definition is derived in association with a reliable
dictionary source.

• File Types

In addition to HTML files, Google search also supports 12 other formats such
as PDF, Microsoft Office, PostScript, Corel WordPerfect, Lotus 1-2-3, and
others. Additionally, Google also offers the user the ability to "View as HTML",
which allows users to view these files in case the corresponding software is
not installed on the user’s PC. It also eliminates the hazards of opening a
virus-infected document.

70
• News Headlines

While searching for a particular term, if that term is also in any of the current
news, it is displayed as a separate news link on the results page. This is
derived from various news providers who work in association with Google and
who let Google monitor them.

A new offering – Advanced News Search

A new offering from Google - Advanced News Search, allows visitors to scour
headlines by date, location, exact phrases or publication. People can use it
retrieve articles from more than 4,500 news outlets publishing on the Web.
Advanced News Search lets visitors search for headlines using several
parameters. Among other features, people can locate stories that contain an
exact phrase, within the Unites States or abroad, or written by a specific
publisher.

• Similar Pages

The results page also displays a link for ‘similar pages’ which uses the
GoogleScout technology to explore the web for similar pages. This is
particularly helpful if you have hit upon a page which has relevant content, but
you want something similar but more.

• Web Page Translation

This feature is particularly helpful if your search has non-English results.

Google offers a facility to automatically translate a page for you in English.
Currently, Google supports Italian, French, Spanish, German, and
Portuguese languages.

• SafeSearch Filtering

Google provides a SafeSearch option to filter pornographic contents from its

results page. This is especially useful for shared computers which need to be
protected for children surfing the Internet. Google’s technology tries to check
keywords and phrases, URLs and Open Directory categories and eliminate
these from the search results.

10.1.6 Google Services

The following are some of the popular and innovative services offered by Google
and there are always improvisations in it.

71
Google Answers

Google Answers is an interesting cross between ‘online marketplace’ and

probably a ‘virtual classroom’. Those who wish to participate must register with
Google Answers.

Here, the researchers who have considerable expertise in online researching

provide answers to the queries posted by other users for a fee. When a user
posts a question, he or she also needs to mention the price the user is willing to
pay in case the question is answered.

When the question is answered by any user, then the payment is made
accordingly to the user answering the question. Moreover, the questions and the
discussion that ensues will be publicly viewable and other registered users can
also share their opinions and insights.

There is a non-refundable listing fee of $.50 per question plus an additional 'price'
you set for your question that reflects how much you' re willing to pay for an
answer. Three-quarters of your question price goes directly to the Researcher
who answers your question; the remaining 25 percent goes to Google to support
the service.

Google Groups

Google Groups is an online discussion forum and it contains the entire archive of
Usenet discussion groups dating back to 1981.

These discussions cover the full range of human dissertation and present a
fascinating look at evolving viewpoints, debate and advice on every subject from
politics to technology. Users can access all of this information all in a database
that contains more than 800 million posts by using the search feature of Google.

Google’s Image Search

Google offers a wide collection of images from around the web; its
comprehensive database consists of more than 425 million images. All a user
has to do is to enter a query in the image search box, then click on the "Search"
button.

On the results page, by clicking the thumbnail a larger version of the image can
be seen, as well as the web page on which the image is located. By default,
Google's Image Search uses its mature content filter on the initial search by any
user.

72
The filter removes many adult images but it cannot guarantee that all such
content will be filtered out. It is not possible to ensure with 100% accuracy that all
mature content will be removed from image search results using filters.

Google analyzes the text on the page near the image, the image caption and
dozens of other factors which enables it to determine the image content. Google
also utilizes several sophisticated algorithms which make it possible to remove
duplicates and it in turn ensures that the highest quality images are presented
first in the results. Google’s Image search supports all the complex search
strategies like Boolean operators, etc.

Google’s Catalog Search

Google offers a unique service in the form of its Catalog Search. Google’s
Catalog Search has made it easy to find information published in mail-order
catalogs that were not previously available online.

It includes the full content of hundreds of mail-order catalogs selling everything

from industrial adhesives to clothing and home furnishings. Google’s Catalog
Search can help you if you are looking to buy for either yourself or for your
business.

The printed copies of catalogs are scanned and the text portion is converted into
a format which makes it easy for users to search for the catalog. The same
sophisticated algorithm employed by the Google Web Search is then employed
to search for catalogs.

This makes sure that most recent and relevant catalogs are displayed. Google
is not associated with any catalog vendors and is not liable for any misuse of this
service on part of the users.

Froogle

The word ‘froogle’ is a combination of the word ‘frugal’ which means ‘penny-wise’
or ‘economical’ and of course ‘Google’. Froogle is a recent concept put forth by
Google. Google’s spidering software crawls the web looking for information
about products for sale online. It does so by focusing entirely on product search
and applying the power of Google' s search technology to locate stores that sell
items you want and consequently pointing you to that specific store.

Just like the Google Web Search, Froogle also ranks store sites based only on
their relevance to the search terms entered by the users. Google does not accept
payment for placement within their actual search results. Froogle also includes
product information submitted electronically by merchants. Its search results are
automatically generated by Google’s ranking software.

covered above, visit this link… http://www.google.com/intl/en/options/

10.1.7 Submitting Your URL to Google

Google is primarily a fully-automatic search engine with no human-intervention
involved in the search process. It utilizes robots known as ‘spiders’ to crawl the
web on a regular basis for new updates and new websites to be included in the
Google Index.

This robot software follows hyperlinks from site to site. Google does not require
that you should submit your URL to its database for inclusion in the index, as it is
anyway done automatically by the ‘spiders’.

Submission to Google through its free listing program can be done using the Add
URL form available at …

http://www.google.com/addurl.html

Having mentioned that, there is no guarantee that Google would include a web
page submitted to it by either of the free methods. Also, it might take as long as a
month before Google lists your web pages.

Google has advertising program called Adwords that offers you a combination of
paid listing and positioning of your pages in search results. Paid listings in
Google appear above and to the side of its regular results. Google allows a
maximum 5 to 10 web pages from a web site to be submitted per day.

Cloaking

Sometimes, a webmaster might program their server in such a way that it returns
different content to Google than it returns to regular users, which is often done to
misrepresent search engine rankings. This process is referred to as cloaking as it
conceals the actual website and returns distorted webpages to search engines
crawling the site.

This can mislead users about what they' ll find when they click on a search result.
Google highly disapproves of any such practice and might place a ban on the
website which is found guilty of cloaking.

Google Guidelines

Here are some of the important tips and tricks that can be employed while
dealing with Google.

74
Do’s

• A website should have crystal clear hierarchy and links and should
preferably be easy to navigate.
• A site map is required to help the users go around your site and in case
the site map has more than 100 links, then it is advisable to break it into
several pages to avoid clutter.
• Come up with essential and precise keywords and make sure that your
website features relevant and informative content.
• The Google crawler will not recognize text hidden in the images, so when
describing important names, keywords or links; stick with plain text.
• The TITLE and ALT tags should be descriptive and accurate and the
website should have no broken links or incorrect HTML.
• Dynamic pages (the URL consisting of a ‘?’ character) should be kept to a
minimum as not every search engine spider is able to crawl them.
• The robots.txt file on your web server should be current and should not
block the Googlebot crawler. This file tells crawlers which directories can
or cannot be crawled.

Don’ts

• When making a site, do not cheat your users, i.e. those people who will
surf your website. Do not provide them with irrelevant content or present
them with any fraudulent schemes.
• Avoid tricks or link schemes designed to increase your site'
s ranking.
• Do not employ hidden texts or hidden links.
• Google frowns upon websites using cloaking technique. Hence, it is
advisable to avoid that.
• Automated queries should not be sent to Google.
• Avoid stuffing pages with irrelevant words and content. Also don't create
multiple pages, subdomains, or domains with significantly duplicate
content.
• Avoid "doorway" pages created just for search engines or other "cookie
cutter" approaches such as affiliate programs with hardly any original
content.
10.2. Smart Ways to Improve Web Page Rankings
Experts feel that web pages have to be search engine friendly in order to improve
search engine rankings. Having a well designed and relevant web copy is crucial.
This will help search engines easily index your web pages and rank them high.

75
Besides internal page factors including frequency and positioning of relevant
keyword phrases, the leading search engines now suggest the importance of off
the page factors, particularly links from other domains.

Google ranks individual URLs based on which other URLs link to them, which
URLs link to those, and so on. Thus the steps you have to take are:

Choose the terms that you wish to include as the most productive search terms
for your site, terms that you associate with the correct target visitors to your site.

Put those in the search engines and find what pages rank near the top for them.
These top-ranking sites/pages would be on the top of your list, if you needed to
plant links to your site on other pages.

Once you have found the top ranked pages/sites for your chosen search term(s),
you should check what sites or pages link to that site. If you get links from any of
these sites to your target pages, you may be able to dramatically improve your
ranking on Google and other crawler based Search Engines. An easy way to find
out some (but not all) of the links that point to a given site is to enter the following
in Google…

Link:www.compeititorsdomain.com

Note that “competitorsdomain” represents the domain name of the top ranked
site for which you’d like to gather linking information.

