TemPower 2
The innovative design of the TemPower
TemPower 2 double break contacts
system has eliminated any need for
an intermediate flexible conductor
in the moving contacts assembly.
The result is a more compact main
contact design allowing the
TemPower 2 ACB to have the worlds

benefits in two ways especially, a
more space saving ACB, plus a
lower temperature rise as result of
fewer moving parts associated with
the double break contacts assembly.
The TemPower 2 ACB has more than
20 design patents registered
covering it’s unique main contacts
design. 345 mm

458 mm

The height and depth dimensions are identical in all sizes up to 3200 A, with only the width varying
according to the amp rating. There are two common width or frame sizes from 800-2000 A and from
2500-3200 A. The panel cut out size is the same for all sizes of the TemPower 2 ACB, thus simplifying
fitting a variety of breaker sizes into a switchboard. The 4000A TemPower 2 ACB has an increased
width & depth, while the height is common with other sizes.
Maximum power from minimum volume was central to the design specification. With a depth of
345 mm, the TemPower 2 is one of the smallest ACBs in the world in terms of overall dimensions and
one of the smallest when it comes to depth. TemPower 2 ACBs are available with draw-out carriages,
with either front or rear terminal connections. A front connected ACB is especially suitable where a
switchboard has less depth available.

1 Features
High performance and reliability

Very fast interruption by

the “DoubleBreak” system
The unique“DoubleBreak” main contacts
system ensures very fast interruption of short
circuit currents with a maximum clearing time
of 30 msec. The double contacts also share
the arc energy, which substantially reduces
main contact wear. “DoubleBreak” main
contacts allow reverse power connection.

Simplified and stronger

main circuit contact
assembly
There are no clamp screws or flexible leads
in the main circuit contact units. This
substantially enhances the durability of the
main circuit contact units and improves the
ACB’s reliability during its ON-OFF
operations.

AGR2 overcurrent relay closing/tripping circuitry - no

mechanical contacts
When advanced TemPower 2 AGR21 or 22 OCRs are used, the internal closing/tripping
operation circuits employ electronic semiconductors for all switching. This ensures both
longer life and increased reliability for the OCRs internal circuits.

Fully rated Neutral (4th) pole

Devices such as UPS power backup systems and variable speed motor controllers, which
utilise inverters, generate a significant amount of line harmonics. Because these types of
devices have become so common in recent years, the amount of harmonics generated in
the average distribution network has increased significantly. One result of this is higher
neutral currents. To meet this requirement the new TemPower 2 ACB has a 100 % fully rated
neutral pole is standard.

New Selectivity capabilities L Long time delay

S Short time delay

Terasaki are so concerned about

selectivity that all AGR overcurrent
relays have ‘LSI’ characteristics as
standard.
This provides an adjustable time
delay on overload (L) and also the I2t
ramp characteristic (S). As shown
(see diagram) these are essential to
provide selectivity when grading
with other protective devices such as
downstream fuses and upstream
relays. The standard ‘LSI’ curve
provides more than five million
combinations of unique time current
characteristics.
Unlike the previous TemPower “AT” and rated latching current. This time and short time functions, full

4 Specifications
Manual ACB operation, motorised ACB operation

Manual charging operation

For this type of ACB using a spring charging handle charges the closing springs. ON/OFF operation of the
ACB is performed by means of ON/OFF buttons on the ACB.
■ Charging the closing springs

Pumping the spring charging handle by hand charges the closing springs.

■ ACB Closing

Pressing the ON button on the ACB closes the ACB.

■ ACB Opening

Pressing the OFF button on the ACB opens the ACB. The ACB cannot be closed while the OFF button
continues to be pressed.

Motor charging operation

For this type of ACB, the closing springs are charged by means of an internally mounted motor. ON/OFF
operation of the ACB can be performed remotely. A manual charging mechanism is also fitted to facilitate
inspection or maintenance work.
■ Charging the closing springs

A motor is used to charge the closing springs. When the closing springs are released to close the ACB, they
are automatically recharged by the motor for the next closing operation.
■ ACB Closing

Turning on a “remote” ON switch enables the ACB to be remotely closed.

• Anti-pumping mechanism
Even if the ON switch is kept on, the ACB closing operation is performed only once. To close the ACB again,
turn off the ON switch to allow the motor to charge the springs, then activate the ON switch again.

• If ON and OFF signals are simultaneously given to the ACB, the ON signal is ignored.
■ ACB Opening

(1) With an AGR-11 OCR or without OCR (Non Auto ACB).

For opening the ACB remotely, specify a shunt trip device or an undervoltage trip.

(2) With an AGR-21 or AGR-22 OCR.

By operating an external OFF switch, a tripping coil in the ACB called “TC” is activated, thereby opening
the ACB. The “TC” tripping coil is fitted as standard.

