ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

Section I [28 marks]

Q1. A mild steel bar 300mm long is shown in Fig. Q1. A tensile axial load of 100 kN is
applied to the bar.

The Modulus of Elasticity, E= 200 GN/m2 and the Yield Stress σy = 250 MN/m2.

(a) Show that the stresses induced are 40 MN/m2 and 33.33 MN/m2
respectively. (4 marks)

(b) Find the total extension of the bar. (5 marks)

(c) Determine the factor of safety. (2 marks)

A hole is needed to be drilled through the axis of section 2 to ensure uniform stresses
across the steel bar.

(d) Find the diameter of the hole required. (3 marks)

Fig Q1.

Solution :

a) Show that 1 = 40 MN/m2 ; 2 = 33.33 MN/m2

b) x = x1 + x2 = 0.03 + 0.025 = 0.055 mm
c) FOS = y / 1 = 6.25
d) Dia of hole in Section 2 = 25.23 mm (Hint: New A2 = A1 = 100 x 25 mm2 )

Q2 (a) For the area shown in Fig Q2(a), show that the position of the centroid, 𝑋̅ = 40 𝑚𝑚
and 𝑌̅ = 58.26 𝑚𝑚. Hence, determine the second moment of area about the horizontal
centroidal axis of the area. (10 marks)

Fig Q2(a).

(b) Two identical pieces of the above area in Fig Q2(a) are combined into one as shown in
Fig Q2(b). Determine the second moment of area about its horizontal centroidal axis of
the area shown. (4 marks)

ME2101/ME0102
Solution :

a) From Fig Q2(a)

𝑋̅ = 40 𝑚𝑚 (By symmetry)
𝐴 𝑦 −𝐴 𝑦 −𝐴 𝑦
𝑌̅ = 1 1 2 2 3 3 = 58.26 𝑚𝑚
𝐴1 −𝐴2 −𝐴3
𝐼𝐺𝐺 = 𝐼𝐺𝐺1 − 𝐼𝐺𝐺2 − 𝐼𝐺𝐺3 = 1.01 x 107 mm4

b) From Fig Q2(b)

IGG1 = Igg1 + A1h12 = 3.775 x 107 mm4

Hence; IGG = 2 x IGG1 = 7.55 x 107 mm4

Use the grid paper provided for this question.

Use the following scale:

Free Body Diagram 2 divisions : 1.0 m

Shear Force Diagram 2 divisions : 10.0 kN
Bending Moment Diagram 2 divisions : 10.0 kNm

(a) Draw the free body diagram of the beam and show that the reactions at B and D are
44.5 k N and 65.5 kN respectively. (6 marks)

(b) Draw the shear force diagram and state the maximum shear force value and its
position. (4 marks)

(c) Find the bending moments at salient points and draw the bending moment diagram.