If a website has a lot of interlinked pages, then even an obscure page from that
site could be a reasonably effective candidate for having a link to your site. It is
not essential that the link should be on the home page or prominent page of a
popular site.

Creating fake domains and letting those domains point to your site is a trick
thought to be effective for improving page ranking at Google. However Google
claims that this is not true and they are able to spot duplicate domains and
domain scams.

10.2.1 Link Popularity

Your "link popularity" is simply a count of the number of web pages that are
linked to you. Improving your website’s link popularity is absolutely vital for
improving the visibility of your website with regard to Search Engines.

You may want to know your link popularity for two reasons….

The first is that your link popularity will improve your ranking on all crawler search
engines. Search engines have a component called the spider, which crawls from

76
one web page to another through links. Hence, the more web sites linking to your
website, the better are your chances of getting listed through a search engine.

The second reason is that you might want to know which web sites are linked to
you and potentially referring traffic.

Search engines give sites with good inbound and outbound links a higher
ranking. The logic goes that if you provide outbound links to other material you
are providing a valuable service: and, if other sites link to you then you must
have content of value.

10.2.2 Link Analysis vs. Link Popularity

Some sites offer to run comparison of the links to a chosen site vis-à-vis three
other chosen sites. http://linkpop.marketleap.com and
http://www.linkpopularitycheck.com are two such sites where you could submit
your target URL and three other URLs that you wish to have a comparison done.
www.linkpopularity.com is a site that will analyze the link popularity of a chosen
URL in three prominent search engines.

Link analysis is somewhat different than measuring link popularity. While link
popularity is generally used to measure the number of pages that link to a
particular site, link analysis will go beyond this and analyze the popularity of the
pages that link to your pages.

In a way, link analysis is a chain analysis system that accords weighting to every
page that links to the target site, with weights determined by the popularity of
those pages.

Search engines use link analysis in their page-ranking algorithm. Search engines
also try to determine the context of those links, in other words, how closely those
links relate to the search string.

For example if the search string was “toys”, and if there were links from other
sites that either had the word toys within the link or in close proximity of the link,
the ranking algorithm determines that this a higher priority link and ranks the
page, that this is linked to, higher.

As a site owner, you want to seek links from good pages that are related to the
terms you want to be found for. Linking strategy is not a trick as many get rich
quick merchants would have you believe.

Links for the sake of links have no value whatsoever. Indeed, they can damage
your rankings.

77
So forget about link farms and other such nonsense. A small number of inbound
links from great, relevant sites will be much more valuable than many links from
low-traffic, irrelevant sites.

However, you should not become obsessed by link popularity alone. Treat linking
as one important aspect of your Search Engine Optimization strategy.

Decide how much time and effort you are prepared to invest in relation to your
other activities and be disciplined about your approach. Monitor your results and
adapt your strategy as necessary.

10.2.3 Where and How to Seek Reciprocal Linking

Once you have found the candidate sites that have high link popularity and link
quality as seen through link analysis, the next step is to choose those that you
believe may agree to reciprocal linking. (Note: If you don’t want to bother with
doing link analysis, a quick way to find linking candidates is choose from the top
5 or 10 web sites that are displayed when you perform searches in Google using
your best high demand keywords.)

Several sites have a page where they list useful links or relevant links, as a
service to their site visitors. You can locate the email of the company or of the
person who handles link requests for such list pages.

When you make a request for reciprocal linking, approach the target site owner
or webmaster or link request handler by providing your URL and a short
description and explain how providing this link would be a valuable and useful
addition for the benefit of their audience.

The description is important as often that would be what appears in their links
page. Offer them reciprocal linking from your site’s links and resources page.
Better still tell them that you have already provided a reciprocal link to their site.

Build a good links and resources page on your website. Present the links in an
organized manner so that this is useful to your site visitors too. Of course, you do
not want this links page to be amongst the first pages accessed by your visitor,
as this may induce the person to leave your site.

Some webmasters try to build a standalone links page that is totally isolated from
all other pages on their site. This would perhaps provide an URL to the reciprocal
link provider, but in reality it is not a genuine link page at all. Avoid these tactics;
they will not work in the long run.

Finally, not all sites are equal and therefore not all links are equal. A link from a
high traffic industry portal is worth infinitely more that a link from a low-traffic free-
for-all site. Concentrate of giving the search engines what they really want - great

78
content, well-organized, well-published and linked to other relevant material.
Concentrate on that and you will be rewarded.

10.2.4 Inward Linking

Like reciprocal linking, inward links to your web site can be an effective strategy
to increase your website’s visibility to Search Engines. Inward links are links
pointing to your websites from other websites without providing a reciprocal link
from your website.

There are many techniques to improve inward linking. Many of these have
enjoyed success with Search Engines. One of the best and most proven
technique for inward linking is through articles.

You can offer interesting and educative articles for free to other web sites and
they could install them on their sites. The article you create would have a link to
your website. This will allow a spider to crawl through that link and visit you
website.

Other techniques include posting newsletters, white papers, news stories and
press releases to other websites, particularly industry specific and general
portals. The newsletters and press releases would contain a link pointing to your
website, thus, increase its visibility to crawlers.

Affiliate programs also help in improving inward linking. In affiliate schemes, you
provide incentives (usually a commission on the sale of your product or service)
for other websites to become affiliates (i.e. carriers). These affiliates then
generate you direct traffic; the added bonus comes in the form of those inward
links to your site.

Affiliate Programs create powerful alliances between your web site and your
various "affiliate" web sites. Providing affiliate links to your website would
improve your website’s search engine ranking. It makes your website more
visible to crawlers.

10.3 Tips for Designing Web Pages That Get Results

Choosing keywords that are focused and specific

This is an important step in the search engine optimization (SEO) exercise. What
keywords do you need to emphasize and include? How do you choose the most
relevant keywords that will be used by your target audience?

Pose yourself the question: What would my target visitor be looking for and for
which queries I would like to lure him/her to my site? Imagine those queries, as
many of them as you can think.

79
Apply this to all categories of visitors that you are targeting. Then list those
queries and formulate your keywords from those.

Let your creativity develop grammar and synonym variants of these keywords.
The same would apply to descriptions; however while keywords have to match
closely with search strings, descriptions should be drafted to allure the visitor
after he has seen your listing. It should tell the visitor that your site is indeed
offering him best information or outcome for what he is looking.

Select phrases (at least two words), rather than single words, as there would be
too many contenders for single word searches. You are much better off focusing
on specific search keywords and using longer phrases.

Finding top keywords

You may like to know what are the most popular search words and strings, so
that you could choose top keywords related to your own site. Some resources
that help in this are discussed here.

Place your subject term in Overture’s free Search Term Suggestion Tool. The
result will be a list of all search terms related to the word you inserted that were
most popular at Overture.

The list is in the order of popularity. Thus you know what most people are looking
for. Wordtracker has a fee-based service that lets you do the same based on
Meta search engines such as Meta Crawler.

Location of keywords

The location of keywords on your web pages is vital. You may have placed
keywords at only a few locations, but if they are inserted at important positions,
your search engine ranking may be boosted.

The most important position is the Title of the page. Ensure that your keyword is
placed in the Title.

Another proven strategy is to place keywords towards the beginning of the web
page. For instance, inserting keywords in page headlines, other sub-titles, and
introductory paragraphs would certainly help rankings.

Avoid using images or tables at the beginning of the page. This will only shove
keywords down on the web page, and in turn harm your search engine rankings.

80
Meta tags and keywords

While Meta tags are not the complete answer to the question of "How do I
improve my search engine ranking?” they can help with some search engines.
Since there are millions of pages with Meta tags, you can add all the pages you
want and still not control a sizeable percentage of the pages on the World Wide
Web.

What are Meta tags? They are information inserted into the "head" area of your
web pages. Other than the title tag, information in the head area of your web
pages is not seen by those viewing your pages in browsers.

Instead, Meta information in this area is used to communicate information that a

human visitor may not be concerned with. Meta tags, for example, can tell a
browser what "character set" to use or whether a web page has self-rated itself in
terms of adult content.

Meta tags may help you with some search engines, so you’ll want to consider
adding them to every page you create. On the other hand, you can find many
highly ranked web pages without Meta tags. For example, Meta tags have no
effect on how humans will view your pages and enter your information into
directories like Yahoo.

Tags that do matter

• Titles

The TITLE tag is an important one for search engines like Google, as that is
often the first one indexed and it is given higher weighting in the relevance
rankings. You have to pay attention to this tag.

Keep it short (lower than 40 characters) and let the tag have material relevant to
the keywords used during search. As an example, if you had stuffed your
Company Name as the TITLE tag, it would not help.

The visitor that you want to attract is unlikely to be looking for your Company
name in the search string. Think creatively as to what keywords people would
use if they were looking for goods or services that your site offers.

• Keywords and Description

Two Meta tags that are important are KEYWORDS and DESCRIPTION. You
have to be very careful about how these are developed and positioned.

Frequency and location of the keyword that is being searched are important
criteria that determine relevance and hence page ranking. The search engine

81
would generally consider the page more relevant if the keyword that is being
sought is in the TITLE tag or is in the KEYWORDS tag near the top of the page.