General functions
The TemPower 2 over-current relay provides flexible protection functions within 3 different relay types:
AGR-L L = General / Industrial & transformer protection
AGR-R R = Standard Inverse, Very Inverse, & Extremely Inverse curve
AGR-S S = Generator / Marine protection type
In terms of features other than characteristic curves, AGR OCRs can be split into 3 general categories:
Standard type: AGR-11 (L, R or S curve)
Advanced type: AGR-21 (L, R or S curve)
Advanced LCD display type: AGR-22 (L, R or S curve)
AGR OCRs contain many overlapping features, meaning an OCR can be chosen for a particular application.

HOT or COLD start mode is user-selectable. In ramp mode will be changed to the definite time

start mode, the OCR operates faster than when in the
COLD start setting. This OCR when switched to start
in HOT mode provides extra protection, because it
takes into account that the load may be already
heated and the greater level of existing heat stress in
the system.

➂ Adjustable instantaneous trip function INST/MCR

There are two modes of instantaneous tripping. They
are the INST and the MCR setting. Either function can
be selected by operating a switch on the OCR.
The INST (instantaneous) trip function trips the ACB
when a short circuit current exceeds its pickup current
setting, irrespective of whether the ACB is closing or
has already closed. Alternatively, the Making Current
Release (MCR) trips the ACB when only if the short
circuit current exceeds the pickup current setting
during the closing operation. After the ACB is closed
the MCR is inoperative.
Note:
The MCR requires separate control power. Should this
fail, the MCR will be inoperative. Power must either be
returned to the MCR or the OCR must be switched to
the INST trip position to obtain any instantaneous trip
function.

AGR-11, 21 and 22 OCR Control power: loss or absence

The table below shows at a glance, how the OCR will function if control power going to any OCR or OCR function is
not connected or lost. The main power current transformers are still connected and functioning though, so the most
basic OCR function such as its tripping ability will still function.

If the control power is not supplied or is lost, each function operates as follows:
LT, ST, INST, RPT, UVT Operates normally
GF Operates normally for current above 800 A
When the CT rated primary current [ICT] is less than
800 A and the GF pick-up current is set to 10 %, the
GF becomes inoperative
MCR MCR will be inoperative, setting changes to INST

APR-10.4-TS remote monitoring and

control touchscreen
(Available late 2006)
In partnership with Terasaki, NHP introduces the APR-10.4-
TS remote monitoring and control touchscreen.
Using the popular 10.4” Bernecker + Rainer industrial touch
screen, NHP has engineered a generic approach for
monitoring and controlling MODBUS communications
ready Terasaki AR ACBs.

Indication, control and monitoring features

• A maximum of 12 ACBs can be networked via a 2 wire serial communications link
• ACBs networked to the APR-10.4-TS can be individually selected, indicating:

• Open/Close and trip status using written

indication and colour coded indication
• Line voltages (V12, V23, V31)
• Active power (kW)
• Reactive power (kVAr)
• Power factor (PF)
• Power consumption (kWh)
• Phase currents (l1, l2, l3, IN)
• Ground fault current (IG)
• Frequency (Hz)
• Nature of trip (LT, ST, INST, GF)

User design
• Users design their ACB switchboard layout in a single line diagram
• Each ACB and switchboard location can be labeled via the touch screen keyboard input interface

3 Pole ACBs
When using a 3-pole ACB with ground fault protection function to protect a 3-phase, 4-wire system against
ground fault, an external current transformer (CT) must be installed for the neutral line. NHP can provide this
neutral line CT as an option. Refer below for types and dimensions.
4 Pole ACBs
4-pole ACBs will have a similar measuring CT installed in place of the neutral line CT in an ACB when the
ground fault protection option is fitted. Therefore an external CT is not required.

reliable interlock system. Using the same keys also
allows interlocking between an ACB and other
devices (such as a switchboard door).

4 Specifications
Interlocking - Cable type, Rod type
Mechanical interlock

TemPower 2 mechanical interlocks employ either cable or rod systems to provide positive interlocking
between two or three ACBs. To further enhance the system, electrical interlocking can be used.
Mechanical interlock types
■ 2 way cable interlock for 2 ACBs
■ 3 way cable interlock for 3 ACBs
■ 2 way vertical side mounting rod interlock for 2 ACBs
■ 3 way vertical, available as either a rod or cable type for 3 ACBs

1 CABLE Interlocking – horizontal, vertical or diagonal

Cable interlocking is the most flexible means of interlocking ACBs in terms of combinations and mounting
flexibility. Cable Interlocking is possible between any 3 or 4 pole frame size or combination of different frame
sizes within the TemPower 2 range. This is achieved through the use of cable as the form of interlock. ACBs
can be mounted diagonally, horizontally or vertically.
Cable interlocking can be used to obtain a variety of switching combinations between 2 or 3 ACBs.
• The simplest is between two ACBs using 2 cables. Either ACB "X" or "Y" can be closed. (Type C)
• In the case of 3 ACBs, called "X", "Y" and "Z", by using 4 cables, interlocking can be obtained
between X and Y, Y and Z, but not X and Z. (Type A)
• By using 6 cables, interlocking can be obtained
between "X", "Y" or "Z" in any combination. (Type B)
Distance between ACBs & Cable length
Cable lengths, or the distance the ACBs are apart can be
specified by customer order. Special pre-specified
lengths can range from 1 m up to 7 m. Otherwise NHP will supply
a “kit” consisting of two 3 meter cable lengths that can be cut to
the required length by the user. Multiple cable quantities can be
ordered for A & B interlocking.
Bend radius
The bend radius it the minimum diameter bend allowed that
maintains functionality. If the bend is less than 150 mm, the cable can jam against the outer protective sleeve.
The cable consists of a solid stainless steel wire inside a protective sleeve.