Similarly if the sought after keyword is found being repeated in the page, it may
give the impression that this is a more relevant page and improve ranking.

There is a caveat, though. The above is only a general rule that has been often
followed by many search engines, but then there are many variants to it.

Several players in the SEO industry have tried to proclaim that this is the gospel
truth and hence it has spawned a large number of experts that suggest and
resort to keyword stuffing and spamming (repeating long strings of keywords).

The result can often be just the opposite. Some search engines penalize pages
that have keyword spamming. Some will just ignore these pages. Some engines
also do not read Meta tags.

The intelligent method today is to stay away from spamming and to use tags
judiciously. Blend your technique to attain the right frequency and location, but
stay away from any excess or spamming.

You can provide an in-depth list of words and phrases in the KEYWORD Meta
tag. These words should have some relevance to the specific page or, at least, to
your web site. While you can vary the case of the keywords, you’ll want to
concentrate on the lower case because over 90% of the searches either use
lower case or are conducted on search engines that are not case sensitive.

These keywords should contain variations on the same theme. If your site was
about gardening, you could use garden, gardening, home and garden, home
gardening, vegetable garden, and herb garden. These are all words that might be
used in searches for information that your site might provide.

The keywords Meta tag is not intended to replace the actual text on your website.
This tag is simply to aid the spider in collecting accurate information about your
web pages.

The DESCRIPTION tag is used by search engines for the page summary that is
displayed on the results page. This summary is what the visitor will read and
decide whether he/she wishes to enter your site.

If the description is just full of repeated keywords, it won’t do you any good, even
if your page is ranked high. You still do not have a visitor. May be you have put
off a visitor.

82
• Meta Robots Tag

This is probably the only other prominent Meta tag. This is a very peculiar tag in
the sense that it indicates what web pages should not be indexed by Search
Engines. The Robots tag is inserted in between the header tags. An example of
the Robots Tag is given below:

<HEAD>

<TITLE>This page should be kept out of Search Engine listings</TITLE>

<META NAME=”ROBOTS” CONTENT=”NOINDEX”>

</HEAD>

By default, a crawler will try to index all your web pages and will try to follow links
from one page to another. This can be prevented by using the Robots Tag.

Most major search engines support the Meta robots tag. The Meta robots tag
also has some extensions offered by particular search engines to prevent
indexing of multimedia content.

There are other Meta tags apart from the ones explored above but most of them
are simply ignored by almost all search engines.

To sum up, some search engines will give you a boost if you have Meta tags. But
don't expect that to necessarily be enough to put you in the top ten.

Meta tags are mainly a design element you can tap into, a crutch for helping
information-poor pages better be acknowledged by the search engines.

Making keywords relevant and consistent

Positioning Meta tags and keywords into web pages for better ranking should not
be confused with spamming. Whatever you do, avoid spamming and keyword
stuffing.

Search Engines have mechanisms that can spot spamming and as a result
ignore such web pages. The key is to insert just “enough” keywords into the web
page so as to make the content relevant.

Keywords have to be consistent with the entire content of the web page. In other
words, do not insert non – relevant keywords just for the sake of improving page
rankings.

83
Many webmasters believe that adding more graphics to a web page would make
it more attractive. This is a misconception. A web page should be rich with HTML
text rather than graphics. This makes the site more relevant as Search Engines
can easily scan text.

Stemming and other word forms

Search engines often look for variants of words from a stem and this is referred
to as stemming. Thus ‘play’ can also lead to a search for ‘plays’ or ‘playing’ or
‘players’. Similarly singular and plural forms of words and case can lead to
different results for some search engines.

Some advisers suggest that capitalization is a better bet in choosing keywords.

However, the wiser counsel is that these variants do not make that great a
difference and one should prefer lowercase. Most searches are made in
lowercase. Moreover, many search engines are not case-sensitive.

10.4. Improve Link Popularity and Get Free Traffic By Writing

Articles
Writing articles is one of the easiest and most effective ways of generating free
traffic to your web site, getting free advertising, and improving your site’s link
popularity.

So without further ado, let’s get into it and learn all about using articles to
generate free traffic...

Now let’s get down the root of your article. In this section, this is what we are
going to cover:

1) Determine the purpose of your article

2) Creating a compelling article heading
3) How to make your article interesting enough so they click on your resource link
4) How to write your article quickly and make it a viral marketing machine
5) How to spit and polish your article so it looks like you'
re a professional writer

10.4.1 Determine the Purpose of Your Article

This might sound stupid, but if you don't know what you want your readers to do
when they finish reading your article, how will they know what to do?

Before I get too far into writing this, there is one thing you must do before you put
pen to paper so to speak.

84
FORGET EVERYTHING YOU LEARNED ABOUT WRITING IN SCHOOL!

It doesn' t apply to article writing on the Internet. The purpose of writing articles is
to get a response and that sometimes means using unconventional methods of
writing. If you can' t handle that your writing my look like it was written in the dark
in some sports (maybe a bit harsh) and you' re neurotic about it, forget writing on
the Internet altogether.

This is meatball writing. We get straight to the point and give the readers all the
information in less then 700 words.

Now back to determining the purpose of your article. Here are the usual options
that the reader has…

1) Visit your website link in the resource box

This is probably the most common response people seem to go to, even if it is
the wrong one. People are so fixated with wanting their readers to go to their
websites and buy straight away.

Tell me something, how many strangers on the Internet have you brought
something from because they just told you a great story? None right?

You have to preheat (or presell your readers) the oven before you can ask for
their credit card details.

Sending your readers to your website will usually result in a lower sales
percentage straight off the bat. That is of course if you are selling them anything
at all.

If you were selling them something, the best bet would be to send them straight
to your newsletter signup link in your resource box, or even better yet, a free 5
day course via email, which I will talk about in a minute.

But if you are sure you want to send them to your website, the best way to do
that is to tell your readers (in your article) that if you go to your website (in your
resource box), there is a free gift (of value) they can get, just by visiting your site.

Make sure if you do this, it'

s not a blatant plug for a product and the gift is of real
value, or very few publishers will publish your article, and fewer readers will
respond to you in the future.

No one likes being sold straight off the bat, and by giving them a free gift, or
getting them to give you their email address some way is the best way to go.

85
2) Visit an affiliate link

This one is quite tricky. For starters, some publishers don' t allow you to put
affiliate program links in your article at all, and if you do, they have to be
completely in context and it must be one brilliant article, but that' s not a problem.

You can of course put an affiliate link in your resource box, which would be
allowed straight away.

However, if you want your affiliate links in your article here are a few tips.

1) Make sure they add value to your article and are not just blatant plugs.
2) Make sure your article is informative and to the point
3) Give plenty of free information away at your website and or offer a free course
4) Write a brilliant article!

3) Subscribe to your mailing list

This is one of the better options? Why, because when they sign up for your
mailing list, they are giving you permission to contact them via email on a regular
basis.

It would be very hard to announce your mailing list in context of the article, as it
would come off as a blatant plug, so the best bet would be to include your
subscribe email address in your resource box.

Don't make them go to a website and subscribe, this will cut your lead
percentage nearly in half. If at all possible, all your readers should have to do is
send a blank email to your autoresponder/mailing list email address and
subscribe from there.

4) Subscribe to your free course

This is an awesome way to really maximize your articles. Why?

Here'
s why!

1) People will give you their email address just like they are joining your
newsletter
2) They are in the buying mood straight away
3) You get to give them a sales message at the end of your free 5-day course
and it won't look like a blatant plug
4) You can offer them more free courses for years to come

86
5) Just do it!

With a free 5-day course, you are really getting to know your readers better and
you are giving them the chance to read more information from you straight away.

A free course is just really 5 or so articles put together with an autoresponder and
sent out over a period of days.

Just like with the mailing list, put your free course link (not a website address) in
your resource box.

5) Refer your article to others

If you want your readers to refer your articles to other people, here is what you
do.

(This is a good idea if you have affiliate links in your article)

You send them to a website, with a refer a friend script. This website also has
your previous articles on there as well in an easy to use site. You don't need
fancy graphics or flash animation, just make it easy to navigate.

As I was saying, send them to a page with a refer a friend script on it, and once
they do that, give them a free bonus, like the chance to sign up for a free 5 day
course you are offering!

You see how many possibilities there are.

By giving them something in return with value, like a free 5-day course, you get
them to refer your article/website to their friends.

6) Contact you personally

If you want people to contact you personally, don' t make them dig through a
website to find your contact details. At the very least, put your email address in
your resource box, if not your business phone number.

7) Do nothing

Don't be disheartened if a lot of people don' t visit your website or take any action
from your article, they could just be freebie seekers looking for free information
and are not willing to take action no matter how good your information is or would
be.

The secret to article writing is volume. The more articles you have out there
being passed around, the more traffic you will end up getting.

87
8) Flame you

There are some idiots, and yes they are idiots, who would rather send nasty
emails to you instead of giving constructive criticism.

If you are one of these people, find a better hobby, because it can really hurt a
person’s feelings. But never get in a verbal fight with these people at all costs.

10.4.2 Create a Compelling Article Heading

Here is an article by popular Internet marketer, Terry Dean, on the importance of
headings. While it tends to be written more for ad copy, a heading is vitally
important to an article:

How To Increase Response Rates 1800% by Tomorrow Afternoon

By: Terry Dean

This section you could call the make-it or break-it section. Of all parts of your
advertising, the Headline is absolutely the most important piece to the puzzle.

If you don'
t write a good headline, you might as well get out of advertising right
now. The bad news is that You cannot make money in business without good
headlines. The good news is anyone can write KILLER headines...Yes, I said
anyone. That means YOU!

Some copywriters would like you to think that you have to have some kind of
special skill or creativity to writing killer headlines. Guess what, there is not. You
don'
t have to have a special gene for creative headline writing.

What those same copywriters don' t tell you is that they wrote 10, 20, 50, 100, or
more headlines for that specific piece BEFORE they chose the KILLER headline.
It isn'
t massive creativity that creates winning headlines. It is the right knowledge
and hard work.

This section will give you the KNOWLEDGE you need to write killer headlines,
but the WORK is up to you. I have NEVER heard of anyone coming up with the
BEST headline on the first try. It takes Brainstorming dozens of headline ideas
until you are coming up with the WINNER!

It is worth the work of writing KILLER headlines, because One headline has been
known to out produce another headline by as much as 1800%. That is with no
change in the body of the letter at all! That means that a promotion which made
$1,000 could have made as much as $18,000 just by changing the headline!
Suddenly, a promotion which could have been unsuccessful NOW is a MEGA

88
MONEY Maker!

I don't think that I could emphasize the importance of writing WINNING headlines
enough. Without a headline, your sales letter is doomed to failure even before it
starts...If you are not willing to put forth the effort of doing an effective one, then
you might as well quit your business now and go work at McDonald' s. You will
never make more than minimum wage anyhow without good headlines!

If I was going to give you a schedule for writing your sales letter, it would look like
this. Spend 10% of your time doing research. Spend 40% of your time on the
offer, benefits, bullets, and order form. Spend 50% of your time on the headline.
That is how important the headline is to your success in marketing.

Over 5 times as many people will read your headline as will read your sales
letter. It has to catch the attention of your targeted prospect and make them read
the rest of the letter. If your headline is weak, hardly anyone will ever even SEE
your sales letter, much less purchase from it.

If you are going to spend time and money on advertising, you need to make sure
that people are at least going to READ your sales letter. The key to this is an
effective headline. Without it, you will not get 99% of the people who see your ad
to even read it.

Writing headlines is not a magical art for the select few. It is a skill that you will
learn as you practice and do your work on each advertising piece you create.
Here are a few of the basic rules of writing KILLER headlines:

It has to absolutely stop your target prospect in their tracks and force them to
read the ad! It must answer the question "What' s In It for Me" by giving your #1
Benefit Right Up Front! It has to set the tone for the whole rest of the ad and your
offer!

It is the leader for your entire ad and it will set the tone and direction for your ad.
You could easily say that it is 50% of your ad all by itself. Let' s talk about each of
those aspects in detail:

#1 - It has to Grab Your Targeted Prospect'

s Attention

Too many ads are written for any old reader. By that, I mean that they aren' t
trying to focus on anyone specifically. They are trying to sell anyone their
product. When writing ads, you have to TARGET your prospects.

You have to decide exactly who your #1 customer will be. That is part of the
reason for the Research that you need to do first. You had to find out who and
why people were buying your product. Your sales letter needs to be written as
though it was for ONE specific person.

89
The best ads and sales letters are always the ones which seem as though they
were written JUST for you. When you read them, you feel as though they wrote it
knowing your every thought and plan. It is your letter!

When a sales letter is written like that, it will sell like wildfire when introduced to
it'
s specific target audience. For example, if you are selling a book about child
care, you may start a headline like this:

"Attention All Frustrated and Worn Out Parents..."

Or

"PARENTS..."

You could sell a weight loss product with a headline that starts with:

"If You Want to Lose 30 pounds in 30 days..."

If you are selling computers, you might start with:

"Are You Looking for a Computer At Half the Cost?..."

With those kinds of examples, we call out the audience right there and then.
Those who are looking for computers will continue to read on. Those who don' t
want a computer won' t. You have captured your target market' s attention.

What I like to do is to put this type of message on the top of the sales letter in
smaller letters with the main headline underneath of it. This has worked best for
me in the past. You will notice EVERY ONE of my sale letters is done in this
format. This way I can grab my target market' s attention upfront and then blast
them with the offer in larger letters. I advise you to do the same in your
advertising.

#2 - "What'
s In It For Me"

All of your advertising is based on those 5 little words. The headline is no

exception. Your prospect will ask this question of your headline, your letter, your
offer, and your order form. You have to give it to them throughout the letter,
especially in the headline. If they don'
t receive it here, they will NEVER read the
rest of your letter.

When you made your list of benefits, which one stands out to your prospects the
most by your research? This should become a part of your headline along with
your USP (Unique Selling Position) if possible. Using this type of headline is the
beginning of a KILLER ad copy. You want to overwhelm your prospects with

90
benefits. There is no better place to start than in the headlines.

#3 - It should set the tone of the ad and the offer!

Your headline is a type of introduction of your upcoming killer copy. It needs to

both grab the attention of your prospects and then get them ready to read the ad.
You could say that the headline is the "Ad for the Ad."

The headline' s main purpose is to SELL the prospect on the idea of reading the
entire sales letter. Whenever you write a headline, keep that in mind. People' s
time is precious and if you want them to take time out of their day to read your
sales piece, then you better have something good to say in the very beginning.
Otherwise, you have lost them forever!

10.4.3 How to Make Your Article Interesting

The secret to making your article interesting is to give away enough information
to solve one part of the problem, but to leave the other part unsolved so they
want more information. Let me explain:

If I was just beginning to learn how to promote affiliate programs, I would be after
information on how to create a web site that sells and of course how to advertise
that web site.

Now if I was writing an article and I had a product to sell on affiliate programs, I
would write an article on how to create a site that sells, but leave out the part
about advertising your site.

Of course people will need this information if they want to succeed, so more then
likely, if your resource box is compelling, they will click on your link to your
website.

10.4.4 How to Write Your Article Quickly

To write your article, you have to know where you want the article to go. For
instance, are you planning on making this a series of articles that link together?

You must determine the outcome for your article before you can write it.

Now, writing your article isn'

t that hard at all.

You should try and make your article at least 500 words, and no more than 700.

91
To do this, create an outline for the article sections you are going to cover. Then,
write 100 to 150 words for each section. For example.

If I was writing an article on getting more traffic to your web site on a budget, I
would first create an outline with seven sections…something like this:

1. Introduction to budget advertising

2. How to write articles that get publishing every time
3. Joint venturing for huge profits
4. Getting all the free links you can
5. Search engine ranking tactics that work
6. Using mp3' s to distribute your message
7. Making the most of your budget traffic

Then I would write 100 - 150 words on each section and there is your rough copy
article, ready to go, it'
s that simple.

When writing your article, you must keep in mind that people don' t like reading
big words they don' t understand. Imagine you are trying to write to an 8th grade
level, as it has been proven that people like to read at this level.

Here is a great article on this very subject, along with an insider tip for tapping
into an outstanding source of FREE publicity for your business.

By Kevin Nunley

Everyone likes to buy from an expert. Shopping for a computer? A sales person
who knows computers inside and out makes us feel confident about her
recommendations.

Planning to buy stocks? You likely look for a broker who has Wall Street down
pat.

Here is an effective way to make yourself one of the leading experts in your
industry. Write your own how-to articles.

Prospects and clients will read your articles, appreciate the good information you
have to share, and look to you as an expert who can help them.

You don' t have to be the next great novelist. Simply write a page of instructions
that tells someone else how to do something. It can be information you learned
on the job or advice you picked up in books and conversations. Customers buy
because they have a problem they need solved. When you appear as a helpful
expert with lots of answers, you' re half-way to a sale.

92
Newspapers, magazines, e-zines, and industry newsletters all need a steady
stream of good informative articles. It is easier to get your articles into smaller
publications that closely target your best customers. Often these smaller e-zines
and newsletters draw better response than some of the big glossy national
magazines.

START WITH THIS FORMULA

Articles are easy to write when you use this simple pattern. I have given this
formula to classes of college freshmen. Everyone in the class is able to use it to
write professional quality articles.

1. Start by pointing out a problem your reader has. I could have started this
article: "Spending lots of money on advertising and still not getting the results you
want?"

2. Then make your reader' s problem seem worse. Point out the ways this
problem can impact their business, life, and happiness. "Your ads bring in only
temporary response. Without an effective and affordable way to get the word out
on your business, you may be closing your doors before the year is over."

3. Next suggest one to five ways the reader can solve the problem or make the
situation better. "One simple way to get lots of new prospects and customers is to
write articles for trade publications in your industry." I could go on to explain how
to write an article (as I'
m doing now).

4. End your article with a paragraph or two that reviews your most important
points. Wrap up with a positive spin that paints a bright picture for your reader.