2 Vertical ROD interlocking

Rod interlocking is possible between any 3 or 4 pole frame size or combination of
different frame sizes within the TemPower 2 range. Rod interlocking is for mounting
ACBs vertically above one another only.
The minimum pitch can be 550 mm, the maximum 1200 mm. For any two ACBs
that require an exact pitch distance, please specify when ordering.

Rod interlocking can be used to obtain interlocking between 2 or 3 ACBs.

• The simplest is between two ACBs. Either ACB "A" or "B" can be closed.
• In the case of 3 ACBs, called "A", "B" and "C", interlocking can be
obtained between A and B, C and B, but not A and C. Contact NHP for
additional details.

Busbar connection supports
Busbar connection supports

The busbars to the ACB should be firmly supported near the ACB terminal. Fault current flow through the
busbars develops a large electromatic force between the busbars, and the support must be strong enough
to withstand such forces. The ACB terminals should not be relied upon as a busbar support.

The maximum distance of the connection point of ACB to the first busbar support.

Derating table - when the temperature inside a switchboard is unknown

In such an installation, reduction of the rated current of the ACB (derating) is necessary since ventilation is
usually poor and because of the existence of other heat generating devices such as busbars.
The degree to which ACB derating is necessary depends upon the size and arrangement of busbars and ACB
connections, the size of the switchboard compartment where the ACB is mounted, the switchboard enclosure
size, the degree of the enclosure ventilation, as well as other environmental factors.
The following tables can be used as a general guide to rating ACBs in an enclosure. It is possible however that
varying conditions or the addition of other heat producing devices or even obstructions within the enclosure
may require additional derating or an increased level at ventilation.
As a guide for ACB derating, the rated current data is shown here for typical switchboard compartments, and
the data is based on the temperature rise limits specified below.
Standard Ambient temperature Contacts Terminals
IEC 40 ºC 90 ºC 70 ºC
The following tables indicate the rated currents for ACBs when the enclosure internal temperature is unknown,
but the external temperature is known. This data is based on the results of temperature tests carried out by
installing AR ACBs into an enclosure 2300H x 700W x 1000D.
The following is a typical example:
■ ACB type: AR216S (1600 A) with horizontal terminals
■ ACB position: Top, when 3 ACBs are installed vertically
■ Ventilation area: 2400 cm2 for both the ACB and busbar zone (cut-out or vent size)
■ Zone ventilation: Referring to the diagrams below, in this case the ventilation can be front or rear
■ Outside temperature: 50 ºC Front and rear ventilation

ACB zone Busbar zone

Result: The derating required for the AR ACB is 50 A, which reduces Ventilation Ventilation
the breaker to a 1500 A capability. By way of example, this derating is Vents Vents
substantially less than that which would have been required for the
equivalent previous Terasaki series “AT” ACB (1330 A)

8 Ordering Data

About TemPower 2 AR ACB ordering:

TemPower 2 ACBs are locally assembled by NHP and can be supplied with many variations and options to
suit specific end user applications. The list below represents typical specifications to be considered at the
time of ordering:

1. ACB type and current rating

2. Number of poles

3. Main circuit and control circuit voltage and frequency

4. Operating temperatures

5. Type of mounting. For example: Draw-out type ACB

6. Terminal arrangements. For example rear connect vertical or horizontal main terminals. Front connect
terminals are also an option.

7. Type of charging. Manual lever (standard) or motor operated. If a motor is chosen then the operating
voltage has to be specified.

8. The OCR (Over-current relay or "release"). The OCR type needs to be chosen depending on the
requirements of the installation. NHP / Terasaki have as standard "LSI" OCRs in all ACBs. Basic AGR-
11L OCRs are available with or without ground fault.
For feature details covering basic OCRs and more advanced OCRs with features such as
communications ability, LCD displays plus other options, please refer to page 34-42.
9. Electrical tripping devices: Other options such as Shunt trips, Under voltage releases, or capacitor
trips need to be considered.

10. Other accessories, some of which are:

■ ON-OFF cycle counter ■ IP 55 cover
■ Auxiliary switch type ■ OFF padlock
■ Key lock devices – standard or L&F etc. ■ Door flange
■ Mechanical interlocks

11. Contact your NHP sales office for any other special requirements such as service or repair, retrofitting,