"Many entrepreneurs and professionals use their articles to launch successful

national careers earning healthy six figure incomes. By following these easy
steps, you can become a widely-respected exert in your field and give your
business a big boost."

5. Finally, include your contact info in a final paragraph at the end. Now that
readers are impressed by your good ideas, they will want to contact you to pay
for more information, services, or products. Many publications will allow you to
include four to six lines that provide your contact information and even a plug
your latest product or service. Check the end of this article for my "resource box."

Most e-zines like articles a page or two long (200 to 400 words). Magazines
increasingly want articles that fill just one of their pages (900 words).

Keep your sentences and paragraphs short. Avoid sentences that require lots of
commas. The idea is to write in a style that is clear and easy-to-understand for a

93
reader that is in a hurry. I think writing simply is also easier. How-to articles don'
t
have to be fancy.

"BUT I DON'
T LIKE TO WRITE"

A friend often reminds me that I like to write, but most people, including herself,
hate to write. "Everything you type looks wrong and an hour later you haven' t
gotten anywhere," she says.

Many of us don't have time to write or don'

t feel it is one of our strengths. No
problem. You can get a writer to do the work for you or hire an editor to polish the
words you have written.

A fellow writer who ghostwrites books for other people confided many well-known
business writers don' t do their own writing. Bill Gates has several good books,
but all were written for him by professional writers. He probably doesn' t have time
to sit down to write 200 pages.

Check with your local library for a list of writing clubs in your area. A quick look
around my town turned up groups of non-fiction writers, technical writers, even a
group of successful romance novelists. These are fertile sources of expert writers
and editors, many who work for low prices.

Also approach English teachers, journalists, do a search for writers on the

Internet, and ask people who write articles you like. Give the writer the general
idea for your article and some information to draw from. Then let them use their
creativity and taste to write the article.

SUBMIT YOUR ARTICLE TO EDITORS.

E-zines are in constant need of fresh articles. Submission procedures are

informal. Many welcome unsolicited articles. Simply e-mail the editor an article
with a short personal note. You may find it best to first write the editor for
permission to send your article.

Gary Christensen has compiled a big list of editors looking for articles at:

http://www.site-city.com/members/e-zine-master Kate Schultz' s

EzineArticles.com will distribute your article to a big list of editors.

Most magazines have specific submission rules they want you to follow. Some
want you to pitch your article idea in advance via a query letter. Others invite
writers to submit articles on certain topics that will be included in future issues.
Check magazine web sites for submission guidelines.

Once an editor discovers you can supply them with good articles month after

94
month, you can parlay your articles into a regular column.

Now here comes the enthusiastic wrap-up:

In a complicated world where every problem seems to require an expert, lots of

new customers will respond to the useful information you provide. Write your own
articles to make yourself an expert in your field. Don'
t miss your chance to tap
into this powerful no-cost form of marketing.

Kevin Nunley provides marketing advice and copy writing for businesses and
organizations. Read all his money-saving marketing tips at http://DrNunley.com.

There are, however, a few things Dr Nunley didn'

t touch on enough in the above
article. Those were:

1) Creating a compelling resource box

The resource box is your little reward for writing your article. This is where you
get to tell your readers what exactly you are offering.

In your resource box, you should put the following:

* Your full name

* A bit about yourself
* Your website url
* Your subscribe link to your autoresponder
* And a little bit about why they should take action by either visiting your site, or
subscribing to your autoresponder

Remember, you usually only have 3, 4 or 5 lines to do all this, so make it brief.

2) Taking your article viral

This is really a simple step and all it involves is 2 things

A) A little tweak in your resource box

B) A little help from the people who publish your article

If you want people to give away your article to others, all you have to do is ask. If
you want your readers to refer your article to others, tell them so in your resource
box.

If you want publishers to do the same, why not ask them to give your article to
their publishing friends.

95
You can do this by telling them that they will get your article first over anyone
else, ensuring you get your article published all the time, and ensuring the
publisher gets fresh never seen before content.

You could also give them access to your product (if you are selling one) for the
rights to a list of their publisher friends.

10.4.5 How to Tweak Your Article So That It Looks Like You're a

Professional Writer
The number 1 reason why most articles don' t get published (behind not following
posting guidelines) is the article is full of spelling errors.

Just because I said you don' t have to worry so much about correct grammar in
your article, it doesn'
t mean you can slack off and not proof read and spell check
your work.

Even if you don' t have a spell checker program on your computer, there are
plenty of free web based ones, such as...

http://www.spellcheck.net/
You will also want to make sure your article flows properly and makes perfect
sense. I know sometimes I write one word but mean another. Like put instead of
but, etc....

You might want to print it out and read it aloud a few times, or even get a few
other people to do the same. This is also a good time to see if you' ve covered
everything you've wanted to cover and you’re not leaving anything out the reader
might need to know.

There is nothing worse then an article that either doesn' t make sense, or leaves
so much information out due to the fear of giving too much away, that it' s
practically blank and full of fluff no one is interested in.

10.4.6 How to Get Your Articles “Out There”

Before you send out any articles to anyone, you must read their guidelines fully!
Failure to follow the set guidelines for posting/submitting your article usually ends
with straight out rejection.

Most people will want the following.

1) Article 500 to 700 words in length -

Put the exact amount of words there are in the email to the ezine publisher/article
announcement list.

2) No spelling errors

96
This is as simple as doing a spell check

3) Complete contact details of yourself and a short synopsis of your article

What this means is that when you send an email to say an ezine editor, you
include a brief introduction about yourself, your contact information if needed and
a short run down of your article. Anyone else but the ezine publisher or article
announcement owner doesn' t see this.

4) Word wrap

You will want to wrap your article to 65 characters for each line. What this means
is that every line of your article has 65 characters or less in it. This is important
for margins in email.

5) Article in the body of your email

Never send your article as an attachment in an email. Most people don' t open
attachments for the fear of viruses, so send all articles only in the body of the
email. This is a big stumbling block for newbie writers.

But the best advice I can give you is to follow any guidelines set to the "T". If you
are unsure, ask someone.

So what should my email look like to any publisher?

Here are a couple of examples.

"Please consider this article for your website or ezine.

10.4.7 Send Your Articles Out To Thousands

Here are some of the best resources anywhere on the Internet to post your
articles.

These are sources looking for articles to publish in ezines:

<http://www.published.com>
<http://www.ezine-dir.com>
<http://www.zinos.com>
<http://www.topezineads.com>
<http://www.directoryofezines.com> - The best, but it'
s not free
<http://www.ezinesplus.com>
<http://www.ezinesearch.com>

Now, not everyone of the mailing lists you find will accept articles, and not every
ezine directory will tell you who does and who doesn' t accept articles, so it will be
a bit of a process in finding out which ones do and don' t.

Make sure you write down all the details of who you submit your articles to and
make a directory, so you know where to send them next time.

Next, here a few article announcement sites:

10.4.8 Another Idea for Getting Lots Of Sites To Link To Your Website
Using Articles
Quality information is the beehive of any good website. If you have quality
information, it really is simple to get quality traffic. To do this we are going to
target web sites that are on the same topic as your website and search engine
ranking. The two really go hand in hand.

What we want to do, is to get as many people linking to our site as possible, as

98
this will increase your search engine ranking ten fold. To do this, we need to find
hundreds of possible link partners for you to ask a link from. This is called
reciprocal linking.

So how can you start getting hundreds of sites linking to you?

On your website, we are going to create a section with all your articles you've
created and every time you create a new article, you will put it up there as well.

If you'
re not sure what I mean, have a look at an example.

http://www.bizpromo.com/free

This site is run by one of the best-known marketers on the Internet, Terry Dean.
He has nearly 100 articles on his site, that he allows people to steal and put on
their website, or even link to his site.

He has well over 500 people linking to his website! That'

s not counting the
amount of people who use his article on their websites and in their ezines.

You can see exactly where his traffic is coming from, by visiting his Alexa rating
page at

http://www.alexa.com/data/details?url=www.bizpromo.com

(If you want to check any other site, just put in a new url at the end of that
address)

With this site, I can see roughly how much traffic he is getting, how many people
are linking to him, who is linking to him, and other sites his visitors were
interested in.

Do you think this is helpful?

You better believe it.

If you happen to have a site on Internet Marketing, you can now use his
information to find possible link partners yourself. Of course you can do this for
any topic. Just find a website in your field that'
s very popular and you can see
exactly where some of their traffic is coming from.

All you have to do now, is contact these people, telling them you have a new web
site and you would like to swap links with them.

You can also tell them that the free articles on the site can be used by them as
long as they keep your resource box at the end of the article, and if you happen

99
to have an affiliate program, let them put their affiliate link for your product in the
byline for extra incentive.

To find the most link partners, do the above for hundreds of sites, and write down
all possible sites that you might like a link from.

10.5 Introduction to Affiliate Programs and Residual Income

Affiliate Programs
So what are affiliate programs and how can you earn a constant monthly income
with them? Well, we' re do I get started.

Affiliate programs are a great way to get started marketing online. In essence
affiliate programs or associate programs are revenue sharing arrangements
where companies (merchants) pay webmasters commissions for sending them
customers.

You are paid a commission if the person buys a product or service, (Pay Per
Sale - Most Popular Option), clicks on an affiliate link (Pay Per Click - Less
popular due to fraud) or simply fills out a form (Pay Per Lead - Also Very
Popular).

Basically affiliate programs are programs that enable you to sell other peoples’
products for a percentage of the sale. They are also a very hot topic at the
moment. To see a comprehensive list of affiliate programs you can join, visit
http://www.AssociatePrograms.com or http://www.cj.com. You can virtually sell
anything online now thanks to affiliate programs.

But one of the most popular type of affiliate programs now are the ones that pay
you monthly! These are called residual income affiliate programs.

Residual income affiliate programs pay you a certain amount each month for
every customer you send to them, that stays on with their service, whether that
be webhosting, online dating or membership sites.

Let me explain the power of these types of programs. With regular affiliate
programs, you get paid a once off sum for the sale you produce, and afterwhile
you tend to run out of buying customers, so you have to quickly move on to
another affiliate program to keep trying to make a monthly wage.

Don’t get me wrong, regular affiliate programs are still a great way to make
money online if you don’t want the hassle or hard work of owning and developing
your own product.

However, with residual income affiliate programs, if you get a customer to sign
up, and they use the merchant’s service for say 6 months, you get paid a

100
percentage of the sale for 6 months. Let'
s say you sold a webhosting account
and for every sale you get $10.

Not a lot, but considering the customer is staying for 6 months, you just made
$60 from that customer, not just the initial $10 sale, and the best thing is,
services like these are normally necessities. For example, every web site must
have web hosting, right?

So by selling services people need, it makes your job a heck of allot easier that'
s
for sure.

So why do many affiliates fail to make any real money?

Here are the main reasons.

1. They simply give up.

Affiliate programs are hard. Don' t take it any other way. Making money with
affiliate programs can be a pain in the butt, but it can also be the most rewarding
thing in the world.

You can' t give up, nay, YOU MUST NOT GIVE UP. Keep plugging away until you
find something that works, because it will one day and if you follow my advice,
that day will be soon.

If you do nothing, you get nothing, so everyday, get out there and promote,
promote, promote. (No spamming please) Here' s a phrase that I read everyday,
and I believe it has helped me more then anything. Get ready....

"What would you do tomorrow if you knew you could not fail?"

Since most affiliate programs are free to join, you will notice you will have a lot of
competition. Don' t let that scare you off, as 99% of them won' t make 1 sale and
probably .5% of will make good money from that one affiliate program, and most
of the time, it'
s not the merchants fault they are not making money, only their
own.

But follow the plan below and you’ll see your affiliate income rise.

2. The information they are reading is incorrect.

You get a lot of information on the net, most of it free. But no one checks the
quality of that information do they? That's right, without buying manuals and
reading and more importantly, experimenting, you will get nowhere.

101
If you have a belief that this business will cost you nothing to get started, then
you are sadly mistaken my friend.

Like any business, advertising costs money, setup costs money. Affiliate
programs are a business and there are a lot of people making $5,000 to $25,000
a month with them.

Here' s a tip. Treat your affiliate program business like any other business you
would start. It requires time and money. You can' t expect to make good money
with affiliate programs with out being set up to succeed.

10.5.1 A Great Technique for Affiliate Program Success

There are hundreds, even thousands of ways to make money with affiliate
programs, so don't think this method is the only way, but I believe it'
s one of the
best!

We will be mainly focusing on residual income affiliate programs, i.e., affiliate

programs that pay you monthly.

But let me tell you about one of the most successful ways to make money with
affiliate programs.

Email marketing and lead generation. It sounds complicated I know, but it'
s not.

The whole aim of affiliate marketing should be collecting email addresses. Unless
you know how to drive millions of people to a web site, you will need to collect
email addresses. You will need your own permission based opt in mailing list.

Let me explain.

An opt in mailing list is where people sign up for your newsletter and in exchange
they give you their email address so you can contact them when you have more
information or any offers you want to tell them about.

The difference between this and spam is, these people request your information,
you just don'
t go and get email addresses from all over the place. I'
m sure you
are on some sort of newsletter or ezine list, right?

What I will be showing you is how to create a free 5 day email course that
promotes an affiliate program that you've joined. Then you will continually follow
up these prospects until they buy, then you sell them higher priced products.

You will be giving them free information in exchange for their email address and
if they like the information you'
ve given them, they will buy the product you are
promoting via your free 5 day course.

102
Here are the steps you have to follow to make this work.

1. Find a topic your interested in.

2. Find a few residual income affiliate programs that fit into that category and join
them

3. Set up your web site, with an email subscribe form and free articles

4. Create your free 5 day course to send via your autoresponder

5. Write your own ezine ad copy for your free course

6. Advertise your web site via search engines and reciprocal linking

7. Advertise your free course via ezine advertising, and other marketing methods

8. Backend your prospects and customers until they reach their money peak.

9. Create another free course and start all over again

The tools you are going to need are:

* An unlimited accounts autoresponder

* Domain name
* Web hosting
* Html editor
* FTP program
* Excel or some other sort of database program
* Email program

If you’re going to be working from home, I suggest you create a little office area
for yourself. There is nothing worse then being interrupted constantly when
you’re trying to work. And believe me you will be if you don't designate an area
for yourself.

Another word of wisdom is to get an extremely comfortable chair, as you’re going

to be sitting for a few hours a day. You will also have to make sure you have
adequate lighting and your space feels comfortable and not too cramped up.

This really is important. Treat it like a real business and you will get real results.

The aim of this whole process is to become a SUPER AFFILIATE. My definition

of a super affiliate is some one who earns over $4000 a month solely with affiliate
programs. However, more important than the money (Ok, maybe not more
important) is how they make the money. If they have to work 80 hours a week to

103
earn that kind of money, what'
s the point?

The whole point of working from home is to spend time with loved ones and
relax!

That's why promoting affiliate programs that pay you monthly, whether you do
anything at all, is one of the absolute best ways to make money on the Internet!

So you see the whole process is as follows.

1. Advertise your free 5 day course via an autoresponder.

2. With those leads generated, advertise a residual income affiliate program in

your 5 day course.

3. Back end your prospects with even more affiliate programs. Just because the
5 day course is finished, it doesn'
t mean you can't contact them with other offers.
You will eventually work your way up to where some customers will continually
buy from you. Let' s say your advertising a membership site about affiliate
programs in your free 5 day course.

These affiliates will also need down the track, web hosting, autoresponders,
domain names, other marketing courses and so on. Your aim is to give one
market everything they need to succeed.

4. Start over again and create another free course on a totally different subject.

10.5.2 Selecting the Right Affiliate Programs for You

First, we have to find the right topic for you and see if that topic has any good
residual affiliate programs to join.

Looking for something that is going to pay you over $10 per month. Remember:
We’re talking about subscription type services.

So where should you begin to look? This is crucial to what topic you choose to
start your affiliate empire on.

Currently there are not a lot of affiliate programs that pay you monthly, so you are
somewhat limited by that, but there is a great directory run by Allan Gardyne at
http://www.lifetimecommissions.com that lists affiliate programs that pay you for
life. It'
s a great site.

In no way do you have to choose Internet Marketing related programs. You could
choose online dating, health and beauty, education, even web hosting and more!

104
Web hosting is great because everyone with a web site needs web hosting for
their site to function, therefore, why would they not want to use the web hosting
service you are promoting?

Of course, you will need to know something about the product or service you are
selling considering your going to have to do a little bit of writing on the subject.

So how do you choose a good affiliate program from a bad one. If you’re at all
familiar with affiliate programs, you' ve probably heard about some of the scams
affiliate program owners have pulled like not paying commissions or stealing
traffic, but don't despair, there are some really great affiliate programs out there.

Here are a few things to look out for:

1. They pay you more then $10 monthly.

This is pretty critical. If you start promoting affiliate programs that pay you any
less, you’re going to have a hard time breaking even on advertising costs, unless
your advertising is free.

Let me explain. The purpose of advertising your first affiliate program and free
course is to break even on the first month. For instance, let' s say you spend $100
on advertising, but for that $100 you get 10 new sign ups for your affiliate
program at $10 each so that' s $100 a month. On top of that, you get 100 new
subscribers to your mailing list that you can contact anytime with more offers.

If you can break even on the advertising for the first month, you are doing very
well.

Your goal with this strategy is to get 10,000 people in your mailing list for your
free course, plus 500 paying monthly customers by the end of 12 months.

Now, if those 500 customers are paying $10 for a product or service, that comes
to $5000 a month! And that money is earned on total autopilot.

2. The affiliate program owner answers their emails quickly

If you email them and ask them questions about their affiliate program and you
don' t hear back from them in weeks or even not at all, this is a sure sign they
don' t take their affiliate program seriously and the support you will get will
probably be just as bad.

People forget that affiliates are the lifeblood of any residual income affiliate
program. If they answer their emails quickly and to the point, and they meet
every criteria set here, then join with confidence.

105
3. Their product meets up to your standards

I never promote a product or service that I wouldn’t purchase myself.

If you can't recommend the product, then it will be extremely hard to write
positive things about it. And considering you’re going to have to write a little bit
about it, you will need to be pumped up and excited by the prospect of telling
people about this company.

4. They don'
t have any negative feelings in the community

Amazon.com is a big example here. They have been taking affiliates for granted
for a long time. Not only that, Amazon.com hasn'
t had the best reputation for
customer service either.

You will be fighting an up hill battle promoting products or services that have
gotten a bad wrap.

But how do you know if they'

ve gotten a bad wrap lately? Use message boards!

Ask as many questions as you can and one good forum for that is at
http://www.associateprograms.com. Also places like http://www.epinions.com is
great. Another place would be http://www.bizrate.com.

If you can'
t find anything bad here, you might have found a winner.

10.6 Introduction to Creating Infoproducts for Your Niche

Now, I don' t have anything against promoting affiliate programs, but if
that is all you are doing, then you are leaving money on the table.

You see, one of the biggest and best reasons to create your own product is
to start YOUR OWN affiliate program.

Think about the affiliate program that you are promoting now. Putting in all
of your valuable time, energy, and advertising dollars to work by promoting
somebody else’s program.

Now imagine if you had 100 people just like you promoting your product in
that fashion.

Now, at this moment you may be thinking that creating an information product is
not for you. You may have very little knowledge of marketing on the internet.

But, no matter who you are or what experience you have (if any), you can create
a profitable niche product or have somebody else create it and sell it on the web.

The other reason to have your own product is the backend. For each product
that your affiliates sell for you, you gain another targeted customer that can
buy your future products where you don' t have to pay any affiliates.

That is why you see some affiliate programs paying 60-75%. They aren' t even
that interested in making money off of the first sale, they want the money
that will come in from the second, third, and fourth sale. So the affiliate
program owner will pay you 60-75% to basically bring customers into his
sales funnel.

It is a simple concept, but I am amazed by how many people aren'

t doing it.

In this book, I am mostly referring to digital niche products. I want

you to create a digital "how to" product to sell on the net. I have sold
both digital and hard goods, and digital has so many advantages, and hardly
any disadvantages.

What I mean by “digital niche product” is one that can be downloaded from the
Internet. Hard goods are those that you have to mail out for each order.
Here is why digital is so attractive:

Complete automation. You can find services to completely automate order

processing (combined with a real time credit card gateway), product fulfillment,
and backend sales process.

You only have to pay once to get this type of deal set up, whereas to have a
hard copy product fully automated, you would have to pay a certain amount
each time to get a company to ship your products for you.

Digital sells better. As long as you provide instant access to your

product, meaning they can download it - or get access to it the minute after
they order, you will make more sales. People can' t resist instant
gratification.

Less hassle. You don' t have to worry about packaging, shipping, printing
cost, post office hassles, etc.. You create the product once, then make as
many copies of it as you want to sell on the net.

The disadvantage for going with digital is that you do lose some perceived
value. Although I think that the value goes with quality of the product, most
people do not look at it that way.

They would rather have both digital and a hard copy version. I do not
believe that you lose too much with going all digital.

107
I also believe a "how to" course that specifically shows a person how to do
something in a specific niche market is the most profitable product to sell on the
net. It has advantages that 90% of other products do not have.

I have laid out this money-making formula that you can follow to create
your own product and get it selling quickly. The steps are all very simple,
just do them one at a time in order and you will do just fine.

Before you take any action on any of the techniques in this course, please
read the whole thing.

10.6.1 Choose a Niche Market

Choosing a niche market seems to be the first thing people do not put much
thought into, but should seriously consider when creating a product.

People do either two things, they choose the market that is selling well, or
seems to make a lot of money. Or, they choose a market where they have a lot
of expertise.

There are plenty of problems with both ways if not done correctly.

Let'
s take the first example as it seems to be the most common. When you
choose a market that looks like it does well, or where you have heard it is
easy to make money in, you are going to be hard pressed to be a new comer
and have any sort of control over it.

If it is a hot market and a lot of money is exchanging hands in that hot

market, there is most likely going to be some pretty large and furious
competition in that market. The kind of people that can knock out your
income almost completely within weeks.

They have larger budgets, more staff, and can accomplish much more in a much
shorter time period than you can.

It seems the most popular market that people are getting into that they
probably shouldn' t just jump into is internet marketing. People come on the
net, join some business opportunities, buy some marketing course, and then
think that another marketing course is the thing to create.

Internet marketing is more of a market that buys from you because you have a
proven system, not a theoretical course. In other markets, you do not have
to actually be good on the subject. Just as long as you are knowledgeable, you
can make a ton of money.

With internet marketing, people want to buy from people who have made a ton
of money from internet marketing, not people who have read all of the

108
marketing courses, and then created their own. Or at least this is my
experience.

This is also an extremely competitive market. There are niche markets (like those
presented in this book) that you can choose that have all of the nuts and bolts
and have not even been tapped yet. I would suggest going into a different market
and learn really how to get stuff selling, and then maybe you might want to get
into internet marketing.

The second way people choose a market will either make them or break them.
They choose a market based on something that they already know. Now, this
can be excellent, or it can be your worst nightmare.

I am all for creating a product based on something you already know. And
after you read this book, you will most likely end up creating your
product like this. BUT, to have it successful from day 1, you have to follow
a few rules first.

People will create a product on something they know, and in their eyes, it
looks like a real winner. Then they start buying advertising, spending all
this money to try and sell a product that does not have a market, nor did it
ever have a market.

Or, the market exist, but has no money, or maybe no interest in trying to
solve the problem. So before just jumping in any niche market, you have to
consider ALL of the elements.

Here is a few that you need to look at:

• The amount of competition you will have, and how big the competitors are.
• Whether there is a market for your product.
• The niche market has to have money for your product. For instance, you
cannot sell a 4 year old a book on how to tie his shoes.
• Is the market growing, or declining in business?

Once you have chosen a niche market, you have to find out what people want
before you spend your time on creating something. It would be completely foolish
of you to spend a week/month creating a product, a web site, sales letter,
bonuses, etc.. and then find out that there is no market on this earth for that
product.

If you are thinking of creating something that is already successful, then you still
need to read/do this step. In my opinion, I would not create something that is not
unique.

109
Just a little unique is better than none. Do not create something that is exactly
the same as something already successful.

You want to use the same idea as the successful product, but put your own
edge and uniqueness to it that is beneficial to the customer.

This way, you have something *better* than what is already out there. And
the way you find that out is by asking a few questions.

10.6.2 Survey Your Target Niche Market to Find Out What They Want
All you have to do is survey your target market with a few questions to see what
it is they are willing to buy. What problem do they have that you can solve, etc..

It is very simple and will give you astounding results. Survey as many people as
you can to see which product the majority of your market wants. This will save
you hours or even days of time creating products that don' t sell.

And of course, when you do find what people want and give it to them at a
reasonable price, you have just unleashed a mad stream of cash, charging into
your pockets.

If you do not find out what people want, or if you simply create a product on a
hunch, then you could end up with a product that will never sell.

Not only will you have wasted your time creating the product, but you will have
also waste money on advertising, trying to get the product to sell. So this is a
pretty important step.

A few tips with creating your survey

1. You need to set up a web page where visitors will go to fill out your
survey.

2. Creating your survey is very simple. However, you should not ask 50
questions that some of your market may not know. If you do that, they simple
won' t fill it out, or they will fill it out falsely.

3. Do not have any of items pre-checked or selected. This will create false
results as people will just click the "submit" button quickly and not even
change the "already checked" results.

4. Make sure and have "None of the above" options for each question.
All of your products ideas might not be bought by anybody, and if you do
not have "none of the above" options, then you would never know and you
could still possibly end up creating something that nobody wants.

110
5. No fancy designs. Have your web page that hosts the survey form on it, simply
for hosting the survey. No need for fancy, flashy designs and links going to
several different places. Just have your survey and that is it.

6. Create a free report on the topic that you feel your target market is
most interested in. Do some quick research and write an essay, or summarize
a certain subject. This free report is going to be the reason why people are
filling out your survey in the first place. If you do not have anything to
give them for their participation, then many people probably won' t participate.

7. If you want to get traffic to your survey, one way is to find a newsletter that
offers solo mailings. Another idea is to contact your email list, if you have one.
You could also use Google AdWords.

After you have done the above, tally up the results and begin designing the
product you are going to create. Usually, you will see the results are
pretty one sided. The majority of people will have picked the same options,
which is what you want.

If the results show that everything is pretty equal, then pick the option
that you are most comfortable with creating. If the majority of the results
show "None of the above" answers, then create different questions and survey
them again.

10.6.3 Create Your Infoproduct

Infoproducts include e-books, e-courses, special reports, or whatever else that
you will write and package into a product.

If you’re not much of a writer, a step-by-step e-course that you load into an
autoresponder may be your best bet starting out.

If you can show the customer that you can solve their problem in an easy
step-by-step, paint-by-number routine, then you will have a very profitable
product.

Having an online course is good approach for a couple of reasons:

1. If you have the right software, you can protect your course from people
redistributing it. ClikGate Pro which only allows people to access this course from
so many IP addresses is a useful tool. If they access it from too many IP
addresses, it deletes their username and password.

This isn't something to get paranoid over. It doesn' t happen that often, believe it
or not, there are a lot of good people in this world who would never do that.

111
2. You can update an e-course easily. With an e-book, you would have to update
the page, create the new e-book, then send it to all of your customers and hope
they re-download it again.

With an online course, you just update it as you would a regular web site. This
will allow you to promote new backend products immediately, add new chapters
easily, offer instant news about the product, etc..

Creating a digital info product will give you the power of instant gratification (very
powerful selling point) and the convenience of automation.

I think "how to" e-courses are one of the easiest products that you can create.
Show people how to solve XYZ problem and you will be off to a good start.

10.6.4 Pick Your Topic

You can write an infoproduct on anything. Just ask yourself what you are
good at. Here are a few examples:

• Can you really save money by using free coupons (or whatever)?
• Can you cook really well, or have a unique cooking style?
• Did you accomplish something great(like loose a lot of weight fast, or
• Do something positive that helped your life. Quit smoking maybe)?
• Maybe get out of debt really quickly?

Is there anything that you have had a problem with that you have found the
solution to? Would other people want to know about it?

What you have to do is take the idea that you come up with, and turn it into
as many product ideas as you possibly can. Re-arrange it into every
variation that you can think of. This isn'
t hard at all to do, just write
down your ideas, whatever they may be. Also, refer to your survey results.

You may at times come up with one that you think is stupid, WRITE IT DOWN
ANYWAYS, that may be the one that everybody else will pay good money for!

10.6.5 Your Writing Style

When writing an e-course (or e-book, report, etc..) you need to talk directly at
the person who is reading it, just like I am in this book. I am not saying
"everybody" or "you all" I am saying "YOU".

If you have ever read a book on how to write ad copy, use those techniques
when writing your info product. Be direct, use short sentences, use exciting
words, use sub-headlines, etc.. You want to keep your readers attention.

Don'
t ramble. Try to stay on the subject. There is nothing more that I hate
when I think I am about to read something about the headline of the article,

112
and it goes into another subject that is way off topic.

Use examples. Examples are good to show the reader different sides of the
subject. It also gives proof about what you are talking about. Tell stories
of situations that you know happened about the subject you are on. Stories
are not only good to help explain, but they are also good to motivate the
reader.

They promote proof that other people are doing it, and that it is not difficult. You
are not only writing a product to sell, but you also want your readers to take
action, this helps you to get testimonials of results.

10.6.6 Write Your Infoproduct

You aren' t going to be able to do this in one day, no matter how fast of a
typist you are. And if you do finish it in one day, then you will have left
out a lot of stuff that you have in your brain, but couldn't access it that
day. This is basically just how it works.

Your brain only remembers certain things at certain times. When you spread
out your writing over the course of a week or two then your brain will
access different parts of your memory, which will help you create a more
detailed version.
What you should do is write as much as you can in one day, then the next day
reread it and start writing more. When you reread it, it will trigger more ideas
which will make for a better explained course.

One way to create your course is to write the shell (or outline) all at once, then go
back and add more detail to it. You can come out with products very quickly
doing this.

Write down all of the chapters to your course, then go through and write the
first 3 or 4 paragraphs to each chapter. Then when you finish the shell, go back
and add more detail to each chapter.

See where I am going?

Now, one thing that may happen is that you will have all sorts of ideas to write
your product. But once you sit down to actually do it, your mind may go blank.

This happens from time to time. But keep going and one day you’ll wake up and
the course will be done. Just the sense of accomplishment will spur you on to
create more information products!

11.0 A Few Parting Pearls of Wisdom
Since I’ve been on the Internet, I’ve made my share of mistakes and learned
plenty of lessons. In fact, it’s those mistakes that have helped me create a
thriving online business.

In all likelihood, you’re going to have your own missteps on your journey to
success.

But there are a few words of wisdom that have stuck with me as I’ve built, and
continue to expand, my Internet business. I want to share them with you with the
hope that you’ll use them to prosper and achieve your dreams.

11.1 Keys to Online Success

1) Find the right product or service

You must have some sort of product or service online that a fair amount of
people would be interested in to make any money. The product could even be an
affiliate program you are promoting.

However, don’t make the mistake and jump on the first idea that hits you without
having very clear plan on how you are going to make money and an
understanding of what you’re going to be selling and to whom. Surveying your
niche market is the best way to narrow down a great product or service.

2) Make lead generation a priority

Being able to contact prospects and customers anytime you want without
spending a fortune in the process is one of the great things about marketing on
the Internet.

Once you have those leads, you can contact them again and again for practically
nothing. It doesn'
t even need to take up your own time, you can use
autoresponders to do the work for you.

Having an email list full of people who are dying to know about your product or
service is like having money in the bank.

3) Use testing and tracking to improve your sales conversion rate

This is one of those things you tweak along the way. If your website or email'
s
are only converting at 1% then that’s ok, it'
s something you can improve on.

For instance, if you get 100 customers to your website and you have a 1%
conversion rate, you will only make 1 sale. If you have a conversion rate of 2%
you double the amount of sales you get and the amount of money you make
without having to get any more traffic or even spending any more money.

114
Basically, try and get the most out of what you have. It really is the simple things
that count and if you do them right, everything else falls into place.

4) Stay organized
This is something many people struggle with. They fail to realize that an Internet
business is just like any other business and needs to be run the same way.

There is bookkeeping work, emails, finances, expenses, you name it, it's there.
While this might be mundane, it needs to be done. If you don'
t want to do it, hire
someone to do it for you.

5) Invest in your business education.

I spend thousands every year on books, tapes, seminars, you name it. You need
to be able to keep up with what is going on.

Just like a doctor has to read medical journals, you need to keep up to date with
the latest marketing techniques and news that will affect you in some way.

No one knows all there is to know about running a business online, that' s why
testing and tracking are so important. As much as reading is important, just doing
something will make all the difference to your business.

6) Don’t be afraid to try something new.

It doesn’t matter whether you want to start a part-time business for a little extra
cash or a full-time business that will allow you to quit an unfulfilling job. The niche
blueprints can help you achieve either goal.

You don’t have to be a formally trained expert on a niche that has caught your
eye either. All you need is a healthy curiosity and a willingness to try something
new. This is where your success begins.

From there, all you need to do is learn….That’s right!

Go to the library. Or, pay a visit to your favorite bookstore.

Learn enough about the topic to be willing to share your thoughts and opinions.

Heck, that doesn’t take much. And before you know it, you’ll be way ahead of the
typical visitor to your Web site. In short, you’ll be perceived as an expert.

You’ll also be having fun doing exactly what you want to do.

More times than not, learning something new has a way of opening doors and
helping us realize our full potential.

115
7) Don’t over analyze.
I can appreciate that before you start any business venture you’ll want to perform
due diligence and prepare a business plan. In fact, I highly recommend that you
do so.

However, I would encourage you not to bury your head for months in all kinds of
analyses and “what if” scenarios – trying to decide if a particular niche business
is “right” for you.

The more analyses you perform, the more time and profits you’re losing.
Remember…I’ve done most of the heavy lifting for you.

All you need to do is select the niche that your intuition is guiding you to. In other
words, just go with your “gut” feeling.

8) Create a professional looking Web site.

Think of your Web site as a calling card that your visitors will view and form an
impression about who you are and the quality of your business.

Do you want them to think that you’re a cheapskate? That you’re unprofessional?
That your business is a fly-by-night operation?

Of course not!

Well, many of them will if you throw up one of those freebie Web sites. Or, load
your site with non-stop music, slow-loading flash graphics, or whirling
doohickeys, doodads, and thingamajigs.

Do fall into the trap of thinking that it’s the slick graphics that get the sale.

A few tasteful, well placed graphics are helpful, but it’s your words that will bring
you the wealth and success you desire.

9) Dare to be different.
The Internet is filled with mountains of cookie-cutter Web sites that offer
absolutely nothing.

So, would you do me a favor? Whichever blueprint you use to start your niche
business, really give some thought to how you’re going to make it unique.

Be one of the shining beacons in the sea of mediocrity. Trust me, your visitors
and customers will appreciate your fresh new approach, and they’ll reward you
for it.
It’s not difficult to make your business unique. Just share your honest, heartfelt
ideas and opinions. Put a face on your Web business.

116
10) When in doubt, give a shout.
In order to expand your business, you will undoubtedly have to introduce new
goods or services.

I would advise you not to just slap products on your Web site and hope for the
best. This could turn into a very expensive and frustrating way for you to run your
business and maximize profits.

Instead, find a way to communicate with the very people to whom you wish to sell
the items.

That’s right, ask them what it is they want.

Formal surveys are best, but at a minimum open the lines of communication
through your newsletter or discussions groups, chat rooms, email, and the good
old fashioned telephone.

On a couple of occasions I’ve been very surprised at how my wonderful ideas

were changed and improved based on my potential customers’ feedback.

Wishing you much success,

Michael Holland
